Home Improvement Tenants Seeking Sites Nationwide

 

D.I.Y. Home Warehouse, Inc. trades as D.I.Y. Home Warehouse at 16 locations in OH.  The home improvement stores occupy spaces of 83,000 sq.ft. in freestanding facilities.  Plans call for two openings in the coming 18 months.  Expansion will take place in the existing market.  The company also reported a first quarter loss of $109,000 compared to earnings of $503,000 during the same period last year.  Sales for the quarter increased 29% to $39.1 million from $30.3 million last year.  Comparable store sales decreased four percent.

New Construction

 

Beechwood Company recently broke ground on a nine acre, 86,000 sq.ft. project in Walnut Creek, CA.  The site, which is occupied by a vacant PayLess Drugs and Union Bank branch, will be transformed into a new retail center with a 134-room Courtyard Hotel to be built by Marriott Corporation.  The retail section of the project will be anchored by Computer City, Staples and Thrifty PayLess.  Three pad sites are available for lease.  The project is expected to open during November.

Citicorp is currently redeveloping the retail space at its 1.8 million sq.ft. Citicorp Center in New York, NY.  The 70,000 sq.ft. project, called The Shops at Citicorp Center, is anchored by a 40,000 sq.ft. Barnes & Noble Bookstore.  Gateway Newstands recently leased 300 sq.ft. at the project.  The three-story site, encompassing the lower level, ground floor and first floor, has spaces ranging from 1,000 sq.ft. to 7,000 sq.ft. available.  The company is seeking electronics, music, ladies apparel and tech training tenants for its remaining space, but will consider any unique retail concept.  Over 57,000 people pass through the retail portion of the building daily.  A soft opening is planned for November with a grand opening planned for April 1997, the 20th anniversary of Citicorp Center.

Financial News...

 

Borders, Inc. (313-913-1323) recently presented the Canadian government with a second proposal that will allow it to open superstores through a joint venture with a Canadian partner.  The company's first proposal was met with objections.

 

Noodle Kidoodle (516-293-5300) reported that sales from continuing operations increased 38% last year to $32.1 million.  The company also reported a net loss of $5.3 million last year compared to a net loss of $4.5 million during the previous year.  The company currently operates 18 stores and is looking to open 15 stores this year.

 

Barnes & Noble, Inc. (212-633-3300) recently signed a new credit facility that includes a $100 million amortizing term loan and a $325 million revolving credit facility.  The agreements will allow the company to continue its expansion.  Last year the company opened 97 superstores and currently operates 371 superstores and 634 mall stores.

 

Winn-Dixie (904-783-5000) reported that sales for its third fiscal quarter were $3 billion, a 9.3% increase over sales from the third quarter last year.  Net earnings for the quarter increased 10.5% to $63.3 million from $56.9 million.  Comparable store sales increased 3.7% during the quarter.  The company, which operates 1,180 supermarkets, plans to open an additional 20 units during its fourth fiscal quarter.

 

Rite Aid Corporation (717-975-5000) has withdrawn its tender offer to acquire Revco D.S., Inc. citing Federal Trade Commission concerns.  In response to the FTC's concerns, Rite Aid had offered to sell 340 stores, but instead decided to withdraw its offer.  Through a statement, Rite Aid's chairman and CEO Martin Grass accused the FTC of not being impartial.  "When Rite Aid made an offer which totally responded to the FTC staff's demands, the bar was raised in such a way as to make it impossible for us to clear it," he said.

 

Tandy Corporation (817-390-3011) reported that its first quarter earnings were $52.389 million compared to $50.567 million during the first quarter last year.  Sales at its retail operations increased 22% for the quarter.  The company also announced that it plans to remerchandise its Incredible Universe stores, possibly by operating its Computer City stores within Incredible Universe outlets.  The company operates 6,800 RadioShack stores, 101 Computer City stores and 18 Incredible Universe stores.

 

Smart & Final, Inc. (213-589-1054) reported first quarter sales of $282.3 million, a 12% increase over last year's results.  Comparable store sales increased 6.7%.  During the quarter, the company opened six supermarkets in FL and currently operates 164 units in AZ, FL, NV and Mexico.

 

Brendle's, Inc. (910-526-5600) recently filed for Chapter 11 and announced that it plans to close 18 stores and reposition its remaining stores to focus on six merchandise categories that have demonstrated strength.  The company plans to focus on its jewelry, housewares, gift, party goods, crafts, and personal health care categories.

 

Planet Hollywood International, Inc. (407-363-7827) recently went public with its Initial Public Offering of stock.  The company is looking to raise $190.5 million to help it pay off some debt and open new restaurants.

 

Kmart Corp. (810-643-1000) plans to reorganize its Builders Square division by shifting its merchandise focus to home decorating in larger and more modern stores.

 

Aaron Rents, Inc. (404-231-0011) reported that its first quarter revenues were $64.7 million compared to $59.6 million during the first quarter last year.  Net earnings were $4.2 million, up from $3.3 million last year.  Systemwide revenues, which include franchised stores, were $71.5 million, a 13% include over last year's figure of $63.5 million.  The company currently operates 263 company and franchised stores.

 

Drug Emporium, Inc. (614-548-7080) reported that net income for its fiscal year was $2.342 million compared to a net loss of $5.391 million last year.  Total sales for the year were $738.8 million compared to $729.5 million the previous year.  The company operates and franchises 226 deep discount drug stores.

 

McDonald's Corporation (708-575-3000) reported its first quarter results.  For the quarter, its net income increased 11%, total revenues increased 12%, systemwide sales increased 10%, operating income increased six percent and operating income outside of the U.S. increased 15%.  During the quarter, the company opened 129 U.S. restaurants and 187 restaurants outside of the U.S. and ended the quarter with 18,696 units worldwide.

(212-633-3300) recently opened a 35,000 sq.ft. bookstore in San Antonio, TX.  The company plans to open a 23,000 sq.ft. bookstore in Bel Air, MD during the Fall; a 25,000 sq.ft. bookstore in Jensen Beach, FL during the Fall; a 25,000 sq.ft. unit in Norman, OK during the Fall; a 30,000 sq.ft. unit in Tulsa, OK during Spring 1997; a 35,000 sq.ft. bookstore in Lafayette, IN during Spring 1997; a 25,000 sq.ft. store at Hilltop Plaza in Richmond, CA during Spring 1997 and a 25,000 sq.ft. store in Eagen, MN during Spring 1997.

 

Hoyts Cinemas Corporation (617-267-2700) plans to build a 72,000 sq.ft., 15-screen movie theater at Solomon Pond Mall in Berlin, MA.  The unit is expected to open during March 1997.

 

Kmart Corp. (810-643-1000) recently opened a 118,000 sq.ft. store at Walnut Bottom Towne Center in South Middleton Township, PA.  The unit replaces a smaller store at Carlisle Plaza Mall.  The company is also planning to open a 160,000 sq.ft., three-floor store at 770 Broadway in Manhattan, NY during November and a store at One Penn Plaza in Manhattan, NY during September.

 

Virgin Retail Group (310-724-5967), which recently opened a 75,000 sq.ft. Virgin Megastore in the Times Square area of New York City, NY, is planning to open stores running 30,000 sq.ft. to 35,000 sq.ft. in Greenwich Village, the Wall Street area and Westbury, Long Island, NY within the coming two years.

 

Flagstar Cos. (803-597-8000), the parent company of the Denny's and El Pollo Loco restaurant chains, recently opened a dual-branded restaurant in Greenville, SC.  The unit marks the first El Pollo Loco restaurant on the East Coast.  Additional dual-branded units are expected to open in SC and GA.
