Nordstrom Inc. (206-373-3035) plans to open a 39,000 sq.ft. Nordstrom Rack store at the Shops at Oakbrook Place located in Oakbrook, IL during October 2000. Other retailers at the center include Old Navy, Designer Shoe Warehouse, TJ Maxx and Zany Brainy. The company also plans to open a 144,000 sq.ft. Nordstrom store at Short Pump Town Center, a 1.1 million sq.ft. project in Henrico Country, VA anchored by Dillards, Lord & Taylor and Hechts during Fall 2002.
Borders Books and Music (734-477-1100) plans to open a 25,000 sq.ft. store at the Broadstone Plaza in Folsom, CA during October 2000. The company plans to open a 24,000 sq.ft. store at The Shops at Spanish Village in Dallas, TX during July 2000. The company also has plans to open a 25,000 sq.ft. store at St. Charles at the Main Street Commons Shopping Center in St. Charles, IL. An October 2000 opening is planned. The company has plans for more than 50 openings nationwide and internationally during 2000.
Talbots, Inc. (781-749-7600) plans to open a 4,200 sq.ft. store at the northeast corner of Seventh and Vermont in Lawrence, KS during February of 2001. The store will be the companys first in the Lawrence area. The company has plans to open a total of 40 stores this year.
Wal*Mart (501-273-4000) plans to open a 220,000 sq.ft. supercenter on a 23-acre parcel at Fox Mill Centre located at the intersection of Route 17 and Business Route 17 in Gloucester, VA. The site plan calls for more than 1,100 parking spaces. A Spring 2001 opening is planned. The company plans to open a 204,000 sq.ft. superstore located off of Interstate 75 at exit 218 in Henry County, GA during 2001. The company is planning to open a 107,000 sq.ft. store near the Casa Grande Ruins in Coolidge, AZ. The company will also open a 90,000 sq.ft. store in Bristol, United Kingdom in May. Although the giant U.S. department store retailer acquired Asda, a British grocer, last summer and has operated under the Asda banner due to its high name recognition, the Bristol site will mark the first UK location operated as Wal-Mart. The company plans to open two more Wal*Mart units in the UK by the end of this year and an additional ten next year. All told, the company plans to open 40 discount stores and as many as 165 supercenters nationwide and internationally during fiscal year 2000.
Jersey Mikes (732-282-2323) opened a sub shop franchised by JM Hopkins, LLC on Busby Parkway just north of Barrett in Kennesaw, GA. The company plans to open an additional seven stores in the metropolitan Atlanta, GA area in the coming few years. Towne Center Mall operates nearby. Franchisees Sheri and Twig Avent opened a unit in the Food Lion Shopping Center on Burlington Road in Stoney Creek, NC. Franchisees Subperior Sub Systems, Inc. opened a unit on the corner of Highway 421 and Broad Street in Dunn, NC, and franchisee Scott Hiatt opened a location at the intersection of South Main Street and Highpoint Road in the Winn Dixie Shopping Center in South High Point, NC. Carolina Investment and Management Group also opened a franchise location on St. James Boulevard near the Crowfield Plantation in Goose Creek, SC.
Angelo and Maxies (312-649-6952) plans to open an 8,300 sq.ft. steak house at The Palladium at CityPlace, a 600,000 sq.ft. multi-use entertainment center slated to open during October 2000 in West Palm Beach, FL. Other tenants at the center include FAO Schwarz, BCBG, Ann Taylor, Kenneth Cole, Williams Sonoma, Barnes and Noble and Macys Resort Department Store. Havana Republic also plans to open a cigar store at the center.
Costco (425-313-8100) plans to open a 148,000 sq.ft. wholesale club at the Gateway Plaza shopping center located near Texas 114 and Farm Road 1709 in Southlake, TX. Other tenants at the center include Kohls, Office Max, Thomasville Galleries, Old Navy and Michaels. The project faces local opposition.
Franks Nursery & Crafts, Inc. (313-366-8400) plans to open five stores in the Norfolk, VA area during 2000, before entering the Richmond, VA during 2001. 25 openings in total are planned for the region. The first two stores, each of which measures 22,000 sq.ft. with an additional 32,000 sq.ft. of outdoor yard space and 6,000 sq.ft. for nurseries, are slated to open this month in Norfolk and Hampton, VA. Three other locations in Chesapeake, Newport News and Yorktown are scheduled to open during Summer and Fall 2000.
Awful Arthurs Seafood Co. (540-344-2997) is planning to open a second restaurant at Towers Shopping Center in Roanoke, VA. The unit will occupy space formerly housing Kenny Rogers Roasters and Roanoke Roasters.
Lowes (336-685-4000) plans to open a 133,500 sq.ft. home improvement store to anchor Spy Run Commercial Center, a proposed 335,000 sq.ft. shopping center on the northwest corner of Lima and Ludwig Roads in Fort Wayne, IN. The site is just north of the vacated Builders Square facility on which Home Depot plans a Fall 2000 opening.
Bassett Furniture Direct plans to open a 26,500 sq.ft. furniture store at Phase III of First Colony, a 139,740 sq.ft. shopping center in Sugar Land, TX during October 2000. Phases I and II are nearly 100% occupied and are anchored by Kroger Signature Store, Walgreens and Gateway Country computer store.
Sofa Mart (303-296-9514), Oak Express (303-234-1513), Big Sur Waterbeds (303-371-8560), Denver Mattress (303-275-0033) and Bedroom Expressions (303-295-7590) each opened locations on "furinture row" at Cross Creek Commons, a 110,000 sq.ft. shopping center on Washinigton Center Road in Denver, CO.
Abercrombie & Fitch (614-577-6500) is planning to open two stores in Oak Park Mall in Overland Park, KS. One unit will be a new-concept "surf and skatewear" store with a July 2000 opening planned, and the other unit will be a childrens sportswear store, for which a September 2000 opening is planned.
Cantina Baja (816-531-1400) plans to open a Mexican-themed casual dining restaurant in the former Mama Changs Asian Restaurant on Martway Street in Mission, KS. The restaurant plans to open this month.
Hustler (310-860-9009) plans to open an adult merchandise store located at the intersection of Interstate 75 and Ohio State Highway 63 in Monroe, OH. A July 2000 opening is planned.
Ben Bridge Jeweler (206-448-8800) and Thomas Kincade Paradise Valley Gallery opened locations at Paradise Valley Mall, a 1.3 million sq.ft. shopping center in Phoenix, AZ anchored by Dillards, JC Penney, Macys, Robinsons-May and Sears. The jewelry store occupies 1,240 sq.ft. and the art gallery occupies 690 sq.ft.
Food Lion (717-597-1100) opened a 38,000 sq.ft. supermarket at Springs Plaza, a 70,000 sq.ft. shopping center located off of 1360 East SC 160 in Rock Hill, SC. The store will replace another Food Lion which recently closed at Fort Mill Square nearby. The unit marks the companys third opening in the Fort Mill area during the last year.
Bass Pro Shops Outdoor (417-873-5000) plans to open a 150,000 sq.ft. superstore at Festival Bay, a 1.1 million sq.ft. regional mall located on International Drive in Orlando, FL. The store, which has been built to resemble a hunting lodge, will feature an archery range, putting green, waterfalls and an aquarium. Cinemark Theaters opened a 20-screen megaplex at the center during December of last year, and anchor tenants Ron Jon Surf Shop and Vans are expected to open stores during Fall 2000.
Chick-Fil-A (404-765-8999) opened a 3,800 sqft restaurant on North Alafaya Trial in Waterford Lakes, FL.
Chipotle Mexican Grill (303-595-9000) plans to open two restaurants in the Washington, D.C. are during this month. A 2,000 sq.ft. unit is planned for the Gaithersburg Shopping Center, and a 2,600 sq.ft. location is planned for Mid-Pike Plaza on Rockville Pike.
Bourbon St. Grill (313-593-3288), Fusion Spa & Salon (313-271-2000) and Games Workshop (313-982-0032) recently opened units at Fairlane Town Center, located at the intersection of Southfield Freeway and Michigan Avenue in Dearborn, MI. The center is anchored by Saks Fifth Avenue, Hudsons, Lord & Taylor, JC Penney and Sears.
Walgreens (847-940-2500) plans to open a 15,000 sq.ft. pharmacy with a drive-thru on the northeast corner of Olive Boulevard and Dielman Road in Olivette, IL. The store will locate two blocks from the companys location on Olive. The opening is contingent upon the city granting permission for the construction of the proposed pharmacy.
Kohls (414-703-7000) recently opened an 87,000 sq.ft. apparel store at Water Town Place located on Michigan Avenue in Fenton, MI. In addition, a proposal to expand the Bayshore Mall in Glendale, WI calls for Kohls Department Store and Kohls Food Emporium to relocate to larger quarters. If approved, the plan will result in the demolition of the existing Kohl buildings, moving the department store from 68,000 sq.ft. to 82,000 sq.ft. and the food store from 40,500 sq.ft. to 56,000 sq.ft. in two new buildings attached to the mall. The project would increase mall size from 509,000 sq.ft. to 680,000 sq.ft, adding more room for new retailers and expanded parking.
Carquest (720-963-3000) will open eight auto parts stores at sites formerly housing Winston Warehouse Corporation (WWC) auto stores in southern TX. Carquest recently purchased WWC, which traded as Mr. Parts and Standard Auto Parts.
Old Navy (650-952-4400) plans to open a unit at the Sunrise Festival Shopping Center located at the intersection of Greenback Lane and Sunrise Boulevard in Citrus Heights, CA during November 2000. The store will be larger than the typical Old Navy outlets.
Slims Paint and Body (949-224-0300) plans to open its sixth auto collision shop, a 34,000 sq.ft. facility located on interstate 10 near Loop 1604 in San Antonio, TX during Fall 2000.
Barbeques Galore (949-581-1753) plans to open as many as 15 stores nationwide in the coming few years. The company recently opened three stores in CA as part of their general expansion plan.
Jande Candle Outlet (612-871-6548) recently opened a discount candle store located on Hennepin Street in Minneapolis, MN.
Synchrony (415-348-3500) opened a fine watch store in the Mall of America anchored by Sears and Macys in Minneapolis, MN.
Healthy Bites Grill (954-776-9985) recently opened its first restaurant in Fort Lauderdale, FL. The health-food reataurant company plans to open as many as eight units during the coming 18 months, six of which are slated to be franchise restaurants.
Noodles & Company (303-554-1963) plans to open as many as 12 fast-food noodle restaurants with emphasis in the midwestern markets of Milwaukee, WI and Chicago, IL. The CO-based company opened a restaurant, its eighth, in Minneapolis, MN during September of last year.
A&W Restaurants (248-699-2000) plans to open as many as 20 non-traditional supermarkets in the coming 18 months nationwide, and has plans for as many as 1,500 openings during the coming five years.
Lowes (336-685-4000) plans to open a 115,000 sq.ft. home improvement store located off of Interstate 75 at exit 218 in Henry Counta, GA during 2001.
Home Depot (770-433-8211) plans to open a unit on Route 72 near Stafford Square Mall in Manahawkin, NJ during December 2000. The company is also actively seeking additional sites for potential units in Ocean County.
Tommy Bahama (602-767-1100), an upscale island apparel and accessories shop, plans to open a 3,990 sq.ft. unit at Country Club Plaza on West 47th Street in Kansas City, MO during June 2000. The space was formerly occupied by the Executive Barber Shop and Laura Ashley Women & Childrens Store.
Office Max (216-921-6900) opened a 23,500 sq.ft. store in Cascade Marketplace located at the intersection of southeast Mill Plain Boulevard and southeast 136th Avenue in east Vancouver, WA. The unit is the companys second in the market, with the other store located at the Vancouver Plaza Shopping Center.
Davids Bridal, Inc. (610-896-2111) opened four stores during the first quarter of 2000 in Ontario and Northridge, CA, Vernon Hills, IL and Dallas, TX. The company plans to open more than 21 stores during the coming year.
Neiman Marcus (214-761-2410) plans to open a 90,000 sq.ft. specialty store at the Mall at Millenia, a 1.2 million sq.ft. regional shopping center in Orlando, FL. The store will be the third anchor at the center, joining Bloomingdales and Macys. The center is slated for a Fall 2002 opening, with construction on the Neiman Marcus store to commence in September 2000.
Brandsmart (305-624-5400) recently opened a 115,000 sq.ft. electronics superstore on South Dixie Highway in South Dade, FL. The store will occupy the space formerly housing Home Depot, and the centers tenant roster includes Marshalls and LA Fitness Gym. The company plans to open another unit in west Palm Beach, FL during 2001.
Gap Inc. (800-333-7899) will open a 4,500 sq.ft. Gap Kids and babyGap at River Park Square in Spokane, WA during July 2000. The new stores will join sister concepts The Gap and Gap Body at the mall. Another Gap concept, Banana Republic, is also scheduled to open at River Park later in the year.
Villagers Hardware (770-384-4390) will open a 37,426 sq.ft. store in Elizabeth, NJ during late Fall 2000. The store will be the Home Depot (770-433-8211) home enhancement concepts fourth test location. Another is scheduled to open in Saddle Brook, NJ during August 2000, and two others have already opened in East Brunswick and Garwood, NJ. In addition to retail space, the new Elizabeth store will feature an outdoor area of 4,700 sq.ft. for plants and gardening products.
Target Corporation (612-370-6948) will open a 32,000 sq.ft. Archer Farm Market adjoining an existing Target location in Shoreview, MN. The addition of the upscale grocery store will create the first SuperTarget in Minnesota and the 19th nationwide. Last year, the company announced plans to open 200 SuperTarget stores during the next decade.
Old Chicago and American Flatbread will open restaurants, and Rira will open a brewpub in the Old Port district of Portland, OR. Operated by Colorado-based Rock Bottom Restaurants, Inc. (303-664-4000), Old Chicago will open in a renovated 113-year-old building on Fore Street that formerly housed the Seamens Club restaurant. Rock Bottom is reportedly spending $1 million in renovations and $12,000 per month in rent. Vermont-based American Flatbread (802-496-8856) will open a 4,800 sq.ft. restaurant/bakery a few blocks away on Commercial Street in a vacant building that once housed a machine shop. The upscale brewpub Rira, operated by Guinness Corp. will open in the same building.
Nash Finch Company (612-832-0532) opened a 59,000 sq.ft. Econofoods supermarket in Rochester, MN during the first quarter of 2000. The company opened an IGA supermarket in Greenville, NC during the first quarter of 2000 as well, and at least four additional openings are planned for the Marshalltown, IA, Cedar Rapids, IA, Hudson, WI and Red Wing, MN markets. The companys pilot store concepts, Wholesale Food Outlet and Buy n Save, each plan expansion in the coming months with two Wholesale Food Outlets units scheduled to open in Omaha, NE and Muscatine, IA this month and one Buy n Save slated for a June 2000 opening. The company will also open 12 SunMarts this month in the converted Hinky Dinky spaces recently purchased by the company.
Jos. A. Bank (410-239-2700) plans to open as many as 100 units by 2003, including as many as five stores in the Baltimore-Washington, D.C. area. Plans call for at least six openings this year, with two units slated for a Fall opening in Chicago, IL and at least one opening in the Baltimore-Washington D.C. area.
Lamar Donuts (800-533-7489) plans to open as many as 35 locations in the Denver, CO market during the coming six years. The first unit opened in Denver on West Sixth Avenue last month.
Safeway (925-431-1000) plans to open a 66,000 sq.ft. supermarket in the space formerly housing Wal*Mart in the Centre at Plum Creek in Castle Rock, CO. Plans call for a renovation of the space, which has been vacant for more than three months, followed by a November 2000 opening. Safeway will close its 44,000 sq.ft. store at Phelps and Wilcox in Castle Rock and seek a new tenant while the renovation is underway.
The Childrens Place (201-558-2400) opened two units, one in the Metroplex at Grapevine Mills Mall and one at Ridgmar Mall in Fort Worth,TX during March of this year.
Dickinson Theaters plans to open a 40,000 sq.ft., 14-screen movie complex located at the intersection of Missouri Highway 152 and North Brighton Road in Kansas City, MO during Spring 2001.
Panera Bread (404-816-3260) opened a unit in a portion of the space formerly occupied by a 25,000 sq.ft. Sun TV located in Cranberry Township, PA. The balance of the space remains available.
Pamida (920-429-2211) opened three prototype 35,000 sq.ft. stores, one each in Dyersville, IA, Manistique, MI and Montpelier OH last month. The openings are the first of as many as 25 planned openings this year.
Staples (508-370-8500) opened a 25,000 sq.ft. store in the space formerly housing Sun TV in North Hills, PA.
Michaels (972-409-1300) opened a 25,000 sq.ft. store in the space formerly housing Sun TV in Monroeville, PA.
Samsonite (303-373-2000) will open a 5,000 sq.ft. store on Bond Street in London, England this July. The opening of the flagship London location will coincide with the launch of an extended line of travelwear and womens wear and accessories for the luggage retailer. The company maintains a retail presence in Milan, Brussels, Prague and Stockholm. Expansion is expected to continue in major metropolitan area across Europe, followed by a later move to the United States and Asia.
Best Buy Company, Inc. (612-947-2000) will open a 46,000 sq.ft. location in Cottonwood Corners, Albuquerque, NM. Construction is scheduled to begin in midsummer, with an anticipated opening during early 2001. The new store will be the second Albuquerque location for the consumer electronics retailer, which is also making final preparations to open a third San Antonio, TX location at 8410 Agora Parkway this summer.
PETCO (858-453-7845) recently opened a 15,000 sq.ft. store on Northtowne Lane in Reno, NV. It is the second Reno location for the specialty pet food and supply retailer. PETCO also relocated its Glendale, CA store into a larger headquarters, moving from 300 North Glendale Avenue into a 15,000 sq.ft. space at 231 North Glendale Ave. The new Glendale location is more than twice the size of the original store, allowing an expanded line of products along with new services such as pet grooming. Both the Reno and Glendale stores will feature a small animal and reptile area, fresh and saltwater fish aquariums, a bird room and a grooming salon.
Recreational Equipment, Inc. (REI) (800-426-4840) opened its first international location at the Grandberry Mall in Minami Machida, a suburb of Tokyo, Japan. The new flagship store will be owned and operated by REI Japan KK, a wholly owned subsidiary of REI, which is based in Washington and operates 54 U.S. retail locations.
HW Home (303-545-0320) opened a 3,200 sq.ft. home funrnishings boutique on Pearl Street in Boulder, CO. The store opened one door down from the companys 1,500 sq.ft. unit which closed to accommodate the new facility.
Quick Chek Foodstores (908-534-7191) recently opened a 4,700 sq.ft. store on Tonelle Avenue in Fairview, NJ. The compnay also opened a 5,000 sq.ft. store on Route 31 in Hopewell, NJ. Plans call for five openings in the coming year, with a 4,700 sq.ft. store slated for an opening this month on Eisenhower Parkway in Roseland, NJ, and the companys first store with a gas island will open during July 2000 on Route 31 in West Amwell, NJ. The three additional openings will occur in South Plainfield, NJ, Hackettstown, NJ and Lafayette, NJ.
