Uni-Marts, Inc. (814-234-6000) recently reported that net earnings for the first six months of its fiscal year increased 13% to $1.9 million from $1.68 million last year.  Revenues fell to $153.1 million from $160.9 million last year.  The decline was attributed to the company's sale of its dairy operations and the closing of several stores.

 

Timber Lodge Steakhouse, Inc. (612-929-9353) recently sold its only Q. Cumbers Restaurant in Edina, MN.

 

Mothers Work, Inc. (215-625-9259) recently reported its net sales for the third fiscal quarter increased to $29.5 million, up 84.4% from $16 million for the same period last year.  The company also reported a two percent increase in comparable store sales for the quarter.

 

Eddie Bauer (708-769-2596) recently entered into a joint venture with Otto Versand Group to operate a mail order business and open stores in Europe.

 

Hills Stores Company (617-821-1000) recently announced that the Dickstein Partners, Inc. slate of officers was elected to the Board of Directors of the company.  After the election, Mark Dickstein, president of Dickstein Partners, placed Hills up for sale.  The company currently operates 156 stores in 11 Midwestern and Mid-Atlantic states.

 

Uno Restaurant Corporation (617-323-9200) announced that net income for its third fiscal quarter increased 24% to $1.852 million, compared to $1.49 million for the same period last year.  The company also reported that its third quarter revenues increased 29% to $41.5 million from $32.3 million.  Additionally, the company reported that comparable store sales increased 1.4%.  The company currently operates 75 Pizzeria Uno restaurants and franchises another 59 units.  The company also operates three Bay Street seafood restaurants and one Mexican restaurant.

 

DIY Home Warehouse, Inc. (216-328-5100) announced that earnings for its second quarter increased 28% to $2.135 million from $1.664 million for the same period last year.  Net sales for the quarter increased 38% to $58.411 million from $42.308 million last year, but comparable store sales fell three percent.  During the quarter, the company opened three stores and currently operates 15 locations in OH.  A 16th store is expected to open during the fourth quarter.

 

Borders, Group Inc. (313-995-9702) plans to acquire all of Kmart's 5.39 million shares of common stock for $13.50 per share.

 

Aileen, Inc. (212-398-9770), which has been operating under Chapter 11, plans to sell 46 of its 66 stores, their leases, store assets and Aileen name to Names for Dames, Inc.  The sale requires the bankruptcy court's approval.  Names for Dames, which currently operates 67 Adolfo II stores, plans to operate the Aileen stores under their present name.  The remaining 20 Aileen stores will be closed by Aileen, Inc.

 

Weis Markets (717-286-4571) announced that its second quarter sales increased 10.6% to $407.578 million compared to $368.467 million during the same period last year.  The company also reported that its second quarter net earnings increased 3.2% to $18.379 million, up from $17.808 million last year.  The company currently operates 150 supermarkets in PA, MD, NJ, NY, VA and WV.

 

Office Depot (407-265-4258) announced that its second quarter sales increased 30% to $1.2 billion, up from $924.676 million during the same period last year.  Net earnings for the second quarter increased 32% to $27.418 million, up from $20.809 million last year and the company's operating profit jumped 35% to $52.165 million from $38.745 million.  Comparable store sales for the quarter increased 18%.  During the second quarter, the company opened 17 stores and closed one, ending the quarter with 448 stores throughout North America.  The company also opened its first Images store and is planning to open several more in Southern FL; the company plans to open a furniture store in TX and is preparing to offer a new service called Uptime Services, which offers technology support services to its customers.

 

The Kroger Co. (513-762-4000) announced that its second quarter total sales increased 4.8% to $5.65 billion and that its supermarket sales increased 5.2%.  The company also announced that its net earnings, after the extraordinary charge from the early retirement of debt, were $77 million, up from $67.3 million last year.
