Retailers Keeping Up with The Times

 

Blockbuster Entertainment Group (305-832-3000) recently gave permission to Trient Partners, Inc., franchisee of 42 Blockbuster Video stores in OR and WA, to design two prototype stores in Issaquah and Mill Creek, WA.  Customers enter the store through one set of double doors and are greeted by the big-screen televisions in the preview theater and leads them to the Director's Circle, an area where information on movies can be found.  Using an illuminated star-like ceiling and a wooden floor, the new releases are located around the perimeter of the store.  Colorful old movie posters decorate the walls as well.  In addition to the movies, the store includes a small area for video game playing and an area for children to preview videos.  Three more stores patterned after these two are planned for Puyallup, Monroe and West Seattle, and the Blockbuster Entertainment Group plans to utilize several ideas from these stores as they develop a new prototype store.  In more news from Blockbuster, the company announced that it has launched a World Wide Web site on the Internet.  The site is a graphical version of Blockbuster Video's News & Previews monthly newsletter which is available at Blockbuster stores.  Included on the WWW will be video previews and interviews and profiles of movie stars.  The address is http://www.pwr.com/Blockbuster/.

Hallmark Cards (816-274-5883) and Micrographics recently introduced Hallmark Connections Card Studio on CD-ROM.  The software will allow consumers to design their own greeting cards at home using more than 1,000 pre-designed styles.  Users will also be able to custom-make their own cards, invitations, announcements and certificates.  The software retails for $49.99.

 

General Nutrition Corporation (412-288-4621) recently began offering a co-branded MasterCard.  The credit card gives users rebate certificates good toward any purchase at General Nutrition Center stores.

 

Builders Square (210-732-1522) recently launched a gift registry program at its stores.  Customers can register their "wish list" of items for any occasion, including weddings, birthdays, anniversaries and other holidays.  Customers can register at the Customer Service Desk in Builders Square stores where they will be given a packet of information.  Customers then walk through the store and write down the SKU numbers of the items they want and take the completed form back to the Customer Service Desk.  The information is then loaded into a computer linked to all 171 Builders Square stores nationwide.

Mergers & Acquisitions

 

First National Entertainment Corp. (800-498-8342) recently signed letters of intent to purchase Video Tyme and Seek First, Inc.  Video Tyme operates four stores in Ventura, CA and Seek First, Inc. operates two Video Plus stores in Riverside County, CA.

 

Ace Cash Express, Inc. (214-550-5000) recently signed a letter of intent to purchase Check Express which operates 26 stores in FL, IN and WA and franchises another 162 units in 26 states that trade as Check Express and Check-X-Change.  Ace operates more than 450 units in 15 states.  The proposed deal is subject to approval by Check Express stockholders.

 

Shoney's, Inc. (615-391-5201) and TPI Enterprises, Inc. (407-835-8888) recently signed a letter of intent to merge TPI with a subsidiary of Shoney's.  TPI, which is the largest franchisee of Shoney's, operates 188 Shoney's Restaurants and 69 Captain D's Seafood restaurants.  Overall, TPI operates 257 restaurants in 11 states while Shoney's operates and franchises 1,850 restaurants in 35 states and Canada.  As part of the merger, Shoney's will assume $95 million of TPI's net debt.  The deal, which needs approval from stockholders of both companies, is expected to close by the end of the year.

 

Montgomery Ward (312-467-2000) recently signed a letter of intent to purchase 7.222 million shares of Levitz Furniture, Inc. common stock for approximately $65 million.  The deal also calls  for Montgomery Ward to receive warrants to purchase an additional 13.6 million shares of Levitz stock.  If Montgomery Ward exercises all of the warrants they will own approximately 42% of Levitz's common stock.  The deal needs approval from Levitz's stockholders.  Montgomery Ward operates 380 specialty stores in 39 states and Levitz operates 134 furniture stores in 26 states.

 

Claire's Stores, Inc. (708-860-5400) recently acquired an option to purchase Bow Bangles Holdings Limited which operates 71 women's accessories stores in England, Scotland and Wales.  Under the agreement, Claire's has an option to purchase Bow Bangles for a price based on operating performance during the period February 1, 1996 to January 31, 2000.  Claire's may exercise its option at any time before July 1, 1997.  Claire's, which trades as Claire's Boutiques, Topkapi and Dara Michelle, operates 1,260 stores in 48 states, Canada, the Caribbean and Japan.

 

Moovies, Inc. (803-292-2072) recently signed a letter of intent to acquire the 13-unit chain of MoveAmerica, Inc. which trades as Movies To Go in IA.  The deal is expected to close by the end of this month.  Moovies, Inc. currently operates 88 video stores in nine eastern states.

 

Pelican Companies, Inc. (803-347-4235) recently entered into an agreement to acquire The Sunbelt Companies, Inc., which operates 10 building supply stores in AL, GA, NC and TN.  The deal is expected to be completed by the end of the year.

 

Video Update (612-222-0006) recently entered into agreements to acquire eight TVS video stores in Western Canada and 14 94 Video West, Inc. stores operating in Western Canada and Anchorage, AK.  Video Update currently operates 154 video stores throughout North America..

 

Carmike Cinemas (706-576-3400) recently signed an agreement to purchase 67 screens in MN, ND and SD from Midcontinent Theatre Co.  The deal is expected to close next month.  After the acquisition is completed, the company will operate 2,285 screens.

 

Kroger (513-762-4000) plans to acquire five Randall's Supermarkets in the Lexington, KY area.  The deal is expected to close during November.

 

Drug Emporium (614-548-7080) plans to acquire three stores from F&M Distributors in Milwaukee, WI.  Two of the stores will be renamed to Drug Emporium and the third store will be combined with an existing Drug Emporium store.
