Who’s Opening & Where

The Gap (650-952-4400) plans to open a 25,000 sq.ft. Old Navy store at Spring Creek Centre in Fayetteville, AR during Summer. The 593,133 sq.ft. project is anchored by a Wal*Mart Supercenter, Home Depot, Goody’s, TJ Maxx, Bed Bath & Beyond, Shoe Carnival and Factory Card Outlet.

 

Friendly Ice Cream Corp. (413-543-2400) plans to open a restaurant at a former Steak ‘n Ale location at Janaf Shopping Center in Norfolk, VA this month. The unit will be joining a Popeye’s Chicken & Biscuits restaurant that plans to open on an adjacent outparcel during Spring. The 941,558 sq.ft. project is anchored by Old Navy, TJ Maxx, OfficeMax, Circuit City, Marshalls, PetsMart and Sports Authority. Spaces are available for lease at sites formerly occupied by JC Penney Furniture Outlet, Home Quarters and Discovery Zone.

 

Yorkshire Global Restaurants (248-699-2000), which operates 1,000 A&W and Long John Silver’s restaurants, has set a goal of operating 2,500 restaurants by 2005. The company’s goal is to add 600 restaurants this year, representing a 20-year high for expansion by the chain. While admitting that its expansion plans are "overly optimistic," the company said that expansion would come from domestic growth in the traditional (freestanding restaurants) category and non-traditional (convenience and gas stores, airports, hospitals, etc.) area; through international expansion and co-branding with Long John Silver’s.

 

Target (612-304-6099) plans to open a 175,000 sq.ft. SuperTarget on a 15 acre site at the intersection of Texas 6 and US 59 in Sugar Land, TX during July 2001. The store will be part of a 43-acre Town Center Lakeside retail park. Target purchased the land from Sugarland Properties, who first started development at the site in 1978. However, the company held onto this corner parcel knowing it would become more valuable as more homes were built. The SuperTarget will be the first of eight in the Houston, TX market. Currently, the company operates 16 SuperTargets nationwide and is planning to open 16 more this year. Target also plans to open a 155,360 sq.ft. Target and garden center on 11.67 acres of a 17-acre lot formerly housing a Fedco department store in Cerritos, CA. This will be the second Target in Cerritos, the other being a 102,000 sq.ft. store.

 

Diedrich Coffee (949-260-1600) recently signed a franchise agreement with New England Coffeehouses LLP for the opening of 50 locations in CT, MA and NY. The units will be the chain’s first in the Northeastern region. Since November 1998, the company signed franchise deals for more than 470 coffeehouses nationwide, as part of the company’s national expansion plan to add 1,200 to 1,500 stores over the next five to seven years.

 

Wal*Mart Stores, Inc. (501-273-4000) recently opened a Supercenter at the former North Park Shopping center in Lexington, KY.

 

Home Depot (770-433-8211) recently opened a 99,000 sq.ft. Expo Design Center in North Richland Hills, TX. The Expo Design Center is Home Depot’s concept store brand, offering home decor items and services. This store becomes the chain’s 15th, with five in TX, and Home Depot plans to build 200 Expo Design Centers over the next six years. Home Depot also plans to open a traditional store in a recently-vacated Builder’s Square store in Racine, WI.

 

Pizza Inn (972-701-9955) plans to open six franchised locations in the Dallas/Forth Worth, TX area this month. These openings will bring the total number of Pizza Inns in the area to 53, with an additional 446 locations in the U.S. and 14 other countries. American Kiosk Corporation (561-627-9002), franchisor for Zero’s Mr. Submarine and Pizza Place, recently signed four Zero’s Subs franchises--two in SC and two in the Tampa, FL area. JKM Associates purchased the two SC franchises, bringing the total to five Zero’s Subs scheduled to open this year. Greg Bancroft purchased the two Tampa franchises, and plans to open one store in this year and one in 2001.

 

Huddle House (404-377-5700) signed an agreement with SHG LLC, the food and beverage division of Griffin Express, to develop 40 restaurants in the coming eight years in AR, MO, MS and TN. Five are expected to open this year.

 

Culver’s Frozen Custard Restaurants (608-643-7980 ) plans to open as many as 30 restaurants this year, putting its total number of stores above 120. Several of the openings will take place in the new markets of IN, MI, SD and ND. The company also plans to open up to six locations in the suburbs of Chicago this year. Growth opportunities in WI will also be pursued.

 

Publix Supermarkets (941-688-1188) plans to open a store at Town & Country Shopping Center in Palatka, FL this year.

 

Real Goods Trading Corporation (707-521-4400) is opening its sixth store in West Los Angeles, CA this month. The store is located adjacent to a Whole Foods Market and has a direct opening into the store from Whole Foods. Tractor Supply Company (615-366-4600), a rapidly growing retail farm and ranch store chain, plans to open as many as 45 new stores during its current fiscal year, five of which have already opened. The company is scouting FL, a new market.

 

Musicland Stores Corporation (612-931-8073) trades as Sam Goody, Suncoast Motion Picture Company, Media Play and On Cue, and plans to open as many as 70 stores this year. The new stores will reflect the company’s commitment to employing Web-based technologies in the operation of its stores. As of December 31, 1999, the company operated 1,345 stores across its four brands. The company opened 39 new stores in fiscal 1999 and closed forty stores, with a net increase in square footage of 3.4% from the same period a year ago.

 

Clark Retail Enterprises (901-751-2404), trading as Oh! Zone convenience stores, opened a store in Normal, IL. The store represents the company’s expansion into the "upscale" convenience store market and is divided into areas called "zones" such as the Fresh Zone, Value Zone and Bulk Zone, which represent different categories and product lines.

 

Cici’s Pizza (214-466-2040) recently opened the first of 15 locations planned for central IN in the next two years. The company operates approximately 350 stores in 17 states, primarily in the Southern region. Cici’s Pizza hopes to open at least fifty locations annually in the near future.

 

Burlington Coat Factory (609-387-7800) recently signed a deal with Wegman’s Food Markets, which trades as Chase-Pitkin, to occupy a vacant Chase-Pitkin store in Cheektowaga, NY. The new store effectively replaces the Burlington Coat Factory store in Niagara Falls’ Rainbow Center, which the company plans to close.

 

Eckerd Drug Stores (727-395-6000) plans to open four units in Bradenton, Davie and Nokomis, FL. The stores in Davie and Nokomis are scheduled to open next month, and the Bradenton store is slated to open in July. Additionally, the company has begun construction on three more stores in the same cities.

 

Brooks Pharmacy (401-825-3900) plans to open a 10,800 sq.ft. store in New Bedford, MA.

 

Buffalo Wild Wings Inc. (612-593-9943), trading as Buffalo Wild Wings, plans to open seven franchise restaurants by the end of the month in Kokomo, IN; Troy and Dayton, OH; Houston, TX; St. Clairsville, OH; Blacksburg, VA and Fargo ND. The company plans to open six additional franchises by June.

 

Recreational Equipment Inc., (253-395-3780) which operates 54 stores nationwide, is building its first overseas store in Tokyo, and considering replacing its Anchorage, AL store with a slightly larger one. The present store is about 32,000 sq.ft., while the new store would be 35,000 sq.ft.

 

McDonald’s (630-623-3000) plans to open a drive-through location in Lawrence, KS by the end of the year. The facility, operated by franchisees Dobsky & Associates, will be the fifth McDonald’s in Lawrence. The 1.18-acre sight is anchored by SuperTarget and stands south of Payless ShoeSource.

 

Dollar Tree Stores Inc., (757-321-5000) which operates 1,343 stores nationwide and recently acquired the Only $One chain of discount variety stores, plans to open as many as 235 stores this year. The openings may increase its square footage by as much as 25%. Up to half of that expansion will be in Dollar Tree’s larger store format, which averages 9,500 sq.ft. In addition, Dollar Tree plans to relocate or expand 100 existing stores in the coming year.

 

Best Buy (612-947-2867) plans to open four stores in Portland, Beaverton, Clackamas and Salem OR this Spring. Each store will occupy 45,000 sq.ft. The company plans to open at least 60 stores nationwide this year.

 

Borders Books and Music (734-477-1100) plans to open four stores in July of this year in Atlanta, GA at Midtown Place, Jensen Beach, FL at Treasure Coast Mall, Houston, TX at Houston Centre and Harrisburg, PA at the Paxton Town Centre. The stores range in size from 23,000 sq.ft. to 32,000 sq.ft.
