Who’s Opening & Where


Levi’s/Dockers Outlet by Designs (781-444-7222) opened four stores and remodeled six in the first six months of fiscal 2001. One opening and five refurbishings are planned for the second half of the year. Designs Stores operates 105 units in 25 states.

 

Home Depot (770-433-8211) plans to open a 108,000 sq.ft. store and 27,000 sq.ft. nursery at the site of the former Schlage Lock Factory in San Jose, CA. The board of supervisors of San Mateo County has yet to approve the plans. The company has set early 2002 as the target for opening in Springfield, OR. A 100,000 sq.ft. plus store has been planned for 28th Street and Marcola Road. The company will open an Expo Design Center at the site of a former Home Quarters Warehouse in Lenexa, KS. The opening is scheduled for 2002 and will be the 22nd unit for the concept.

 

Kroger (513-762-4000) will open a 63,000 sq.ft. store on the site of the former Zayre department store at Linwood Square in Indianapolis, IN. The store will replace the older unit at the other end of the center. The company will reopen the unit on Piedmont Avenue in Buckhead, GA in February and plans to open four stores in the Atlanta market during 2001.

 

Cheesecake Factory, Inc. (818-871-3000) opened a store in West Palm Beach, FL, the company’s 38th unit. Four stores are currently under construction with ten additional units planned in fiscal 2001.

 

Urban Outfitters, Inc. (215-564-2313) opened three stores under its Urban Outfitters brand and three units under the Anthropologie name. The company plans six to eight openings in the remainder of the fiscal year.

 

Nordstrom, Inc. (206-628-2111) opened a store at The Town Center at Boca Raton in Boca Raton, FL. The 193,000 sq.ft. unit is its first store in FL and the 77th full-line store worldwide. Three more FL openings are planned for Tampa, FL; Coral Gables, FL and Orlando, FL by 2003.

 

Darden Restaurants, Inc. (407-245-4000) plans to open 36 units in the coming year along with remodeling 150 stores. The casual dining chain will open 15 Olive Garden Italian Restaurant units and remodel 120 locations. Eight Red Lobster stores will open with 33 being remodeled, while the company will open 12 Bahama Breeze units. Smokey Bones BBQ will open a unit in Albany, NY, the new concept’s fourth location.

 

Best Buy, Inc. (612-995-7049) will open two stores in the Spokane, WA market spring 2001. The 45,000 sq.ft. stores will open at Market Pointe II across from Spokane Valley Mall and at Northpointe on the North Side.

Ross Dress for Less (510-505-4400) will open at Garden Valley Shopping Center in Roseburg, WA. The 35,000 sq.ft. store is located on the site of the former Emporium store.

 

Family Dollar Stores (704-847-6961) plans to open 500 units over the next fiscal year. The company opened 406 units in fiscal 2000. The discount retail chain operates 3,737 stores in 39 states.

 

Sonic, Inc. (405-280-7654) will open four franchises in the Augusta, GA market in the coming 18 months. Rick McMurtrey will operate the units located at Publix Shopping Center on Washington Road, Martintown Plaza in North Augusta, Wheeler Road and Interstate 20 and Evans to Locks and Fury’s Ferry Roads. The company will open a unit at Atlantic and Millbrook Avenues in Raleigh, NC. Eight to 10 more openings in the market are expected in the next five years.

 

Winn-Dixie (904-783-5000) has abandoned plans to open a store in LaVilla, FL. The company has chosen to renovate its existing 27,900 sq.ft. store at 777 Market Street.

 

Staples, Inc. (508-253-5000) will open a store at Waterbury Crossing Plaza in Waterbury, CT. The plaza is anchored by Home Depot, Petsmart and The Sports Authority. The 23,900 sq.ft. unit will be located on the site of the former Connecticut Concrete Construction, Inc. It will be the company’s 31st store in CT. Staples plans to open 170 units in fiscal 2001.

 

International House of Pancakes (818-240-6055) is looking to open a store in Twin Falls, ID. The company has locations in Couer d’Alene, ID and Idaho Falls, ID. The chain operates more than 900 units worldwide.

 

P.C. Richards (631-843-4300) will open a 25,000 sq.ft. store at Sunrise Highway in Bay Shore, NY. The electronics retailer operates more than 40 stores in the tri-state area.

 

Recreational Equipment, Inc. (800-999-4REI) opened a store at Corte Madera Town Center in Marin County, CA. The center is anchored by Safeway, Pier One Imports, Stroud’s and The Good Guys. The 22,000 sq.ft. unit is the company’s fifth in the region. Openings are planned in Fremont, CA and Kennewick, WA to bring REI’s store total to 60.

 

The Wet Seal, Inc. (949-583-9029) opened 34 stores this fiscal year. The specialty retailer operates 568 stores in 42 states under the trade names Contempo Casuals, Wet Seal, Arden B. and Limbo Lounge. The company plans two more stores this year and will close 22 locations at the end of the fiscal 2000. The company has closed 14 stores this year.

Kenneth Cole (212-265-1500) opened a flagship store at Rockefeller Center in New York. The 17,000 sq.ft. unit is the company’s largest store to date. The clothing and shoe designer also has stores in Seattle and Chicago.

 

Happy Feet Plus (727-538-1111) will open two FL stores by the end of the year to raise their total units to 12. The chain is looking to expand to Sarasota and Bradenton.

 

Krystal Co. (423-757-1550) has signed two franchise agreements to bring more units to AL and TN. Golden Bird Enterprises, LLC will open eight units in the Birmingham, AL market and BJKF, LLC will open seven stores in Nashville, TN. The commitments are over the next three and a half years.

 

Cosi (212-653-1600) opened 13 units this year and plans five more by January 1. The cafe-bar chain which also trades as Xando Cosi is focusing on filling in the Chicago and core East Coast markets. Detroit, MI and the Minneapolis/St. Paul, MN markets are also being targeted. The 48-unit chain expects to open 25 locations in 2001.

 

Qdoba Mexican Grill (303-629-5000) has signed agreements with 17 developers to open at least 47 units in the next year. The 52-store chain operates fast-casual grills in CO, AZ, CA, GA, ID, IN, KS, IL, KY, MO, NC, SD, TX, UT, WA and WI. The chain has previously traded under the names Zuma and Z-Teca.

 

Genesco, Inc. (615-367-7000) will open four stores in the first quarter of 2001 for its new concept called Journeys Kidz. The stores will be aimed at the five to 12-year old market not served in its over 400 Journeys stores aimed at young adults. The company has 765 units nationwide also trading under the Johnston & Murphy and Jarman brands.

 

Kohl’s (262-703-7000) plans to open 30 stores in Southern CA by 2003. The company is negotiating to anchor centers under development in Riverside, Temecula, Chino, Corona and Redlands, CA. The strategy of large numbers of stores in one area was successful for the company when they opened 33 stores in a two-month time frame in the New York City area last spring. The next target is the Atlanta, GA market where 12 units are planned in 2001. The company plans to open 55 to 60 stores next year adding to their current total of 320 in 26 states.

 

Wal*Mart (501-273-4000) will open at Atlantic Station in Atlanta, GA during 2003 and will include a Sam’s Club unit. The company will open a store at East Capitol Drive in Milwaukee, WI next spring. The unit will be the first discount department store to serve the Eastside and North Shore areas of the city. Construction has begun for a spring 2001 opening of a store at Rhode Island Mall in Warwick, RI. The 136,000 sq.ft. store will be located on the former Filene’s site. Plans to open a supercenter at Garners Ferry Road in Columbia, SC have been approved by the Planning Commission. The new 205,000 sq.ft. store will be located across the street from an existing 130,000 sq.ft. unit that can not be expanded.

 

Crate & Barrel (847-272-2888) opened eight stores in 2000, and plans 11 more units in 2001. The housewares retailer operates 98 units nationwide.

 

Costco Wholesale Corporation (425-313-8100) will open next year near Citadel Mall in Charleston, SC. The 148,000 sq.ft. store will be the company’s first in SC. The company will open a store at Willowbrook Shopping Center in Houston, TX. The development will be the company’s first store in the market and will be coanchored by Great Indoors.

 

Abercrombie & Fitch Co. (614-577-6500) has a new retail concept that is ruffling the feathers of animal rights activists. Hollister & Co. uses live animals in their surfboard themed stores and has gotten complaints from People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals. The concepts’ first four stores have donated the macaws formerly housed by their registers to local zoos. The company is planning 20 for the concept in 2001.

 

Health Communication (954-360-0909 ext. 470) trading as Reading Etc. will open at City Place in West Palm Beach, FL. The retail store financed by the publisher of the Chicken Soup for the Soul series will be the second location. A third is planned for next fall in Aventura.

 

Whole Foods Market (512-477-4455) opened a store at East First Avenue and University Boulevard in Cherry Creek, CO. It is the natural food retailer’s second CO location (Boulder-1998) and a third is to open in Hilands Ranch. The company operates 118 units nationwide.

 

Johnny Rockets (305-253-8155) will open locations at Triangle Town Center in North Raleigh and at the Streets at Southpointe in Raleigh, NC. The units are part of a 10-store franchising deal with J.C. Faw.

 

Publix (863-688-1188) opened six stores in the last three quarters of 2000 and plans eight more in 2001 in the Atlanta, GA area. The grocer will have 93 units in the market after it converts the A&P sites that it purchased. The company has become the second largest chain in the area after opening its first GA unit in 1990.

 

Circuit City (804-527-4000) will open a 31,746 sq.ft. store at 501 Power Center in Myrtle Beach, SC. The company will join HomeGoods and Michael’s Arts & Crafts in the development, all of whom are new to the market.

 

Thomasville Furniture Industries (336-472-4000) will open seven units by year end and has added 83 units since 1997. The company operates 133 stores and plans call for more than 200 units by 2003.

 

Buffalo Wild Wings, Inc. (612-593-9943) opened units in Elyria, OH; Fargo, ND; Merrillvile, IN; Richmond, VA and Oviedo, FL. The chain opened 19 locations this year and operates 128 units in 21 states. 10 more units are to open by the end of 2001 including locations in Athens, OH; Fort Wayne, IN; Hamilton, OH; Champaign, IL; Las Vegas, NV; Plainfield, IN; Gastonia, NC and Austintown, OH. The company expects to open its 200th location in 2002.

 

J Jill Group Inc. (617-376-4300) opened 10 stores in the first three quarters of 2000 to bring the chain to 22 total units. The company has entered leases for four more stores to open in 2001. Plans call for 25 openings in fiscal 2001.

 

Rubio’s Restaurants Inc. (760-929-8226) opened 25 units this year in AZ, NV, CO, UT and CA. The chain operates 107 stores and plans 11 more openings in 2000.

 

Charlotte Russe Holding, Inc. (858-587-1500) opened stores in RI, OH, MA, TN, VA and CO this year to bring their total units to 136 in 21 states and Puerto Rico. The company operates under the names Charlotte Russe and Rampage and plans to open 40 stores in 2001. The company’s new concept Charlotte’s Room, focusing on accessories for 11 to 19 year old girls, will be expanded from three to 12 stores in 2001.

 

United Retail (201-845-0880) trading as Avenue opened 19 units in the third quarter of 2000. The women’s apparel retailer plans to open 60 stores in 2001. The company operates 513 units nationwide.

 

Lowe’s (336-658-4000) will open at Orchard Square in Augusta, GA. The 115,000 sq.ft. store will be located at the intersection of Bobby Jones Expressway and Peach Orchard Road. The company has 27 units in GA with four more under construction.

 

Pizzeria Uno (617-323-9200) will open a location in the summer of 2001 at Jefferson Pointe in Fort Wayne, IN. The company operates 160 units nationwide and this will be the third IN market (Indianapolis and Evansville). Biaggi’s, an upscale restaurant chain, will also open in the center.
