Whos Opening & WhereNew World Coffee-Manhattan Bagel Inc. (732-544-0155) opened a 1,700 sq.ft. franchise bagel store in York Ridge Shopping Center on South Tryon in Charlotte, NC. The center is anchored by Winn-Dixie. The franchisee, MAP Enterprise Group, plans to open additional franchise units in NC.
Bob Evans Farms, Inc. (614-491-2225), which met its company goal to open 26 stores during fiscal year 2000, plans to open 30 restaurants in the coming fiscal year. The company will also continue its aggressive remodeling activity.
Dairy Mart Convenience Stores, Inc. (330-923-0421) plans to open as many as 15 stores, some of which will pump gas, as well as remodeling existing store and gasoline locations in its fiscal year 2001.
BJs Wholesale Club (508-651-6063) plans to open ten to eleven stores, relocate one store and open fifteen to twenty gas stations at its existing sites in the coming months.
The Bon-Ton Stores (717-751-3254) plans one opening during 2000 and no more than one opening during 2001, as the company enters a period of expense-cutting and the focusing of energies on increasing productivity at existing department stores.
Family Steak Houses (904-249-4197) has signed a franchise agreement that calls for the opening of two restaurants annually in FL, and plans call for openings in St. Cloud, FL and Titusvillle, FL during 2000. Future openings are likely to be concentrated in Central and South FL.
Sonic Corp. (405-280-7654) is seeking additional locations in the Hampton Roads, VA market. The 2,000+ unit drive-in restaurant chain typically has units with 24 to 36 covered spaces where customers order over intercoms. As many as 12 company owned and franchise stores may open in Hampton Roads metropolitan area.
Sears (847-286-6254) plans to open a 90,000 sq.ft. store in a space formerly occupied by Wal*Mart at Monroe Mall in Monroe, NC. Other tenants at the mall include Belk, JC Penney and Peebles. With the signing of Sears the mall is 98% occupied. Rainbow Rentals, Inc. (330-533-5363) opened two stores in the Tidewater, VA area and plans to open three additional stores in the coming months resulting from its purchase and conversion of nine Zoom Rent To Own stores. Of the nine stores, the aforementioned five were located in the Tidewater area while the remaining four were located in the Richmond, VA area.
Zeros Mr. Submarine Inc. (561-627-9002) signed a franchising agreement with Design Outcomes, Inc. to enter the Jacksonville, FL market, and has additional plans to open four stores in northern VA by years end.
Dallas Gold & Silver Exchange (800-527-5307) plans to open its second jewelry store in SC, which will trade as the Charleston Gold & Silver Exchange. The 10,000 sq.ft. store will be located on Pinehollow Road fronting U.S. Highway 17 in Charleston, SC. The company specializes in liquidating merchandise for financially troubled jewelers, reselling items that are left over from closeouts. The company also operates a store in Mount Pleasant, SC and a 6,000 sq.ft. store in Dallas, TX. General Nutrition Company (GNC) (412-288-4600) has plans for large-scale expansion with the opening of 6,300 stores--company-owned, franchise and those inside Rite Aid pharmacies-- in the coming 36 months.
Borders Books & Music (734-477-1100) plans to open its second downtown Chicago location, a 30,100 sq.ft. store on State Street, in addition to an October opening of a 25,000 sq.ft. store located at the intersection of 91 Freeway and Weir Canyon Road in Yorba Linda, CA during October 2000. The company also has plans to open a 24,895 sq.ft. store at the Retail Shoppes at St. Vrain Center located on Hover Road in Longmont, CO. The shopping center is anchored by Kohls. A September 2000 opening is slated.
Wal*Mart (501-273-4000) received approval to open a 219,000 sq.ft. supercenter located on 33 acres in the Mohawk district of Springfield, OR. The company also received approval to lease a 105,000 sq.ft. building on site to a home improvement store as well as 6,000 sq.ft. to smaller tenants. The store will be Wal*Marts third in Lane County, OR, and the opening is contingent upon complicity with 67 provisions attached by the citys planning authority.
Barnes & Noble (212-633-3512) plans to open a 25,000 sq.ft. bookstore and coffee shop at the Coliseum Mall in Hampton, VA. A Fall 2001 opening is planned, and with the signing the mall becomes 91% leased.
Zany Brainy (610-278-7800) plans to open a 10,000 sq.ft. store at Boulevard Consumer Square located on Niagara Falls Boulevard in Amherst, NY. The opening marks the companys entry into the Buffalo, NY market. Recently, the company acquired more than 50 Noodle Kidoodle stores and has plans to convert them to Zany Brainy locations. The company will then operate a total of 163 stores.
Red Robin International (303-689-9600) plans to open 25 to 30 restaurants during 2000, mainly in the Southeast and Midwest, on the strength of a merger with the Snyder Group Co., the companys original franchisee. Arc Properties Inc. (973-249-1000) is currently constructing three Walgreens pharmacies in Passaic, NJ (13,905 sq.ft.), Brick, NJ (13,905 sq.ft.) and Union City, NJ (16,088 sq.ft. ). The company is actively seeking additional sites of one to three acres at signalized corners in densely populated areas throughout NJ.
Best Buy (612-995-7049) plans to open a 45,000 sq.ft. store on Douglas Boulevard in Douglasville, GA and another 45,000 sq.ft. store in Skokie, IL, both during late Fall 2000. The openings are part of a plan to add more than 50 locations nationwide during 2000.
1-800 Mattress opened its first unit in NJ on Route 46 in Saddlebrook in Bergen County. The previously over-the-phone-only mattress sales company, which opened its first stores in the Hudson Valley of NY three years ago, plans to open eight to 10 stores in NJ by years end including a second Bergen County store on River Street in Hackensack. Additionally, a 20,000 sq.ft. superstore is planned for Atlantic Avenue in Brooklyn, NY.
Rockaway Bedding (973-584-2299), a major competitor of 1-800 Mattress, plans to open approximately 15 stores in the Mid-Atlantic region by years end. The company has opened more than 100 stores in the region during the last five years.
Ben & Jerrys (802-846-1500) ice cream shop will open a unit in a 6,000 sq.ft. buildingco-tenanting with The Filling Station, a restaurant located on Holly Street in Columbia, SC. The building will also have space for an additional small retailer.
U.S. Factory Outlets (212-967-9872) plans to open its first location in AR during August 2000. The company is interested in opening additional units in AR, AZ, LA, MO and TX.
May Department Stores Company (314-342-6300) plans to open nine stores by years end including three Lord & Taylor stores, four Foleys stores, one Kaufmanns store and one Famous-Barr store. The company has already opened 14 stores under its various trade names during 2000. Systemwide, the company operates 422 department stores in 36 states and Washington, D.C.
