Supermarkets Expanding Nationwide


Henry’s Marketplace, a subsidiary of Wild Oats, operates 17 locations in CA. The specialty supermarkets occupy spaces of approximately 23,000 sq.ft. in freestanding locations and strip centers. Plans call for at least six openings during the coming 18 months. Expansion will take place in northern and southern CA. Demographic requirements include a population of 50,000 residing within three miles earning above average incomes for that area. The company describes its customer as educated with middle to upper incomes. Markets having seniors with disposable income is a plus.

Top’s Markets, Inc. trades as Wilson Farms, Inc. at 206 locations in central, northern and western NY. The neighborhood convenience stores, some of which pump gas, occupy spaces of 2,500 sq.ft. to 6,000 sq.ft. in freestanding locations and strip centers. The company prefers to purchase, and requires a land area of 10 to 12 acres for freestanding sites. Demographic requirements include a population of 100,000 residing within five miles. Preferred co-tenants include Target, Home Depot and Lowes.
