Little Professor Book Company (313-994-1212) plans to open a 10,000 sq.ft. to 15,000 sq.ft. bookstore in north Fort Wayne, IN this year.

 

Manhattan Bagel Company (908-544-0155) and Amerada Hess Corporation recently entered a co-branding agreement in which Manhattan Bagel will lease space for kiosks within Hess Mart convenience stores and gasoline stations.  The first kiosk is expected to open in Bayville, NJ during the first quarter.  The kiosks will be operated by local Manhattan Bagel franchisees.

 

Albertson's, Inc. (208-385-6200) recently opened 23 supermarkets which brings its openings for this fiscal year, which ended February 1, to 58.  The company operates 764 stores in 19 states.

 

Hobby Lobby (405-681-5997) plans to build a 55,079 sq.ft. store in Oklahoma City, OK.  The unit is expected to open during August.

 

Proffitt's, Inc. (901-372-4300) plans to open an 86,000 sq.ft. department store at Morgantown Mall in Morgantown, WV during the fourth quarter of this year and an 86,000 sq.ft. store at Grand Central Mall in Parkersburg, WV during Spring 1997.

 

Arby's, Inc. (305-351-5100) plans to open 150 Arby's Roast Town and dual branded units nationwide this year.  The company dual-brands units with ZuZu's, a Mexican food chain and P.T. Noodles, a new concept that features corkscrew noodles topped with Oriental, Italian and American foods.

 

Sears, Roebuck & Co. (708-286-2500) plans to open a 150,000 sq.ft. store at South Park Mall in San Antonio, TX during Fall.  The store will replace an older store in San Antonio.

 

Java Centrale, Inc. (916-568-2310), through an agreement with Java Southeast, plans to open 50 Java Centrale units in Florida in the coming six years.  The first three are expected to open in Boca Raton, Coral Gables and West Palm Beach this month.

 

Walgreen Co. (708-940-2680) recently opened a 13,500 sq.ft. drug store in Colorado Springs, CO.  The new store replaces two smaller stores that the company recently closed in Colorado Springs.

American Multi Cinema (816-221-4000) and United Artists (303-792-8255) both recently filed plans to construct entertainment complexes on Route 611 in Warrington, PA.  AMC is planning a 24-screen multiplex with restaurants and UA is planning an 11-screen theater with an entertainment complex featuring video games.

 

Eddie Bauer (708-769-2596) plans to open 30 stores this year in the U.S., Germany and Japan.  The company's long range plans include as many as 400 new stores by 2000.  The company currently operates 411 units throughout North America.

 

Bradlees, Inc. (617-380-5863) plans to open a 94,000 sq.ft. store in Worcester, MA next month.  The store will replace a unit in Shrewsbury, MA which is closing next month.

 

JC Penney (214-431-1000) plans to expand its 86,000 sq.ft. department stores at East Towne Mall and West Towne Mall in Madison, WI by 55,000 sq.ft. each.  Space at both malls will be gained by converting the second floor storage areas into sales space.

 

McDonald's Corporation (708-575-3000) plans open as many as 3,200 total restaurants annually, in 1996 and 1997.  Between 1,800 and 2,200 of these will be traditional restaurants, with approximately two-thirds to be located outside of the U.S.  The remainder will be satellite units, about 60% of which will be in the U.S.  During 1995, the company opened 2,400 units worldwide and currently operates more than 18,000 restaurants in 89 countries.

New Construction

 

DiMucci Companies is currently developing State Street Market in Rockford, IL.  The 320,000 sq.ft. project will be anchored by Montgomery Ward's Electric Avenue & More, Dick's Clothing & Sporting Goods, PetsMart and Logli's supermarket.  A 25,000 sq.ft. space is available for lease.  Located adjacent to that project is East State Street Market, a 150,000 sq.ft. commercial area where ground was recently broken.  Completion is scheduled during Fall.  The company also recently broke ground on phase III of Cicero Marketplace in Cicero, IL.  Phase III will offer more than 122,000 sq.ft. of commercial space, which is available for lease.  The overall project, when completed, will encompass 650,000 sq.ft. and is anchored by a 120,000 sq.ft. Target, a 130,000 sq.ft. Sam's Club and a 102,000 sq.ft. Home Depot.

Homart is developing West Oaks Mall in Ocoee, FL.  The project will be anchored by a 213,000 sq.ft. Gayfers, a 197,000 sq.ft. Dillard's, a 144,400 sq.ft. Sears and a 97,300 sq.ft. JC Penney store.  A 14-screen, 56,000 sq.ft. AMC movie theater is also planned.  Space for 125 specialty stores and a food court will also be constructed.  The project is expected to open during the Fall.

Glimcher Realty Trust and Jordon Perlmutter & Co. recently broke ground on The Great Mall of the Great Plains in Olathe, KS.  The value-oriented super regional mall will feature more than one million sq.ft. initially with capacity for expansion in future phases.  The project will be built in a 360-degree racetrack design.  Eight major anchor tenants have committed to the project: Oshman's Supersports USA, Burlington Coat Factory, Linens 'N Things, Marshall's Superstore, Fun Factory, Reading China & More, Off 5th Saks Fifth Avenue Outlet and a 14-screen Dickinson Movie Theater.  Space for more than 165 specialty stores will be constructed, as will a 30,000 sq.ft. Fun Factory family entertainment facility and a food court with seating for more than 800.  At least 16 outparcels will be available, with Red Lobster and Burger King occupying two of them.  The project is expected to open during Spring 1997.

Financial News...

 

Manhattan Bagel Company, Inc. (908-544-0155) reported that systemwide retail sales increased 167.3% during 1995, from $15.047 million to $40.214 million, with comparable store sales increasing 10%.  The company ended 1995 with 160 stores in 15 states, a net gain of 102 units.  During 1996, the company plans to open 160 stores, including its first units in Canada.

 

Peaches Entertainment (305-432-4000) recently filed for Chapter 11 and will close three unprofitable stores in FL and SC.  The company plans to continue to operate its other 13 stores in AL, FL, NC and VA.

 

Funco, Inc. (612-946-7222) announced that net sales during its third quarter fell 12% to $31.897 million from $36.389 million last year.  Comparable store sales decreased 16%.  The company operates 182 stores, trading as FuncoLand, nationwide.

 

The Mills Corporation (202-965-3600) and Simon Property Group announced that documents have been finalized forming three joint ventures to develop and operate super-regional value retail malls over the next several years.  In addition to the agreement, both companies will continue to develop and manage its own portfolio of properties.

 

The May Department Stores Company (314-342-6300) plans to spin-off its Payless ShoeSource chain as an independent company which will become the largest independent shoe retailer in the country.  The transaction is expected to be completed during June.  As part of the planned spin-off, Payless plans to close or relocate 450 stores.  The company currently operates 4,557 shoe stores in 49 states, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands.

 

Charter Oaks Partners (703-905-4400) and Factory Outlet Stores of America have terminated the agreements under which FSA would have acquired the 3.2 million sq.ft. of unleveraged factory outlet space owned by The Public Employees Retirement System of Ohio and the management and business operations of Charter Oak Group.

 

Stop & Shop Companies, Inc. (617-380-8000) is selling its 64-unit chain of Li'l Peach convenience stores.  Stop & Shop acquired the stores in November when it purchased Purity Supreme, Inc.

 

Whole Foods Market (713-661-7753) announced that it plans to reorganize its Southern CA region of stores which includes changing the name of the nine Mrs. Gooch's units to Whole Foods Market.  The company currently operates 43 natural foods supermarkets in 10 states.

 

The Good Guys! (415-615-5000) announced that earnings for its first fiscal quarter fell to $6.7 million from $8.6 million during the first quarter last year.  Sales for its first quarter increased nine percent to $306.7 million from $281.658 million last year, but comparable store sales fell six percent.  During the quarter, the company opened four stores in CA, NV and WA and is looking to open as many as 10 more units during the remainder of fiscal 1996.

 

Tandycrafts, Inc. (817-568-7800) reported a second quarter net loss after restructuring charge of $12.379 million, compared to net income of $4.097 million during the second quarter last year.  The results reflect the company's adoption of a strategic restructuring and consolidation program designed to increase its competitive position and increase value to its shareholders.  The company also reported that net sales for the second quarter fell 2% to $74.347 million.  As part of the restructuring, Tandcrafts will be comprised of three specialty retail operations: Tandy Leather, Joshua's Christian Stores and Sav-On Discount Office Supplies; and two manufacturing divisions: TWI and Frames and Framed Art.  Other components of the restructuring include the sale of Cargo Furniture & Accents; the sale or closing of David James Manufacturing, Brand Name Apparel and Prestige Leather Creations and the closing of 11 underperforming stores including five Joshua's, four Tandy Leather stores and two Sav-On Discount Office Supplies stores.

West Coast Entertainment Corp. Einstein Bros. Bagels, Inc. (303-202-3326) has agreed to acquire Noah's New York Bagels, Inc., which operates 37 stores in CA and WA.  Einstein plans to keep the Noah name and develop the concept in CA, OR and WA.

 

Claire's Stores, Inc. (708-860-6600) recently purchased 85 stores formerly operated by The Icing, Inc.  The company plans to continue to use The Icing name in mall locations where Claire's already has stores.  In malls where Claire's does not have stores, The Icing stores will be renamed Claire's, Etc.  The acquisition increases Claire's store count to more than 1,400 units.

 

47th Street Photo (718-643-3300), which recently emerged from bankruptcy, was purchased by Stuart and Ira Held for $2 million.  The brothers plans to raise $48 million through a public stock offering and use the proceeds to open new stores.  The company, which only has one store open, is planning to open a unit on Wall Street in Manhattan, NY and a unit on Long Island, NY this year.

 

Arby's, Inc. (305-351-5100) and T.J. Cinnamons, Inc. (201-422-0910) jointly announced that they had reached an agreement in principle in which Arby's will purchase the trademarks, service marks, recipes and secret formulas of T.J. Cinnamons.  Arby's will license back to T.J. Cinnamons the ability to operate existing locations and grant licenses for full-concept T.J. Cinnamons Bakeries and to distribute T.J. Cinnamons products through retail grocery outlets.  Arby's will pay $1.75 million at the closing, which is subject to due diligence and other conditions, and $1.25 million by the end of this year.  The deal also calls for the payment of up to an additional $6 million over time dependent upon the amount of T.J. Cinnamons product sales by Arby's.
