Who's Opening & WhereJollibee (650-757-9713) recently opened a 2,700 sq.ft. freestanding facility at the Wrigley Marketplace in Long Beach, CA near McDonalds, Carls Jr. and Burger King. The company plans to open another unit in Cerritos, CA next month. The concept specializes in hamburgers with a sweeter flavor than the standard American fast food hamburgers, primarily because its preferred by the Asian-Pacific customer, and the company is focusing growth on communities with a large Filipino-American population base. Expansion plans entail opening locations in NJ and HI during the next year.
Kohls (262-703-7000) is opening a store at the Gunbarrel Pointe shopping center in Chattanooga, TN. The department store will co-anchor with Goodys and Target. Kohls plans to open 55 to 60 stores this year, of which 34 units will be located in the New York tri-state region. Next year, the chain expects to open 12 stores in the Atlanta, GA market.
Wal*Mart (501-273-4000) plans to develop a 33-acre site in Springfield, OR. The plan includes a 219,000 sq.ft. supercenter Wal*Mart store and a 105,000 sq.ft. yet-to-be-named anchor, along with small shops. Wal*Mart also plans to open two supercenter stores in York County, VA. One of the sites is on East Rochambeau Drive, next to Lowes and the other is at the former Cinema City drive-in. The company is also underway with the construction of a 150,000 sq.ft. Sams Club and an adjacent 255,000 sq.ft. supercenter in Oklahoma City, OK.
Eckerd Drugs (727-395-6000) plans to open an 11,200 sq.ft. store in Holmes Beach, FL and after community opposition to Eckerds standard prototype, the chain agreed to a building with a metal roof, weather vanes, cupolas, gabled ends and a smaller version of its blue-trademark sign.
Home Depot (770-433-8211) is looking for up to eight locations in the Chicago area and its finding it difficult to source 10-acre parcels, as a result the company is reviewing a scaled-down version for urban areas. Home Depot has signed four leases for its Expo Design Center stores in IL, including the former Homemakers building in Lincoln Park in addition to sites in Aurora, Downers Grove and Vernon Hills, and expects these units to open by January 2002. Projections call for the opening of 200 Expos by 2005. The home improvement chain is also scouting the northeast FL market in hopes of opening up to 11 stores in the area during the next two years. Home Depot also plans to open a 116,000 sq.ft. store on Maplecrest and Rotham Roads in Ft. Wayne, IN. The company expects to break ground this fall on a 118,000 sq.ft. store in the Lake Manawa Power Centre, anchored by Wal*Mart, Menards and Toys R Us, in Council Bluffs, NE. The company has two more stores planned for the Omaha, NE market at a site on 144th Street and another on 72nd Street. Home Dept expects to open its second store in AK with a 130,000 sq.ft. unit in Muldoon, a suburb of Anchorage. The company recently broke ground of a 116,000 sq.ft. store on Orchard and Trail Roads in Aurora, CO.
Sears (847-286-2500) recently signed a lease for its The Great Indoors concept at a former Kmart store in Schaumburg, IL. The company is also negotiating on a location in Lombard, IL. The Great Indoors concept is expected to grow by 150 stores in the next five to eight years.
Huddle House (404-377-5700) signed an agreement with its franchisee, Mountaineer Restaurants, to open 25 locations in WV during the next six years. Mountaineer Restaurants currently operates 40 units trading as Papa Johns.
Model Cleaners (412-489-9553) operates six dry cleaning locations in the Pittsburgh market. The company, which accepts online orders from customers to arrange for pick and delivery and also offers a drive-thru window, plans to open its seventh unit next month in Rostraver, PA.
Recovery Management Corp. (816-257-6200) plans to open a 200,000 sq.ft. store in a former state warehouse in North Highlands, CA. The store, a counterpart to the companys Kansas City, MO store, will carry closeouts and discontinued stock from sewing machines to golf clubs and health products. The company also sells surplus goods on its Web site at www.cargolargo.com.
Whole Foods Market (713-661-7753) plans to open a 20,000 sq.ft. specialty supermarket in Cherry Creek, CO by October and a store in Highlands Ranch late 2001.
Kmart (248-643-1000) plans to open a combination discount department store and supermarket at West Fond du Lac and West North Avenues in the central city neighborhood of Milwaukee, WI.
Borders (734-477-1100) plans to open a 25,000 sq.ft. store at the Union Landing Shopping Center in Union City, CA during November.
Krispy Kreme (336-725-2981) plans to open four 3,600 sq.ft. doughnut shops in Oklahoma City and three in Tulsa, OK.
Walgreens (847-940-2500) plans to open at total of six stores in the Salt Lake City, UT market in the next 18 months. The stores are expected to be freestanding and utilize approximately 14,500 sq.ft. The first of the six units recently opened in West Valley Center.
Famous Daves (612-294-1300) inked a five-unit deal with William Theisen, the founder of Godfathers Pizza, to open locations in Omaha, NE; Phoenix, AZ and Denver, CO. The franchisor plans to open four company-owned units this year.
Staples (508-370-8500) plans to open a 28,000 sq.ft. store on 15th Avenue and Garfield Street in Seattle during March.
Costco Wholesale Corp. (425-313-6360) plans to open a 139,000 sq.ft. store in St. Loius Park, a suburb of the Twin Cities market. Construction is slated to commence this summer on the 12-acre site located near the Park Palace shopping center on Minnesota 100 and I-394.
Aaron Rents, Inc. (404-231-0011) plans to open at least 30 company-owned stores and 50 franchised units in the remainder of this year. During the first half of this year, the company opened a total of 43 stores.
Circuit City (804-527-4000) plans to open a 33,000 sq.ft. store at the Crossgates Commons in Albany, NY during September. The opening was delayed for months, due to the companys vacillating on combining electronics and appliances in its inventory mix. Circuit City currently intends to leave the major appliances business and focus exclusively on selling consumer electronics. All of its stores will be converted to the new format in the coming three years.
Amercican Kiosk Corp. (747-425-5745), the parent company of Zeros, Mr. Submarine, Inc., signed a five-year, 10-store area development agreement with franchisee, RNB, Inc., to open units throughout New England, CO and FL.
Von Maur (319-388-2200) is underway with construction of a 120,000 sq.ft. department store at Town East Square in Witchita, KS. The store, occupying space formerly housing Henrys department store, is scheduled to open in 2002.
Gazoontite (415-778-0400), www.gazoontite.com an online business selling asthma and allergy relief products that laid off half its staff of 100 and dropped dot-com from its name, plans to open 20 units across the country, adding to its four existing stores.
Best Buy (612-995-7049) plans to open a store this fall on Northeast Northgate Way in Seattle, WA, marking its entry to the market. Best Buy also plans to open five stores in Totowa, Secaucus, Union, Woodbridge and East Hanover, NJ. The sites in Union, East Hanover and Secaucus formerly housed Tops Appliance stores. Other electronic chains expanding in NJ include Sixth Avenue Electronics (973-467-0100), a six-unit chain with plans to open a unit in Southern NJ this year followed by three stores in 2001, and Harvey Electronics (201-842-0078) expects to open two stores this year and up to four units in 2001.
DSW Shoe Warehouse (614-497-1199) recently opened a 24,000 sq.ft. store in Robison, a suburb of Pittsburgh, PA. The company could open as many as five units in the greater Pittsburgh market.
