Whos Opening & WhereNational Supply & Hardware Corp. (630-990-6600), trading as National Ace Hardware, will open a store during May 2001 at Howell Avenue in Milwaukee, WI. The site was formerly an Osco drugstore. This is the companys third location in Milwaukee.
Lowes Home Improvement Warehouse (336-658-4000) will open a 150,000 sq.ft. store in Hopkins Crossing at Interstate 10 and Capital Circle Northwest, Tallahassee, FL by next fall. The store will include a 28,000 sq.ft. lawn and garden center, and will replace the smaller Lowes in the Wal*Mart Plaza on West Tennessee Street. As a result of its aggressive relocation program, Lowes expects to operate approximately 40 smaller format stores at the end of 2000 and plans to reduce that number to approximately 20 by the end of 2001. Expansion plans for 2001 call for 120 to 125 new stores, including 15 to 20 store relocations.
May Department Stores (314-342-6300), trading as Meir & Frank is considering sites in Gresham Station shopping center and/or The Shops at Tanasbourne in Gresham, OR. Other retailers in Gresham Station include Bed Bath & Beyond, Borders Books & Music, Cost Plus World Market and Old Navy.
Rock Hill Galleria in Rock Hill, SC expects to gain an American Eagle Outfitters (724-779-5259) with construction slated to begin in January and Manchester Village, also in Rock Hill, expects to gain a Target (612-304-6073) next year. This emerging commercial strip, between Manchester and the Galleria, will also see the construction of Northern Tool & Equipment Co., Staples, Chick-Fil-A and a Ruby Tuesday.
Paseo Nuevo, a center located on State Street in Santa Barbara, CA, is expecting to gain a BCBG (888-236-2224) and a Brookstone (603-577-8104) this spring. The center is anchored by Macys and Nordstrom.
Brown Shoe Company, Inc. (608-829-3668) trading as Famous Footwear expects to open 80 out of 100 total stores in fiscal 2001. The company is seeking sites of 8,000 sq.ft. to 12,000 sq.ft. for the new stores. During the first nine months of fiscal 2000, the company opened 73 stores, and closed 47 in under-performing locations. The chain is on track to have 929 stores in operation by year-end.
Silver Diner (301-770-4187) signed a lease for the companys fourteenth unit at the 300,000 sq.ft. Pentagon Row in Arlington, VA. The 4,400 sq.ft. unit, scheduled to open in mid-2001, will be the companys third new prototype unit. The company currently operates 13 restaurants in the Washington, D.C., Baltimore and Philadelphia metropolitan areas and in the Tidewater region of VA. The new prototype calls for freestanding, mall and urban locations.
CS Ventures LLC recently broke ground on its first Murray Bros. Caddyshack restaurant and flagship eatery. The golf-themed restaurant will be located between the Shops of World Golf Village and the Renaissance Resort Hotel near Jacksonville, FL. The 8,000 sq.ft. unit is scheduled to open next spring.
Specialty Sports Venture (303-755-3750), trading as Colorado Ski & Golf, recently opened its flagship store at 2650 S. Havana Street in Aurora, CO. The company owns two other stores, but this one is by far the largest at 62,000 sq.ft., at least three times the size of the original Colorado Ski & Golf Shop.
Goodys Family Cothing (865-966-2000) opened 27 stores, relocated ten stores and closed two stores fiscal year to date. For the balance of the fiscal year, the company expects to open five stores and relocate two stores. Goodys operates 312 stores in AL, AR, FL, GA, IL, IN, KY, LA, MS, MO, NC, OH, OK, SC, TN, TX, VA and WV.
Tricon Global Restaurants (972-338-7700) with over 30,000 restaurants around the world, in over 100 countries and territories, trades as KFC, Pizza Hut and Taco Bell. The conglomerate will open 1,350 restaurants including 850 internationally in 2001. Tricon will also effectively complete its refranchising strategy in 2001, with the sale of about 300 restaurants to franchisees.
Kohls Corporation (262-703-7000) operates 320 stores. In fiscal 2001, the company plans to open 55 to 60 stores, including approximately 34 in the first quarter of the year. Plans for the first quarter include entering the Atlanta market with 15 stores; continued expansion in the Northeast with the opening of four stores in the Hartford/New Haven, CT market; entry into Arkansas with three stores; and opening additional stores in existing Midwest and Mid-Atlantic markets.
Hot Topic, Inc. (626-839-4681) is forming a chain called Torrid, which will focus on plus-size juniors. In the second quarter of fiscal 2001, the first test store will open. It will be followed by five additional stores before the year is out. The stores will specialize in womens plus-sized apparel for consumers, 15 to 30 years old.
Oskar Huber, Inc.(215-355-4800), trading as Oskar Huber Furniture, has signed a 10-year lease for a 51,000 sq.ft. furniture store at the 113,000 sq.ft. Valley Fair Shopping Center in Devon, PA. The space was formerly occupied by Filenes Basement. Presently scheduled to open in the spring of 2001, it will be the fourth store for the family-owned and operated company.
Moto Photo, Inc. (937-854-6686) opened 11 stores in the first three quarters of 2000. The company has 444 units in the chain.
Blimpie International, Inc. (212-673-5900) opened 53 units in the fourth quarter of fiscal 2000. The sandwich chain also closed 53 units to remain at 1,990 stores worldwide.The company also opened three stores under the Smoothie Island Juice Bar brand and closed a New York City location trading as Maui Taco.
The Childrens Place (201-558-2547) opened 100 of a planned 108 units in 2000. Plans call for 120 stores to open in 2001 putting the childrens clothes retailer in the Los Angeles; San Diego; Phoenix and Las Vegas markets. The chain operates 392 stores in 42 states.
Jo-Ann Stores, Inc. (330-656-2600) plans three superstores for the fourth quarter of fiscal 2001. The company has opened 13 superstores and two smaller units already in fiscal 2001. The fabric retailer has also closed 19 smaller or underperforming units.
Damons Restaurants (614-442-7900) will open a location at Eisenhower Drive in Hanover, PA. The unit will be on the site of former Rex and Doc Klunk stores.
T.G.I. Fridays (800-FRIDAYS) will open at Valley View Boulevard in Roanoke, VA. Atlantic Coast Dining will operate the unit which is the first of the chain in the Roanoke Valley market. The location is site of the former Hatteras Seafood.
Kmart Corp. (248-643-1000) will open a store at 1245 N. Germantown Parkway in Memphis, TN. The 142,000 sq.ft. Super Kmart unit is one of 12 the company plans to open in 2001. The company operates 2,171 units worldwide, of those 106 are super Kmarts.
Bob Evans Farms, Inc. (614-491-2225) opened five units in second quarter fiscal 2001 and remains on pace for 30 new locations for all of fiscal 2001. The chain operates 447 units nationwide.
Cato Corp. (704-554-8510) trading under the names Cato and Its Fashion, opened 25 stores during third quarter of 2000 and plans to open 18 more in the fourth quarter. The company operates 847 stores in 22 states.
TJX Companies, Inc. (508-390-1000) trading as TJ Maxx, Marshalls, and Winners will open 77 units this year. The Marmaxx division, including TJ Maxx and Marshalls, is on track to open 60 stores in the US. Winners plans to open 17 locations across Canada. The company operates 1,466 units worldwide.
Freds Inc. (901-365-8880) opened seven stores in the third quarter of 2000 and plans to open 30 to 35 net for the year. The discount general merchandiser operates 341 stores throughout the US.
Office Depot (800-937-3600) is looking to open locations in FL, TX and CA as well as smaller markets where there is no office superstore. The company is evaluating over 300 stores with leases expiring in the coming three years and all stores built since 1998 are candidates for potential closings or relocation. |
