Retailers Keeping Up with The Times

 

RCS (212-949-6935), a leading computer hardware and software retailer, recently launched RCSnet, the company's Internet-based computer store and service center.  The Web site, which features both the full RCS products line, including more than 30,000 products and daily computer industry news updates, is the first to offer an "Ask the Specialist" on-line help deck for the entire Internet community.  RCS customers can also get free technical support.  RCS, which operates a flagship retail store in New York City, created the Web Site in response to an extensive customer survey done last year.  To access the site type http://www.rcsnet.com.

 

Mesa House Publishing (817-339-8889) recently released The Site Kit, a new book and computer software package designed to help restaurant and retail companies evaluate sites for potential occupancy.  The book and software integrates information from 30 different fields and three demographics zones to predict the quality of a piece of real estate.  For each site, the software assigns relative weights based on the user's assessment of the business and market, calculates a final site quality estimate and generates a two-page printed report which details final scores in the 30 categories.  The categories include population, business activity, cannibalism, drop-in features and trade area data.  Users can customize the software by changing defaults to more accurately reflect the factors driving the business for their particular concept.  The Site Kit includes a 176-page book, site questionnaires, software and a user's guide.  It sells for $89.  The book alone, The Site Book: A Field Guide To Commercial Real Estate Evaluation, sells for $17.99.

 

Publix Supermarkets (813-688-1188) plans to add SunTrust Bank branches to as many as 20 supermarkets in the Atlanta, GA area this year.  The full-service branches will be open seven days a week.

 

Albertson's (208-385-6200) and First Palm Beach Bancorp., Inc. recently signed an agreement that allows First Palm Beach to place bank branches in six supermarkets in southern FL.  Additional branches are planned.

 

Starbucks Coffee Company (206-447-1575) and Pepsi-Cola Company plans to market a bottled version of Starbucks' Frappuccino drink this summer.  The beverage will be sold at convenience stores and supermarkets along the West Coast.

 

Hannaford Bros. Co. (207-883-2911) and KeyCorp recently executed an exclusive licensing agreement calling for the opening of 30 full-service Key Bank units inside Hannaford Bros. supermarkets in ME, NY, NH and VT.

 

Kroger (513-762-4000) recently added Ticketmaster outlets to 25 of its supermarkets in Marion County, IN.  The company plans to add the outlets to other Kroger stores throughout the state.

 

 

Who's Openings and Where...

 

Burger King (305-378-3243) plans to open a restaurant in downtown Duluth, MN next month.  The company is also planning to open as many as 125 restaurants in federal Empowerment Zone communities nationwide within the coming five years.

 

Checkers Drive-In Restaurants, Inc. (813-441-3500) and Dunkin' Donuts (617-961-4000) are currently testing a co-branding unit in Orlando, FL.  The test will be expanded to other Checkers units in the coming months.  Additional expansion will be determined by the results of the test program.

 

Domino's Pizza (313-930-3030) recently opened its 1,000th international store in Perth, Australia.  The company is looking to have 3,000 international stores by the year 2000 and its overall goal is to eventually have more international units than domestic units.  Currently, the company operates 5,200 units nationwide.

 

Food Lion (704-633-8250) plans to open 50 supermarkets this year.

 

Barnes & Noble, Inc. (212-633-3512) recently opened a 30,000 sq.ft. bookstore in Oklahoma City, OK; a 22,800 sq.ft. unit at Lakeshore Marketplace in Norton Shores, MI; a 25,000 sq.ft. unit in Maple Grove, MN; a 30,000 sq.ft. store in Lafayette, LA; a 21,600 sq.ft. unit in Macon, GA; and a 25,000 sq.ft. unit in Fayetteville, AR.  The company is also planning to open a 25,000 sq.ft. unit on an outlot of Oak Hollow Mall in High Point, NC.

 

Federated Department Stores (513-579-7905) plans to use 200,000 sq.ft. of space being vacated by Emporium at Valley Fair in Santa Clara, CA for an expanded Macy's men's store and home furnishings section beginning in April.  The move will allow Macy's to expand its women's fashions and accessories lines in its existing Macy's store at the mall.  The company also announced that its Bloomingdale's store at the Mall of America in Bloomington, MN plans to test two in-store boutiques.  One will be a 700 sq.ft. full service bridal shop by Mary Kay's Bridal of Edina and the other will be an 800 sq.ft. Mimi Maternity shop.  If the test proves successful, additional in-store shops may open at other Bloomingdale's stores.

 

Kittle's Home Furnishing Center, Inc. (317-849-5300) plans to open furniture stores in Lafayette, IN and Columbus, OH during the third quarter of this year.

 

Pudgie's Chicken, Inc. (516-222-8833) plans to co-brand its first unit with Baskin-Robbins in New York City.  The 1,300 sq.ft. unit is expected to be opened next month.

 

Wal*Mart Stores (501-273-4000) plans to open a 134,000 sq.ft. unit at Delta Oaks Shopping Center in Eugene, OR and an 80,000 sq.ft. unit in Cottage Grove, OR.  In addition, the company announced that it plans to open stores in Halifax, Nova Scotia; St. Hyacinthe and Rouyn-Noranda, Quebec; Kanata and Ottawa, Ontario in Canada.

 

Outback Steakhouse (813-282-1225) plans to open a 6,000 sq.ft. restaurant in Rock Hill, SC during Spring.

 

Consolidated Products, Inc. (317-633-4100) plans to accelerate the growth of its Steak n Shake restaurant chain by opening 240 units in the coming five years.  The previous goal was 160 units.  The company currently operates 187 units.

Pic 'N Save (904-350-9531) plans to emerge from Chapter 11 protection this month as one company operating 27 stores in FL and GA.  The new company will be known as Pic 'N Save, Inc.

 

Nordstrom (206-628-2111) reported that its fourth quarter profit fell 22% to $54.1 million from $69.9 million during the same period last year.  The company reported that its fourth quarter total sales were up 4.3% to $1.24 billion, but that its comparable store sales fell one percent.  For its fiscal year, the company saw its profit fall 19% to $165.1 million from $202.9 million last year.

 

Grow Biz International, Inc. (612-520-8500) reported that its revenues for 1995 were $100.2 million compared to 1994's revenue of $83.6 million.  Net income for 1995 was reported at $2 million, compared to $1.4 million during 1994.  The company operates and franchises 662 Play It Again Sports stores, 157 Once Upon A Child stores, 44 Computer Renaissance stores, 94 Disc Go Round stores and eight Music Go Round stores nationwide.

 

Sears (708-286-2500) announced that its 50% interest in the Prodigy on-line service is up for sale.  Sears is selling its stake so it can concentrate on its retailing business.

 

DIY Home Warehouse, Inc. (216-328-5100) reported 1995 fiscal year earnings of $3.097 million, compared to FY94 earnings of $4.267 million.  Sales for the year were up 30% to $178 million compared to $136 million during FY94.  However, the increase in net sales attributed to new stores was 35%, while comparable store sales dropped five percent.  During 1995, the company opened five stores and currently operates 16 home improvement units in OH.

 

J.C. Penney Company, Inc. (214-431-1000) reported that its fiscal year net income, ended January 27, 1996, was $838 million, a decrease from FY95 net income of $1.057 billion.  For the year, retail sales increased 0.9% to $2.05 billion.

 

Autozone, Inc. (901-325-4600) reported that its second quarter net income increased 15% to $27.3 million from $23.8 million during the same quarter last year.  Second quarter sales increased 17% to $425.8 million from $364.1 million and comparable store sales increased three percent.  During the quarter, the company opened 58 stores including its first in PA, and currently operates 1,251 units in 27 states.
