Who's Opening and Where...

 

Manhattan Bagel Company, Inc. (908-544-0155), through its Canadian franchisee Comac Food Group, recently opened a 2,000 sq.ft. unit in Calgary, Alberta.  Seven more units are planned in western Canada this summer.

 

Egghead Software (509-891-4892), which has already opened 20 of its new format stores, is planning to open an additional five by the end of this year.

 

Electronics Boutique (610-430-8100) recently opened stores in BunDang and Seoul, South Korea.  The company is also planning to open 30 mall-based stores and a third Stop-n-Save Software unit this year.

 

Applebee's (913-967-4000) plans to open a 7,259 sq.ft. Rio Bravo Cantina restaurant in Wichita, KS through franchisee Heartland Rio.

 

CompUSA, Inc. Barnes & Noble, Inc. Shaw Industries, Inc. (706-278-3812), the world's largest maker of carpets, recently opened its first retail store, dba Shaw Carpet Showplace, in Butler, PA.  The company is also planning to open stores in West Mifflin, Robinson, Greensburg, Wilkins, New Castle and Pittsburgh, PA as part of its overall plan to open as many as 300 stores nationwide within the coming year.  Last month, the company reached an agreement to buy New York Carpet World, Inc. which operates 200 carpet stores.

 

Luby's Cafeterias, Inc. (210-654-9000) recently opened a 7,700 sq.ft. unit in Kerrville, TX.  The restaurant, which is 2,000 sq.ft. smaller than traditional Luby's units will be used as a prototype for the company's future expansion into small markets and downtown areas.

 

Home Depot (404-433-8211) plans to open 29 stores in the Northeast, 25 stores in the Southeast, 17 stores in the Midwest, 14 stores in the West and five stores in Canada this year.

Garden Fresh Restaurant Corp. Mergers & Acquisitions

 

Daka International (508-774-9900) recently purchased a 16.7% stake in La Salsa for $5 million.  Daka International also has options to acquire an additional 13.3% over the next 18 months.  La Salsa operates 57 La Salsa Fresh Mexican Grill restaurants while Daka operates the Fuddruckers chain.  The company plans to co-brand La Salsa with Fuddruckers in several CA test sites.

 

Flagstar (803-597-8190) recently acquired the Coco's, Carrows and JoJo's chains for $306.5 million.  Coco's operates 170 restaurants and licenses an additional 240 units in Japan and Korea, Carrows operates 157 restaurants and JoJo's operates 17 restaurants.

 

Woolworth Corporation (212-553-2000) recently sold, through its subsidiary Retail Company of Germany, its 50% interest in its New Yorker Sud Jeans und Sportswear GmbH division to the co-owner which will now own 100% of the business.  New Yorker Sud operates 30 stores in Germany.

 

 

Buyers & Sellers of Commercial Properties

First Union Real Estate Investments plans to acquire a portfolio of nine regional malls totaling six million sq.ft. from Marathon U.S. Realties, Inc. for $316 million.  First Union anticipates its equity investment will not exceed $50 million and intends to acquire the properties with a joint venture partner.  The properties are located in the Southwestern region and are generating in-line store sales of approximately $250 psf and are 94% occupied.  Anchor tenants include Dillard's, J.C. Penney, Sears, Wal*Mart, Mervyn's, McRaes and Foley's.  First Union Management, Inc., the property management affiliate of the company, will manage the properties.

Sports & Recreation, Inc. plans to sell 20 undeveloped parcels of land located adjacent to its stores in several states as well as a 130.5 acre site in Hillsborough County, FL.  The asking price for the Hillsborough site is $5.2 million.  In addition, the company is considering a sale/lease-back for 60 of its 85 stores.

Financial News...

 

Fred Meyer, Inc. (503-232-8844) reported that net sales for its first quarter increased 11.2% to $1.04 billion from $940 million during the first quarter last year.  Net income increased to $9.4 million from $3.1 million last year and comparable store sales increased 5.1%.  The company plans to open five full-size multi-department stores as well as complete the acquisition of several other companies during the remainder of 1996.

 

Edison Brothers Stores, Inc. (314-331-6000) reported a net loss of $17.7 million for its first quarter which included special after-tax charges of $11.3 million.  Excluding the charges, net loss was $6.4 million for the quarter, the same as reported during the first quarter last year.  First quarter sales were $258.1 million compared to $318.1 million last year and comparable store sales fell 4.6%.  The company plans to close 140 stores during its second fiscal quarter.  The company also announced that it plans to sell or close its 102-unit Zeidler & Zeidler menswear chain.  The division has been unprofitable for the past three years.

 

Shoe Carnival, Inc. (812-867-4105), a chain of 91 stores throughout the Midwest and Midsouth, reported that its first quarter net income increased 226% to $921,000 from $283,000 last year.

 

Rally's Hamburgers, Inc. (502-254-8900) was recently notified by the Nasdaq stock market that the company would continue to be listed while it executes its plan for returning to compliance.  During April, Nasdaq notified Rally's that it was deficient in the net tangible asset criteria for continued listing on its system.  Rally's recently submitted a plan to Nasdaq to return to compliance and was therefore granted the conditional exception allowing it to remain listed.

 

Prime Retail, Inc. (800-628-9467) reported comparable center sales for the 12-month period ended March 31 of $237 per square foot, which are 13% higher than the outlet industry average of $210 per square foot as reported by the Outlet Center Sales Index compiled by the ICSC.  In addition, Prime Retail reported a 0.7% loss in comparable center sales compared to the industry average of 1.3%.  Prime Retail's portfolio consists of 17 operating centers in 14 states which total more than 4.3 million sq.ft.

 

Circuit City Stores, Inc. (804-527-4000) reported that its net earnings for its first quarter were $16.8 million, compared to $24.6 million during the first quarter last year.  First quarter total sales increased 16% to $1.62 billion from $1.39 billion with comparable store sales falling four percent.  During the quarter, the company opened eight Circuit City stores in MI, NC and WI and one CarMax location in Charlotte, NC.

 

Just For Feet, Inc. (205-987-3450) recently offered 1.95 million shares of its common stock.  The proceeds raised by the sale will be used to finance additional store openings, general corporate purposes and possible acquisitions.  The company currently operates 40 stores in 12 states.

 

Value City Department Stores, Inc. (614-471-4722) reported that net sales for its fiscal third quarter increased 13.3% to $207.6 million from $183.4 million last year.  Net income for the quarter was $900,000 compared to a net loss of $3.2 million last year.  Comparable store sales increased 3.9% for the quarter.  The company plans to open stores in Niles and Melrose, IL and Seaview and Manalapan, NJ during August as well as stores in Iverson, MD, Paramus, NJ and Memphis, TN during October.  Currently, the company operates 85 stores throughout the Eastern and Midwestern regions.

Sizzler International (310-827-2300) recently closed 130 Sizzler restuarants and six Buffalo Ranch Steakhouses when it filed for Chapter 11 bankrutpcy.  The company filed for bankruptcy to get out of the rent payments for the closed units.
