Financial News...

Belk Companies (704-357-1000) plans to change the name of the Leggett stores it acquired last October to Belk. The change is expected to be completed at the 31 remaining Leggett stores by the end of March.

Circuit City Stores, Inc. (804-527-4000) reported that third quarter total sales for its CarMax Group increased 57% to $118.4 million from $75.5 million during the third quarter last year. Comparable store sales increased 22%. During the quarter, the company opened one unit and currently operates six units. A seventh unit is expected to open in Tampa, FL this month. Net losses were $3.9 million, compared to a net loss of $1.8 million during the third quarter last year. Third quarter total sales in the Circuit City Group increased two percent to $1.75 billion from $1.71 billion. Comparable store sales fell 10%. Net earnings were $23.7 million, compared to $33.3 million last year. During the quarter, the company opened 36 superstores and currently operates 429 superstores and 47 mall-based Circuit City Express stores nationwide.

International Dairy Queen (612-830-0200) reported that its net earnings for the year increased to $34.445 million from $33.216 million during 1995. Revenues increased to $411.5 million from $371.9 million. The company operates and franchises more than 5,710 Dairy Queen stores and 420 Orange Julius stores throughout North America.

Winn-Dixie (904-783-5000) reported that its second quarter sales increased 2.1% to $4.1 billion from $3.9 billion during the second quarter last year. Comparable store sales fell 0.6% for the quarter. Net earnings for the quarter were $47.7 million, down 34.2% from $72.5 million during the second quarter last year. During the quarter, the company opened 45 stores averaging 50,300 sq.ft., closed 44 older stores averaging 29,500 sq.ft. and remodeled 50 stores. The company currently operates 1,179 supermarkets with 63 under construction.

Grossman's, Inc. (617-830-4000) reported that its sales from ongoing operations for 1996 increased 10.5% to $337.8 million from $306.6 million during 1995. Comparable store sales fell 4.3% for the year. By division, Contractors' Warehouse 1996 sales increased 8.3% to $278.9 million from $257.6 million with comparable store sales down 4.9% for the year. Mr. 2nd's Bargain Outlet store sales for 1996 increased 22.7% to $58.9 million from $48 million in 1995, but comparable store sales were down 1.1 percent. The company also announced that it is experiencing a severe liquidity shortage that is adversely affecting its Contractors' Warehouse operations and that the company is reviewing potential sources of additional liquidity and exploring all options including filing Chapter 11. The company currently operates 15 Contractors' Warehouse stores in CA, IN, KY and OH and 26 Mr. 2nd's Bargain Outlet stores in MA, NY and RI.

Manhattan Bagel Company, Inc. (908-544-0155) reported that its unaudited systemwide sales for 1996 increased 114.4% to $86.2 million from $40.2 million during 1995. Comparable store sales were up 3.4% for the year. During 1996, the company opened 158 stores and ended the year with 294 units in 17 states and Canada, compared to 152 units in 15 states at the end of 1995.

Bradlees, Inc. (617-380-5863) was recently granted a six month extension of its right to exclusively file a plan of reorganization with the U.S. Bankruptcy Court by the Court. The decision will help the company's continuing efforts to restore it to profitability. In asking for the extension, the company reported that it lost $5 million on sales of $155.6 million during the holiday season. The company also announced that it plans to close a store on Long Island, NY and eliminate 150 jobs at its corporate headquarters.

The Good Guys! (415-615-5000) reported that its first quarter net earnings were $2 million, down from $6.7 million during the first quarter last year. Sales for the first quarter were down seven percent to $286.6 million from $306.7 million last year with comparable store sales down 12% for the quarter.

Mergers & Acquisitions

Apple South, Inc. (706-342-4552) recently signed an agreement to sell its 10 Hardee's restaurants in FL to KEBM Enterprises, Inc. The deal is expected to be completed by the end of the first quarter. Apple South acquired the franchise rights to Hardee's in 1986, the same year it acquired the franchise rights to Applebee's Neighborhood Grill and Bar restaurants. Over the past 10 years, the company focused its growth on the Applebee's units and did not expand the Hardee's chain. Today, the company is the largest operator of Applebee's restaurants. As a result, sales from the Hardee's units represented less than two percent of the company's sales last year. Apple South currently operates 235 Applebee's restaurants, 63 Don Pablo Mexican restaurants and 11 Harrigan's Grill and Bar restaurants.

Trans/Pacific Restaurants, Inc. (714-250-0331), which is operating under Chapter 11 protection, recently reached an agreement to sell 30 of its restaurants to two groups for a combined $4.4 million. TP Acquisitions, Inc. plans to acquire 22 Monterey Bay Canners and Jolly Roger restaurants in CA and HI for $3.3 million while Frank Sallee plans to acquire eight licensed Sizzler restaurants in HI for $1.1 million. Both buyers plans to operate the restaurants under their present names.

All American Good Group, Inc. (201-244-9336) recently announced that the company has acquired eight stores in the New Haven, CT market. Four of the stores, trading as Bagel Connection, will be converted to Goldberg's Original Old World Bagel stores. The other four stores may be converted to the Goldberg's name in the near future. The stores are the company's first in CT. The company currently operates and franchises 18 stores trading as Goldberg's and Sammy's New York Bagels.
