New Construction

 

Mall Properties recently entered into a two-year option to buy 100 acres of land from the Economic Development Authority of Newport News, VA with the idea of constructing a one million sq.ft. mall, a hotel and a freestanding store on the site.  No anchor tenants have been signed, and the company is seeking financing for the project before proceeding.  However, preliminary plans call for a two-level mall with three department stores encompassing 750,000 sq.ft. on 85 acres.  A later expansion could bring the mall's GLA to one million sq.ft.  A hotel and freestanding store, potentially a supermarket, are penciled in for the remainder of the parcel.  The land costs are in excess of $5.8 million and construction costs are estimated between $75 million and $100 million.  Mall Properties has a target opening date for the project of Fall 1999.

Store Closings

 

Woolworth Corporation (212-553-2000) plans to close its 109-unit Accessory Lady chain by the end of September.  The company, which is disposing its underperforming businesses, plans to convert a majority of the units to other chains operated by the company.

 

Borders, Inc. (313-913-1323) plans to close two 20,000 sq.ft. Planet Music stores in Houston, TX.  A portion of each store will be occupied by Borders Books and Music stores, which are located adjacent to the stores.

 

Tandy Corp. (817-390-3011) recently closed a 185,000 sq.ft. Incredible Universe store located near Potomac Mills Mall in Dale City, VA.  The company also closed an Incredible Universe store in Charlotte, NC.  Both stores had opened during October and November, respectively, of last year.  The stores were closed because their sales did not meet expectations.

The Limited, Inc. (614-479-7070) reported that its first quarter net sales increased 13% to $1.788 billion from $1.588 billion last year.  Operating income increased five percent to $53.8 million from $51.2 million and net income increased 39% to $28.2 million from $20.3 million.  The company operates  4,016 specialty stores trading as Limited Stores, Limited Too, Express, Lerner New York, Lane Bryant, Henri Bendel, Structure, Abercrombie & Fitch and Gaylan's.  The company also owns 83% of Intimate Brands, Inc. which operates 1,336 stores trading as Victoria's Secret Stores, Bath & Body Works, Cacique and Penhaligon's.

 

PetsMart, Inc. (602-944-7070) reported that its first quarter net sales were $310.2 million, a 23% increase over last year's results of $251.6 million.  First quarter net income was $900,000, compared to a first quarter net loss of $2 million last year.  Comparable store sales increased 12.1%.  During the quarter, the company opened 23 stores and currently operates 288 stores in 33 states.

 

Kmart Corporation (810-643-1000) reported a first quarter net loss from continuing operations of $38 million, compared to a net loss from continuing operations of $109 million last year.  Total sales were $7.58 billion, up 1.8% from last year's results of $7.443 billion.  Comparable store sales increased 4.5% during the quarter.  The company currently operates 2,159 Kmart stores, 167 Builders Square stores and 134 international units.

 

Garden Ridge Corporation (713-772-6262) reported that its first quarter net sales were $39.22 million, a 47% increase over net sales of $26.597 million reported during the first quarter last year.  Comparable store sales were even because many of the company's stores were closed the first week of February due to inclement weather.  Excluding that week, comparable store sales increased two percent.  During the quarter, the company opened two stores and currently operates 15 stores in FL, KY, NC, OK, TN and TX.  Three additional openings are planned for the balance of this year.

 

The Cato Corporation (704-554-8510) reported that its net income for the first quarter increased three percent to $7.721 million, up from $7.498 million during the first quarter last year.  Total revenues for the quarter were $123.5 million, a five percent increase over last year's results of $117.8 million.  During the quarter, the company opened 11 stores and currently operates 682 units in 22 states trading as Cato Fashion/Cato Plus and It's Fashion!

(313-913-1323) reported a first quarter net loss of $3.4 million, compared to a net loss of $5.6 million during the first quarter last year.  Consolidated sales for the quarter were $404 million, a 14.3% increase over last year's results of $353.6 million.  Sales in the Borders Superstore division increased 49.6% to $196.9 million compared to $131.6 million last year, and sales in the Waldenbooks Division fell 6.5% to $200.2 million from $214.2 million last year.  Comparable store sales increased 8.2% in the superstores division and fell 1.5% in the Waldenbooks division.  During the quarter, the company opened eight superstores and one Waldenbooks location.  The company closed 17 Waldenbook units and ended the quarter with 124 superstores and 976 Waldenbook units.

 

Kohl's Corporation (414-783-5800) reported that its first quarter sales increased 27.2% to $468.6 million from $368.4 million during the same period last year.  Net income for the quarter was $13.8 million, a 16.7% increase over last year's results of $11.8 million.  Comparable store sales increased 9.6%.  During the quarter, the company opened eight stores and is looking to open 14 more the balance of this year and as many as 30 units during 1997.  The company currently operates 136 department stores.

 

J. Baker, Inc. (617-828-9300) announced that it has agreed to call off the sale of its Shoe Corporation of America division to a group formed by division management and Bain Capital.  The two had reached a tentative agreement in April, but J. Baker, Inc. called off the agreement offering no explanation except that the company plans to "continue its efforts to sell the SCOA division on terms satisfactory to J. Baker."  SCOA operates 491 licensed shoe departments in specialty and department stores.
