Who's Openning & Where

Mansour’s (706-884-7305) will open a 65,000 sq.ft. department store in Augusta, GA, during August. The store, which will adjoin Goody’s Family Clothing and Regal Cinemas, will sell clothing, cosmetics and jewelry. The Augusta unit, on Agerton Lane and Robert C. Daniel Jr. Parkway, will be the company’s largest location in the chain. Mansour’s is expanding in second tier markets with populations of 200,000 to 400,000 in the trade area.

Lowe’s Home Improvement (336-658-4000) expects to open eight stores totaling nearly one million sq.ft. in the Houston TX area this year. Adding more fuel to the competition, Home Depot (770-433-8211) anticipates opening five stores comprising approximately 600,000 sq.ft. in the Houston, TX area this year.

Albertson’s (208-385-6200) will open five stores in the Houston, TX area this year. In related news, H-E-B (713-329-3004) will open four Houston, TX stores this year, going to a larger format than its Pantry prototype. Kroger (513-762-4000) plans to open four stores in Houston, TX this year. Whole Foods (713-661-7753) is expected to open two Houston, TX stores this year. Randalls (954-268-3638) will open at least one supermarket in Houston, TX this year.

Family Christian Stores (616-554-8700) is relocating to a 5,600 sq.ft. store at Augusta Exchange in Augusta GA, from the Augusta Mall. The 346-store chain, formerly known as Family Bookstores, is relocating because the new store will be double in size.

Belk Inc. (704-357-1000) will open eight stores in the Southeast this year, and expand or renovate 13 others. Opening of a store at Springdale Plaza in Camden, NC is set for May. In all, Belk will spend $80 million on new stores and renovations this year.

Metromedia Restaurant Group (972-588-5000) signed an agreement with SDG Restaurants, LLC, to open at least six Bennigan’s in the Cincinnati and Dayton, OH areas during the next seven years. In addition, SDG will assume operation of four existing Bennigan’s restaurants in Cincinnati and Dayton.

Goody’s Family Clothing (423-966-2000) plans to purchase 32 acres of land in Russellville, AR, for a 234,000 sq.ft. distribution center to be completed by Fall of this year. The facility will begin operation early next year and is intended to support new-store expansion in the Southwest and Midwest during the next four to six years.

Ruby Tuesday Inc. (334-665-6000) expects to open as many as 18 company-owned restaurants during the remainder of fiscal 2000. The company also expects franchisees to open as many as 12 units. The company expects to sell 41 restaurants to franchisees.

Kelsey’s International (905-842-5510) plans to add as many as 30 restaurants a year in the US and Canada. Kelsey’s currently operates 20 Montana’s Cookhouse Saloons, a casual dining restaurant with a Western lodge look, and 77 Kelsey’s. In addition, the company is a franchisee operating eight Outback Steakhouse restaurants.

Rainbow Rentals (330-533-5363) plans to add 13 stores this year. The company, which operates locations in MA MI, NY, OH, PA, RI, SC and TN, added nine new stores and 13 units through acquisition in 1999, putting its total number of stores at 92.

Morton’s Restaurant Group, Inc. (800-486-4791) plans to open five Morton’s of Chicago steakhouses in Denver, CO, Hartford, CT, Jacksonville, FL, Great Neck, NY and Vancouver, Canada in the near future.

Gerald Stevens, Inc. (954-713-5000) opened its first store under the Gerald Stevens brand name in Boca Raton, FL. The store, on North Federal Highway, offers fresh cut flowers, dried and silk flowers, plants, gift baskets and related merchandise. The floral-gift specialty company also plans to open Gerald Stevens stores in Atlanta, GA and Ft. Lauderdale, FL this month and in other markets later this year. It also will begin converting acquired stores in certain markets to the new format. While all 300 stores owned by the company in the United States and Canada will ultimately operate under the Gerald Stevens name, conversions will occur on a market-by-market basis.

Sears (847-286-2500) plans to open a 130,000 sq.ft. department store in Buffalo, NY. The store, slated for an August 2000 opening, will be the fifth in the Buffalo area.

Best Buy Co. (612-947-2388) plans to open a 45,000 sq.ft. store in Amherst, NY. The electronics store is slated to open just before the Christmas 2000 selling season.

Tops Markets, Inc. (607-336-4244) plans to open four Tops Friendly Market supermarkets during the coming year in NY and OH. The company also has plans for up to 20 Wilson Farms in the coming years.

Eckerd Drug (800-876-3075) plans to open six drug stores in the Buffalo, NY region in the coming year.

Good Times Restaurants Inc. (303-384-1480) and its existing franchisees plan to open as many as four restaurants in the Denver, CO region in the coming year.

Haverty Furniture (404-887-1911), which operates 103 furniture showrooms in 14 Southern and Central states, plans to open four stores in the markets it currently serves this year.

A.J. Wright (610-687-0807) which operates a chain of off-price apparel and home fashion stores, plans to open a 25,000 sq.ft. store at Cedarbrook Plaza Shopping Center in Wyncote, PA. The shopping center is anchored by Big Kmart and Toys ‘R Us. The store will be the company’s first in the Philadelphia area.

Barnes & Noble (212-633-3300) recently committed to opening a 25,000 sq.ft. store at The Waterfront Project in Pittsburgh, PA in the Fall of this year. Co-tenants at the project include Petco, Marshall’s, Bed, Bath & Beyond, Old Navy and Pier 1 Imports.
