Victoria’s Secret (614-479-7000) has selected Walden Galleria in Cheektowaga, NY to roll out its prototype "world store" concept. The store will occupy 8,000 sq.ft. and the company plans as many as 900 openings over the coming few years.

 

JC Penney (922-431-1000) opened a catalog center this month located in Jerry’s IGA store on Round Barn Road in Champaign, IL. The company is closing its department store in Champaign during August.

 

Montgomery Ward (312-467-6241) is in negotiations to lease a 150,000 sq.ft. space at Six Flags Mall located in Arlington, TX. The space was formerly occupied by JC Penney, which vacated three years ago.

 

New York Burrito (602-503-3363) and Chili’s (214-980-9917) recently opened restaurants in Crossroads Shopping Center in Gulfport, MS. Additionally, construction has begun at the center on a TGI Friday’s unit and a Backyard Burger unit.

 

Krispy Kreme (336-725-2981) franchisees plan to open 12 to 15 locations in AR and OK, including four in Oklahoma City, three in Tulsa, three in Little Rock, and one each in Bentonville and Fort Smith.

 

Red Lobster (407-245-4000) and Bahama Breeze () have restaurants under construction at FlatIron Marketplace, a shopping center project located near FlatIron Crossing Mall in Broomfield, CO. Both restaurants are slated to open during Spring 2001. Bahama Breeze plans to open a total of five restaurants nationwide during this year.

 

Popeye’s Chicken and Biscuits (770-353-3148) plans to open a 2,500 sq.ft. freestanding unit on Newmarket Drive in Hampton, VA during September. The restaurant will be 400 sq.ft. larger than the unit the company operates at Langley Square Shopping Center on Mercury Boulevard nearby.

 

Taco Cabana (210-804-0990) closed its original eatery on Yale Avenue in Tulsa, OK and has replaced it with another unit a few miles north on Yale Avenue. The company plans to open a second location at the intersection of 71st Street and Lewis Avenue and a third unit in Broken Arrow, OK later this year.

 

Best Buy (612-995-7049) plans to open a store in Tukwila, WA to be located on Southcenter Parkway during the Fall. A second unit is planned for Northgate Way in Northgate, WA. The two 45,000 sq.ft. stores are the company’s first units to open in the Seattle area. A third store is planned for North Broadway Plaza in Chula Vista, CA, giving the company a total of three stores in the San Diego area. The company also signed a lease to open a 45,000 sq.ft. unit on Los Feliz Boulevard in Glendale, CA during the Fall. The openings are part of a planned 60-store expansion during 2000.

 

Wal*Mart (501-273-4000) is planning to open a supercenter unit in Twin Falls, ID pending approval from the city council. The city’s planning and zoning commission recommended denying Wal*Mart’s request to rezone the proposed site on the city’s north end. The company plans to open a unit at Southgate Plaza located near Florin Road and Highway 99 in Sacramento, CA. The company recently purchased a lounge on U.S. Highway 17 in Savannah, GA, where it plans to open a 219,000 sq.ft. supercenter, the largest in the region. The company plans to open a 140,000 sq.ft. store at the former site of an AutoNation store at Long Beach Towne Center, an 850,000 sq.ft. power center located in Long Beach, CA. The company also plans to open a 330,000 sq.ft. complex with 1,700 parking spaces in Springfield, OR. The company faces local opposition.

 

Quality Dining Inc. (219-243-6216), which operates a number of Burger King and Chili’s franchise restaurants, plans to open three to four Burger King restaurants and one Chili’s restaurant in the coming fiscal year.

 

Little General Store (304-253-9592) recently purchased the eight convenience stores operated by Boone Oil in Boone, Lincoln and Wyoming counties of WV. The purchase will expand the company’s presence in the region, and the company is planning to add additional units by either building new stores or buying smaller companies in the coming months.

 

Belk’s (704-357-1000) plans to renovate an existing unit and open five additional units in FL during the coming 12 months. The renovation is slated to be during January 2001 at a 200,000 sq.ft. store located at The Avenue mall in Jacksonville. The five new stores will open in Lake City, Spring Hill, Deland, Lady Lake and Winter Haven.

 

Culver’s (608-643-7980) opened its 103rd stores in Richmond, VA last month, and plans call for the company to double the number of stores it operates by 2002.

 

Hereford House (816-842-1080) plans to open a steakhouse at the Wakarusa Crossroads Centre, located southwest of Sixth Street and Wakarusa Drive in Lawrence, KS. An opening is planned during October.

 

Easter Seals Wisconsin Craftsman (414-449-4444) needs to relocate from its current 65,000 sq.ft. building located on North Milwaukee Street in Milwaukee, WI. The Pioneer Building is being sold, and the organization is seeking a suitable replacement space.

 

CVS (401-765-1500) remains on track to open more than 200 pharmacies in the Chicago, IL market by the end of 2001. The plan is designed to counter Walgreens dominance in the region. The latter company operates more than 325 stores with plans to open 100 additional units in the coming three years.

 

Zero’s Mr. Submarine (757-425-5745) is planning to expand into the Greenville, SC market with the opening of three units in the coming months. The first store opened on Woodruff Road earlier this month.

 

Circuit City (804-527-4000) and Linens ‘N’ Things () both plan to open stores at Highwoods Preserve, a 1.8 million sq.ft. mixed-use center located at the intersection of Bruce B. Downs Boulevard and Richmond Park Drive in Tampa, FL. The center is anchored by Muvico 20 Theaters.

 

Eateries, Inc. (405-705-5056) signed a multi-unit franchising agreement permitting Heartland Casual Concepts, LLC to open 10 Garfield’s restaurants in the Omaha and Lincoln, NE markets in the coming months. The first store will open in Omaha during the first quarter of 2001.

 

LA Fitness (949-509-2557) plans to open a 38,000 sq.ft. sport club on a site first earmarked for World Gym in Murrieta, CA. Construction is slated to be complete by February 2001. The company also has opened or has plans to open clubs in several other San Diego county cities including Encinitas, Vista, Escondido, Mira Mesa and Kearny Mesa.

 

Morgan Tire and Auto, Inc. (727-441-3727) plans to double the number of units it operates in the coming 18 months. The company presently operates 24 locations, and is planning an aggressive expansion in the Philadelphia, PA and Southern New Jersey markets. The first of the proposed openings are scheduled to take place within six months. However, the company recently acquired Tires Plus, and will eventually rename its Avellino Tire centers under that banner. The merger will give the company 540 units, and long-range plans call for the opening of 460 additional units by 2005.

 

Walgreens (847-940-2500) has received approval to open a 24-hour drug store located at the intersection of Abercorn Street and Victory Drive in Savannah, GA. Demographics show a population of 21,000 residing within one mile of the store.

 

Borders Books & Music (734-477-1100) plans to open a 22,960 sq.ft. store at the Viewmont Mall in Dickson City, PA. A November opening is scheduled. The company plans to open a 24,840 sq.ft. unit located at the St.Vrain Center in Longmont, CO. A September 2000 opening is planned. The company plans to open a 25,820 sq.ft. store at the Pearl Street Mall located in Boulder Co. A November 2000 opening is planned. The company also plans to open a 25,000 sq.ft. store located at the Union Landing Shopping Center in Union City, CA. A November 2000 opening is planned.

 

Costco (425-313-6360) is in negotiation to purchase a 160,000 sq.ft. property for the purpose of opening a 148,000 sq.ft. store to be located in Eden Prairie, MN. The property sits just east of Eden Prairie Mall. The company is also considering other sites in the area. The company also has purchased a 139,000 sq.ft. property at the Park Palace Plaza in St. Louis Park, MN, and construction on the building is slated for completion by the end of the year.
