May Department Store Company (314-342-6300) and Kimco Realty Corp. have agreed to acquire
the 13-unit chain of Strawbridge & Clothier department stores and 27-unit chain of
Clover discount stores of Philadelphia, PA. May
Company, which is purchasing the Strawbridge & Clothier division for approximately
$203 million, plans to continue to operate the department stores under the Strawbridge
name through its Hecht's division. Last
August, May Company purchased the John Wanamaker chain of Philadelphia and converted the
stores to Hecht's. With this purchase, the
company now plans to rename most of the former Wanamaker stores Strawbridge. Kimco is acquiring Clover for an undisclosed
amount and plans to close all of the units, located in DE, NJ and PA, by September. After liquidating all of the merchandise and
fixtures, Kimco plans to sell the real estate to other companies. Kohl's Corp. is believed to be interested in 11 of
the sites. I
Can't Believe It's Yogurt (214-392-3012) recently was acquired by Yogen Fruz of Canada for
$14 million. The sale includes 194 yogurt
stores in the U.S., 75 franchise kiosks, 807 non-traditional locations and 268
international locations. Following the
acquisition, Yogen Fruz will operate 2,509 units in 67 countries. Tandycrafts,
Inc. (817-568-7800) recently sold its Prestige Leather Creations division to Prestige's
current management team. Albertson's,

Homeland Stores, Inc. supermarket in Ponca City, OK. The

definitive agreement to sell its company to Royal Ahold for approximately $2.9 billion,
which includes $1.1 billion for assumption or refinancing of interest bearing debt. Stop & Shop currently operates 116

News The
Cato Corporation (704-554-8510) reported fiscal 1995 net income of $12 million, a 34%
decrease from FY94's net income of $18.1 million. FY95
sales of $476.6 million was a three percent increase over FY94 sales of $463.7 million
with comparable store sales falling five percent. During
the year, the company opened 37 stores, closed 12 and ended with 671 units in 22 states. The company trades as Cato Fashion/Cato Plus and
It's Fashion. Woolworth
Corporation (212-553-2000) announced that its Board of Directors will recommend that its
shareholders vote against a proposal made by Greenway Partners, L.P. that Woolworth spin
off its Athletic Footwear and Apparel Division because the spinoff proposal is currently
not a strategic alternative and significant enhancement of shareholder value could not be
accomplished. Family
Dollar Stores, Inc. (704-847-6961) reported that its second quarter sales increased 6.5%
to $448.274 million from $420.926 million during the second quarter last year. However, net income fell 6.5% to $15.936 million
from $17.04 million last year. Comparable
store sales fell 0.6% during the quarter. The
company operates 2,498 stores in 38 states. Leggett
Stores, Inc. (804-799-8300) is reportedly considering a buyout offer from an unidentified
major retailer, believed to be Belk, Dillard's or Proffitt's. Leggett currently operates 43 stores, most of

& Clothier (215-629-7100) reported that sales for its fiscal year fell 2.3% to
$980.598 million from $1.003 billion last year. A
loss of $8.787 million was reported for the year compared to earnings of $20 million the
previous year. Comparable store sales fell

seven percent to $179.4 million from $167.9 million during FY95. Total sales in FY96 jumped 26% to $7.03 billion
