Who's Opening & Where


Wal*Mart (501-273-4000) plans to open a 174,000 sq.ft. supercenter near the intersection of Highway Nine and Freeport Road in Decorah, IA. The proposed site sits in the Upper Iowa River flood plain, and although the IA Department of Natural resources has granted permission for the store, the Decorah City Council has more stringent guidelines and has not approved the plan. Wal*Mart currently operates a 74,000 sq.ft. unit in Centrum Plaza in Decorah. The company also plans to open a 150,000 sq.ft. supercenter located at the intersection of U.S. 27 and Georgia Highway 136 in Lafayette, GA. Another superstore is slated for Hixson, GA to replace the existing Wal*Mart store.

 

Pier 1 Imports (817-878-8000) plans to open 50 units by the end of the third quarter of fiscal year 2001.

 

Radio Shack (817-415-3224) plans to open a 2,400 sq.ft. store at Southgate Station, a 8,160 sq.ft. shopping center located between Hollywood Video and Los Amigos on Irvin Cobb Drive in Paducah, KY.

 

Haverty Furniture Companies Inc. (404-443-2900) plans to open two stores during 2001.

 

Eckerd Drug (727-395-6000) plans to open an 11,000 sq.ft. drug store at Kmart Plaza located at the intersection of North Monroe and Tharpe Streets in Tallahassee, FL. Kmart has abandoned the plaza, and plans call for the demolition of the empty building and the construction of a new Publix supermarket on the site. Both Eckerd and Publix currently operate stores across the street from Kmart Plaza at Northwood Centre, and both stores are slated for relocation across the street.

 

Kaufmann’s Home Store (412-232-2000) plans to open an 80,000 sq.ft. unit in a space formerly occupying a Jenss Department Store located at Boulevard Mall in Buffalo, NY. Because of the large size of the space, Kaufmann’s intends to offer its full line of home products and accessories at the store.

 

Bi-Lo (864-234-8708) plans to open a 57,000 sq.ft. superstore at Plantation Point Shopping Center, a 115,000 sq.ft. center located on 38th Avenue North in Myrtle Beach, SC. The enhanced supermarket will contain a pharmacy, a Grand Strand cafe, a Coastal Federal bank branch and a full-service floral department. The center will also contain six freestanding pad sites, one of which will house a CVS pharmacy. Bi-Lo plans to open or remodel a total of 50 stores this year.

 

the Mad Cow (405-495-2333) will open its first hamburger restaurant at Westgate Plaza on Northwest 38 in Oklahoma City, OK. The store will occupy 2,500 sq.ft.

 

Checkers (770-433-3226) plans to open a double drive-through restaurant on a .75-acre parcel located on Washington Road in Augusta, GA. The store will be the third in the area for franchisee Checkco Corp.

 

Home Depot (770-433-8211) plans to open a 127,000 sq.ft. store on 10 acres located on IL Highway 161 in Swansea, IL. The store would sit on part of the site formerly occupied by Meyer Brothers Oldsmobile. Plans call for at least two other businesses, possibly restaurants, to occupy space at the site as well.

 

Karns (717-766-6477) grocery stores, which currently operates five markets, is considering expanding into York County, PA with the opening of a unit in northern York County and another closer to the city of York. The company has also been mentioned as a possible tenant for the 29,000 sq.ft. space at 255 Glen Drive in East Manchester County, PA.

 

Rave Girl (212-279-4961) recently opened its first two stores in the Philadelphia, PA market, one each at Granite Run Mall in Media, PA and Oxford Valley Mall in Langhorne, PA.

 

Whitehall Jewelers (312-782-6800) plans to open 66 stores this year, four more than originally planned, on the strength of an increase in its credit facility from $110 million to $166 million.

 

Diane’s Good To Go (303-388-4425) will open its fifth "home-meal replacement" food store at the intersection of West 12th Avenue and Speer Boulevard in Denver, CO. The concept offers fully prepared meals cooked the night before and instantly refrigerated in airtight containers to preserve flavor. The meals are displayed the next day in cold cases where customers can take them home for reheating, or heat them in microwaves inside the store. A sixth unit is planned for the Denver market in the coming months.

 

Costco (425-313-8100) is building a 10,000 sq.ft. expansion to its store in Issaquah, WA. When the expansion is complete in mid-November, the store will measure 150,000 sq.ft.

 

Zales Jewelers (972-580-4000) opened a jewelry store at the Prime Outlets Mall in Oshkosh, WI.

 

Jersey Mike’s (732-282-2323) opened the first of five planned submarine sandwich shops in the Dayton/Troy, OH market in the Kroger Shopping Center located on Route 55 just off Interstate 75. The company currently operates 29 restaurants in OH.

 

Reeds Jewelers (910-350-3100) has committed to open six stores in the balance of 2000. To date, the company has opened three stores in 2000.

 

Keg Steakhouse & Bar (425-643-3809) plans to open an 8,100 sq.ft. steakhouse in Southwest Crossing located on the southwest corner of Bryant Irvin and Loop 820 in the Metroplex area of Fort Worth, TX during November 2000. The company had operated five steakhouses under the same name in the Metroplex before 1985, when the company dropped its franchise and changed its name.

 

Waffle House (770-729-5986) plans to open a restaurant at Ford Square, a 35-acre mixed-use retail and office project located near the intersection of U.S. Highway 62 and Interstate 24 in Calvert City, KY.
