Who's Opening & Where


OfficeMax (216-471-6900) confirmed plans to have opened a total of 55 units by year’s end, 47 of which were open by the end of the third quarter. The remaining eight stores are all expected to be operating in time for the year-end holiday shopping season. Additionally, the company recommitted to reducing the size of its 23,500 sq.ft. prototypes to 20,000 sq.ft. in order to better take advantage of ‘just-in-time’ deliveries from its new PowerMax distribution facilities.

 

Staples (508-370-8500) plans to open a 24,000 sq.ft. office supply store located on Commerce Avenue near the newly-opened 105,000 sq.ft. Home Depot located at Spreckles Business Park near Manteca, CA.

 

Loehmann’s (718-409-2000) successfully reorganized while under Chapter 11 federal bankruptcy protection and now plans to embark on a growth strategy aimed at opening two units per year beginning in 2001. The wave of closings that accompanied the discount fashion stores’ bankruptcy filing reduced its number of stores from 69 to its current 44. No future closings are planned.

 

Blockbuster Video (770-858-5500/5542) is slated to open an anchor store at a planned 10,560 sq.ft. strip center located off of Highway 50 in O’Fallon, IL. The 4,000 sq.ft. store would sit immediately east of Steak n’ Shake along Highway 50.

Cato (704-554-8510) opened 13 stores and relocated seven others during the month of October 2000. The company has opened a total of 34 stores so far this year, while closing nine and relocating 22 others.

 

Safeway Inc. (925-467-3000) plans to have opened 75 to 80 stores by year’s end. During the first nine months of the year, the company opened a total of 45 stores while closing 24 locations.

 

Fuzio Universal Pasta (510-768-1411) is seeking experienced multi-unit operators for franchise opportunities. The company plans to grow its concept moderately in select markets. The company, which currently operates seven units, envisions in-line spaces of 2,500 sq.ft. to 4,500 sq.ft. for its franchise units.

 

Bahama Breeze (407-245-4000) is currently constructing seven units which, when completed, will grow the total number of unitss in the company by 50% from the current 14 to a total of 21 locations. Each unit is slated for a 2001 opening.

 

Culvers Frozen Custard (608-643-7980) plans to open 10 units during the remainder of 2000. Long-range plans call for opening as many as 86 units by the conclusion of 2002, which would bring the company’s total store count to 200 if the maximum number of openings were to occur.

 

Noble Romans (317-634-3377) has plans to open 200 franchise restaurants in the coming months, and remains in negotiations with other potential franchisees to open additional units throughout the U.S. and Canada.

 

The Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Company (A&P) (201-573-9700) opened 11 units during the second quarter of its fiscal year 2000. An additional 14 stores were expanded and/or remodeled, leaving the company with a total of 750 stores across the chain.

 

Home Depot (770-433-8211) plans to open a 108,360 sq.ft. home improvement and garden center located at the intersection of U.S. Highway 27 and New Life Way Road in Searing, FL. A May 2001 opening is slated. Steak n’ Shake and Burger King will also be locating at the site as pad users.

 

Dollar Zone (717-699-4325) plans to open a 6,000 sq.ft. unit located in York County, PA during the early part of 2001. The company operates another location in nearby Wyoming, PA which opened during July 2000.

 

Walgreens (847-940-2500) broke ground on a 14,500 sq.ft. unit situated on a 1.3-acre parcel located at the northwest corner of Ridge and Wentworth in Lansing, IL during September 2000. A January 2001 opening is planned.

 

Rent-A-Center (972-801-1200) plans to open 25 to 30 units during the last quarter of 2000. The company, which operates over 2,100 stores in all 50 states, plans to add 200 to 300 stores during the coming year.

 

Kroger (540-563-3652) plans to open a 59,346 sq.ft., six-acre supermarket located at the intersection of Battlefield Boulevard and Knells Ridge Boulevard in Chesapeake, VA. The site plan includes an additional 4.6-acre parcel to be developed for a retail use.

 

WinCo Foods (208-377-0110) has delayed its plans to open a 90,000 sq.ft. supermarket in a spaces formerly housing a 115,000 sq.ft. Kmart located on Barnet Road in Medford, ID until a few weeks after the new year. Originally, the company had hoped to open the store during Fall 2000. The remaining 25,000 sq.ft. of the former Kmart space will be leased to other retailers.

 

The Right Start (818-707-7100) opened a 2,448 sq.ft. store specializing in children’s developmental products located on Rice Boulevard in Houston, TX, its fourth in the metropolitan area.

 

Kinkead’s (202-296-7700) will open a 10,000 sq.ft. restaurant in a pad site currently occupied by Primi Piati at Fairfax Square located on Leesburg Pike in Arlington, VA. A Summer 2001 opening is planned.

Old Navy (800-653-6289) plans to open a 24,631 sq.ft. clothing store at Brandywine Town Center located at the intersection of Naamans Road and U.S. Highway 202 in northern DE during Spring 2001. Anchors include Lowe’s, Target, Dick’s Sporting Goods, Bed Bath & Beyond and Regal Cinemas. Other tenants include Michael’s Arts & Crafts.

 

Gateway Country (800-846-4208) plans to open a 4,000 sq.ft. computer store located on Maple Grove Avenue in Duluth, MN. Best Buy operates nearby.

 

BJ’s Wholesale Club (508-651-6100) is planning to open 38 to 40 gas stations by the end of its fiscal year 2000. Currently the company operates 31 gas stations.

 

Costco (425-313-8203) remains on schedule to open as many as 14 wholesale warehouses during the final two months of 2000. Included in the openings will be two relocations of existing warehouses to larger and better-located facilities.

 

WalMart Stores, Inc. (501-273-4000) plans to open three locations in Broward County, FL. A 230,233 sq.ft. store in Pompano Beach, FL includes retail, grocery and a tire and lube shop, while two Coral Springs, FL locations will be just over 200,000 sq.ft. each. The company will open a 220,000 sq.ft. supercenter in Spartanburg, SC despite local concern over an access road that cuts through a residential area. The store will replace a store located less than two-thirds of a mile away. A 210,000 sq.ft. store will open at Harbour View Station East in Suffolk, VA. A restaurant and entertainment center, featuring a 16-screen movie theater will also be included in the development off of Interstate 664. It will be the second WalMart in Suffolk. A 184,400 sq.ft. store will open in Post Falls, ID. The company plans to open 40 discount stores and 170 to 180 Supercenters in the fiscal year beginning February 1, 2001. They will double their Neighborhood Market concept, adding 15 to 20 stores in fiscal 2001. The Sam’s Club division will open 40 to 50 clubs and renovate around 100 stores. The company operates over 3,000 stores in the US.

 

P.F. Chang’s China Bistro (602-957-8986) opened seven restaurants, five of which are located in new markets. The White Plains, NY; Nashville, TN; Rookwood, OH; Beachwood, OH; and Roseville, CA markets have been entered by the company in the third quarter. Woodland Hills, CA and Broomfield, CO have added stores. The company also opened its first Pei Wei Asian Diner in Chandler, AZ. Chang’s expansion plans call for 13 to 14 new restaurants in 2001 including the sophisticated bistro atmosphere and the take-out friendly diner concepts.

Albertsons, Inc. (817-568-3858) opened a 61,000 sq.ft. grocery "concept" store in East Manatee, FL. The upscale store has a Starbucks Coffee bar and a dry cleaning drop-off counter. The location at University Parkway and Lockwood Ridge Road is the company’s third unit in Manatee County and plans call for two more openings by 2002. A store at Old Tampa Road and US Route 301 North will open in September 2001, with a Palmetto location to open in 2002. The company will open a store in Port Charlotte, FL in time for holiday shopping in 2001. They have acquired a nine-acre lot on the northwest corner of Peachland and Veterans Boulevards for a 60,000 sq.ft. store with a gas plaza. The company has acquired the Service Merchandise building at Southbrook Mall in Whitehaven, TN and will build a Seessel’s store. The 62,000 sq.ft. store is expected to be completed in nine months and will replace the current store at the opposite end of the mall.

 

Dooley’s Bagels and Deli (502-459-9598) opened a downtown store at the King Cole building in Indianapolis, IN. The building at the corner of Meridian and Washington streets is the company’s first location in a large market. Dooley’s has two other locations in IN (Columbus and New Albany) and is looking to expand in the suburbs of Indianapolis.

 

Silver Diner (301-770-4187) opened its mall prototype at Lakeforest Mall in Gaithersburg, MD. The freestanding model has been up in Virginia Beach, VA since June. The chain which combines diner heritage and modern aesthetics operates 13 units in VA, DC, MD and PA. The company anticipates opening three company-owned restaurants by the end of 2001.

 

Whole Foods Market, Inc. (713-661-7753) opened a store in Cherry Creek, CO. An Overland Park, KS store will open at the North Regency Park Shopping Center in the former Glenwood Theater site along with a Bob Evans store. The super market chain plans to open or acquire 15 to 20 stores in 2001. Expansion plans are underway in AZ, CA, CO, DC, FL, IL, KS, MD, MA, MO, NJ, NY, PA, RI and TX. The 20-year old chain of natural foods supermarkets operates 117 stores in 22 states and DC.

 

Applebee’s International, Inc. (913-967-4000) will open a unit at Rochester Marketplace in Rochester, MN. The company will open at least 115 restaurants this year marking the eighth consecutive year that the company has opened over 100 units. Applebee’s plans to open 25 to 26 locations in 2001. The company has 1,253 stores in 49 states in its system operating under the name Applebee’s Neighborhood Grill and Bar.

 

Walgreen Co. (847-940-2500) will open a store on the corner of North Fairfield and Kemp Roads in Beavercreek, OH. The company plans to open 500 stores this year after announcing record earnings and sales for fiscal 2000. The company will open a store at N. Main Street and Winchester Drive in High Point, NC. The 15,210 sq.ft. store is the first of five planned in the Greensboro area.

 

Osco Corporation (708-786-3087) will open a new store in the former Courson’s Grocery & Hardware building in Danville, IL. The site on the northwest corner of Fairchild and Gilbert streets is diagonally across the street from an existing Jewel-Osco store, continuing the company’s trend to replace the combined stores with freestanding Osco stores in downstate IL. The 14,600 sq.ft. store will feature one-hour photo service, a pharmacy and a liquor store.

 

Winn-Dixie Store, Inc. (904-783-5000) will open a SaveRite Grocery Warehouse on Edgewood Avenue in West Jacksonville, FL. The move is part of a company plan to refurbish about 650 of its 1,079 stores to improve the stores’ appeal. The company has opened or acquired 34 locations and closed 143 sites during this year. Winn-Dixie operates in 14 states and the Bahamas.

 

Riscky’s (817-624-6114) will open a barbecue restaurant at Wellington Square Shopping Center in Fort Worth, TX. It will be the 10th location for the restaurant chain.

 

Buca di Beppo (949-833-7590) plans to follow this year’s 17 store expansion with 17 more in fiscal 2001. The restaurant chain expects all of those to open in the first three quarters of the year.

Buca, Inc. reported a revenue increase of 85% for the first nine months of 2000 over those of 1999.

 

Diedrich Coffee, Inc. (949-260-1600) plans to open three Diedrich stores in Orange County, CA and two kiosks in the Portland, OR airport during fiscal 2001. The company looks for high-traffic areas between the target customers’ home and office, requiring between 1,200 sq.ft. and 1,800 sq.ft. with an exterior patio for seating. Prime locations are considered in strip centers or projects in neighborhood settings.

 

Ruby Tuesday, Inc. (865-379-5700) plans to open 64 restaurants in the remainder of fiscal 2001. Company-owned stores would account for 35 of those openings. The company operates 414 units trading as Ruby Tuesday, Tia’s Tex-Mex and American Cafe. The company will have 151 franchise agreements at the end of fiscal 2001.

 

Dillard’s (501-376-5200) will open a store at the Memorial City Mall in Houston, TX during late 2002. The department store will join a 300,000 sq.ft. Foley’s and Lord & Taylor as new tenants in the development located on Katy Freeway at Gessner. The new store will mean the closing of Dillard’s location at Town & Country. Leaving the project with only two anchors, Nieman Marcus and J.C. Penney.

Regis Corporation (952-947-7777) opened two Regis Signature Salons offering a more luxurious salon experience in upscale centers. Flatiron Crossing in Denver, CO and City Center Mall in Columbus, OH house the first of the signature salons that offer beauty services from hair care to facials and massages. Four to seven signature salons will open in 2001. The Regis Corporation operates over 5,800 salons.

 

Target Corportion (612-304-6073) will open a store at Manchester Village in Rock Hill, SC. The company purchased 12.84 acres in the area being developed into 300,000 sq.ft. of retail space by Tony Berry and JMT Land Development. Target has more than 900 stores in 44 states including stores in Pineville, NC; Charlotte, NC and Columbia, SC. The company will open its first Super Target in South FL next July at Universal Plaza in Lauderhill, FL. The 184,000 sq.ft. store will have an Archer Farms grocery store, Starbucks Coffee shop, portrait studio, one-hour photo lab and either a Taco Bell or Pizza Hut restaurant along with the company’s standard merchandise mix. Most of the existing center will be torn down for the new store. The company has announced plans to ramp up its expansion, opening 14 Super Targets this year. Locations in both Miami-Dade and Palm Beach counties are being sought for expansion. Another Super Target will open at Jellico Towne Crossing in Southlake, TX. The 182,000 sq.ft. store will the seventh opened in North TX this year (Hurst, Watagua, Plano, Frisco, Fort Worth and North Dallas). A Super Target will open at Rochester Marketplace in Rochester, MN in July 2001. The 174,000 sq.ft. store joins Home Depot and Staples in the new center. The opening will mean the closing of the Target at Maplewood Square Shopping Center. A 126,000 sq.ft. store will open in Silverthorne, CO. The company will be the first "big box" in the town known for its factory outlet stores.

 

Harris Teeter (704-844-3100) will open at 720 Commerce Dr. in Decatur, GA with an express version of their usually cavernous stores. The store will open in the former A&P site. The smaller stores will focus on pre-made food items but will also stock core items. Kroger and Publix are planning similar scaled down stores but locations have not been announced.

 

Kmart (248-643-1000) will open their 10th store in the South Hampton Roads area on Battlefield Boulevard and Oak Grove Road in Chesapeake, VA. The Super Kmart will feature 165,240 sq.ft. of space. Kmart operates 55 stores in VA and 2,164 nationwide.

 

Sonic Corporation (405-280-7654) opened 174 new drive-ins in fiscal 2000 raising their total to over 2,200 units nationwide. Started as a hamburger and rootbeer stand, the company plans to open an additional 190 to 200 locations in fiscal 2001.

 

Price Chopper (816-358-6511) will open at Mohawk Mall in Niskayuna, NY. The 73,350 sq.ft. grocery store will be the first new tenant in the center that is undergoing a full renovation. They will join holdover tenants Marshall’s, Rex TV & Appliances and Media Play in the big-box development that will emerge from the formerly enclosed structure.

 

Panera Bread Company (314-918-7779) opened two stores in CO, the company’s westernmost expansion to date. The store in Aurora, CO is the first of 40 planned in the Denver area by Ken Rosenthal who was the original founder of the company in 1987 as the Saint Louis Bread Co. Rosenthal has opened 16 stores in OH before focusing on the Denver market. The other opening was spearheaded by David Postle in Boulder, CO. Postle plans 10 store openings in the Boulder, CO area and parts of WY.

 

CVS (401-765-1500) had a proposal rejected for a store and office building in the Colonial town neighborhood of Orlando, FL by the city’s planning board. The proposed 11,950 sq.ft. building did not meet the dictated size requirements.

 

Outback Steakhouse, Inc. (813-282-1225) is developing a restaurant chain concept with musician Jimmy Buffett, called Cheeseburger in Paradise. The stores will specialize in cheeseburgers and some island food. No locations have been announced but a management team is being assembled for the concept in Tampa, FL.

 

Dress Barn, Inc. (914-369-4500) has gained 15 stores in fiscal 2000, operating 689 stores under the Dress Barn and Dress Barn Woman names. The company plans to open combo stores (featuring both lines of merchandise) and to close its under performing locations. Fiscal 2001 plans call for opening 60 additional stores while remodeling 15 single-format stores into combos.

 

Home Depot, Inc. (770-433-8211) will open several stores in two divisions to bring their unit total to over 1,050. A 116,000 sq.ft. store will open on a 19-acre site in the west Chicago suburb of Bartlett, IL located on the southwest corner of Route 59 and Stearns Road. A store at 144th Street and West Maple Rd in Omaha, NE will lead to between two and five more in the area. The 117,000 sq.ft. store is the first in the market where Payless Cashways and Sutherlands have just closed. Two other locations (72nd St. and Ames Avenue; at Lake Manawa Power Center in Council Bluffs) have been finalized to open late next summer. A 110,000 sq.ft. store will open in a former Builders Square site in Amarillo, TX. The location will be the store’s 100th in TX. Four stores will open in the Dayton, OH area. A 118,000 sq.ft. store in a former Lazarus location at the Salem Mall in Trotwood, OH will open in the second half of next year. Locations on Mall Woods Drive in Miamisburg, Wilmington Pike in Bellbrook and Colonel Glenn Highway in Beavercreek are also being constructed. An Expo Design Center, selling higher-end items, will open in the Buckhead section of Atlanta. The 105,000 sq.ft. store will be in the former Sam’s Club site near the Lindbergh MARTA station and opens next spring. The store will be the third Expo Center in Atlanta. The company operates 20 Expo Design Centers nationwide with over 150 more planned in the next several years.

 

Bed, Bath & Beyond (908-688-0888) will open its third Westchester County location on Central Park Avenue in Yonkers, NY. The site is adjacent to Tower Records and just south of a new Kohl’s store. The store will open in spring 2002.

 

ShopKo Stores, Inc. (920-497-2211) will open three stores in the Milwaukee, WI area. The company is planning new locations in the Loomis Center in Milwuakee, in Oak Creek, WI and in Germantown, WI. The company operates 390 stores in 22 states primarily in the Midwest, Western Mountain and Pacific Northwest.

 

Circuit City Stores, Inc. (804-527-4000) will remodel 140 stores in fiscal 2001. The electronics retailer will open 25 stores reflecting a new design and 10 to 15 stores will be relocated.

 

Charming Shoppes, Inc. (215-638-6909) will open 106 stores this calendar year and 140 stores in 2001. The company operates 1,754 stores in 48 states under the names Fashion Bug, Catherine’s Plus Sizes, Added Dimensions and The Answer. The company plans to open 1,000 more in the next five years citing favorable trends in the women’s large-size apparel segment.

 

Barnes & Noble Company (212-633-3300) will open at Columbia Mall in Columbia, MO. The bookseller plans to open a 25,000 sq.ft. store on the site of the former Mall 4 Theater.

 

Linens ‘n Things, Inc. (973-778-1300) will open 15 North American stores in the fourth quarter of 2000. The company opened 40 locations year to date, while closing three stores. US openings will be in Kansas City, MO; Irving, TX; Cincinnati, OH; Marin City, CA; Middletown, NY; Lincoln, NE; Boardman, OH; Livonia, MI; Santa Fe, NM; Meriden, CT; Frisco, TX; Vallejo, CA and Gurnee, IL. The company will open Canadian locations in Mississauga, ONT and Edmonton, AB. Linens ‘n Things operates 267 stores in 40 states and two Canadian provinces.

 

Wayfield Foods (770-941-9030) opened a store at a former A&P site at 3599 Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive in Atlanta, GA. The regional independent grocer may look to expand its 11-store chain by moving into closed Winn-Dixie locations. The company is the area’s 10th largest grocer with 1% market share.

 

Haverty Furniture (404-443-2900) will open eight stores in the South in the next year. The furniture retailer plans to open four units in TX, one in Charlotte, NC and Fort Walton Beach, FL, and two stores in southwest FL. Haverty operates 102 stores nationwide.

 

Apple Computers (408-996-1010) may open stores in five to 10 large markets as a showcase for their hardware systems. The company says the stores will probably act as custom order centers with the products being shipped to the customer’s home from a central location. The company has cooperated with retailers such as CompUSA and Circuit City to open outlets within their stores that feature Apple products, but has yet to open a stand-alone store. Gateway Corporation, a direct competitor of Apple, has opened 360 stand-alone stores and 800 cooperative outlets since entering on-site retailing in 1996. Gateway has announced plans to open 100 stores and 1,000 outlets every year.

 

Payless Cashways, Inc. (816-347-6630) will spend $6 million on 10 to 15 store remodels and new stores in the fourth quarter of 2000. The company has closed only three locations in 2000, compared to 13 closures in the first three quarters of 1999.

 

Discount Auto Parts, Inc. (863-687-9226) opened 12 new stores in the first quarter of fiscal 2001 while closing two stores. The chain of automotive replacement part stores plans to open 40 new stores in fiscal 2001. The company operates 653 units in FL, GA, MS, AL, LA and SC.

 

Lowe’s Companies, Inc. (336-658-4000) will open a store at Winchester at Hacks Cross in Memphis, TN. The home improvemnet chain will complete the 115,000 sq.ft. store for a spring opening. Locations in Bartlett, TN (US 64 near Wolfchase Galleria) and Cordova, TN (Germantown Parkway, north of the Wolf River) are in the governmental approval stage.

 

Shaw’s (508-894-7000) will open a store in Providence, RI. The company operates 157 stores in New England, with 13 in RI.
