Lowes Home Improvement (336-658-4411) plans to open a 136,000 sq.ft. store at Westman 2000, a power center located in Kalamazoo, MI, during October 2000. Other tenants include a 60,000 sq.ft. supermarket and a seven-screen theater. The Meyer Wiener Company, which owns and manages the center, is currently negotiating with other "big box" tenants.
Jersey Mikes Sub Shop (732-282-2323) opened the companys seventh store in Atlanta, GA. The company plans as many as fifteen more openings in the metro Atlanta area in the coming years. The company currently operates 190 restaurants.
Walgreens (847-940-2500) plans to open a 15,120 sq.ft. store at the intersection of 92nd and Commercial Avenues in Chicago, IL.
Rave Girl (212-279-4961) plans to open as many as 40 junior and pre-teen apparel shops nationwide by the end of 2000. One store, located at Crossgates Mall in Albany, NY, will be a prototype. The company plans to open as many as fifty stores per year annually during the coming few years.
JC Penney (922-431-1000) plans to open an 85,000 sq.ft. store in a space formerly housing Uptons at Patrick Henry Mall in Newport News, VA. The company is currently retrofitting the space.
Food Lion (704-633-8250) is planning to open a location at the intersection of Routes 14 and 198 in Mathews, VA. Armada/Hoffler Development Co. will be coordinating the proposed 30,000 sq.ft. store, which faces local opposition.
Superstand (713-626-4888) plans to open a 4,232 sq.ft. store at the Streets of Woodfield in Schaumberg, IL. The independent purveyor of periodicals sells over 4,000 titles including major national and international newspapers, magazines and other publications. Mid-America Asset Management Company (MAAMCO) represents the company exclusively in its expansion plans. A June 2000 opening is slated.
Discovery! Clothing Company (773-777-4494) plans to open a 10,157 sq.ft. store at Woodfield Commons West in Schaumberg, IL. The store will be the companys ninth in the Chicago, IL region. A July 2000 opening is slated.
Papa Johns (803-377-7272) opened a pizza delivery and take-out store in a Wal*Mart-anchored shopping center on the J.A. Cochran bypass in Chester, PA. Other tenants in the center include Dollar Tree and Subway.
Dicks Sporting Goods (412-809-0100) plans to open a store at Hamilton Village, a 437,397 sq.ft. power center in Gunbarrel Road in Chattanooga, TN. The shopping center is directly across the street from Hamilton Place Mall. Other tenants at Hamilton Village include Old Country Buffet, Babies R Us, Stein Mart, Factory Card Outlet, Books-A-Million, Office Max and Wal*Mart.
Winn-Dixie (904-783-5000) plans to open a supermarket at the Shoppes of Liberty City, a nine-acre shopping center in Miami, FL. Konover Construction Corporation has been named general contractor for the project.
Cato (704-554-8510) plans to open as many as 100 fashion apparel stores during this year, bringing the companys total store count to 899. Expansion will take place in the existing markets and in adjacent states.
Costco (425-313-8100) and Home Depot (770-433-8211) plan to open stores at Midtown Marketplace, a 30-acre shopping center at the intersection of Linwood Boulevard and Main Street in Kansas City, MO. Construction will begin on both stores during June. Costco hopes to open its store during November 2000, while the Home Depot location is scheduled to open during Spring 2001. A 5,000 sq.ft. IHOP restaurant is being considered for the center as well, which will contain two additional buildings. Home Depot has acquired the former Builders Square store on Lima Road in Fort Wayne, IN for its planned expansion into that market. The company also acquired a 42-acre parcel in Glendale, CA from Pinnacle Entertainment, Inc.
ShopKo Stores, Inc. (402-339-2400) plans to open as many as nine ShopKo stores and as many as 25 Pamida stores during the coming year as part of its corporate plan to grow square footage by 8% to 10% annually.
Wal*Mart (501-273-4000) plans to open a 210,000 sq.ft. Wal*Mart Supercenter at Harbour View Station East, a 50-acre shopping center off of Town Point Road in Suffolk, VA. The store will be the companys second in the Suffolk area. A 16-screen movie theater is scheduled to open at the shopping center during November. Because discussions to bring the store to Suffolk began before the town enacted a growth-control law, Wal*Mart will not be subject to building to the new specifications. However, the city is negotiating with the stores developer, Landonomics Group, to incorporate some of those specifications in the building plan. Wal*Mart is also considering opening a 200,000 sq.ft.+ supercenter at the northeast corner of Davis Boulevard and North Tarrant Parkway in North Richland Hills, TX. The site is one of three in the area actively being scouted by the company. The others are in Keller County and north Fort Worth.
Richs Department Store (513-579-7000) plans to open a prototype store in Buford Mall in the Atlanta, GA metropolitan area. The company also plans to open another prototype store in GA at Gwinnett County Mall.
Ann Taylor (212-536-3200) will open a store in the MacArthur Center in Norfolk, VA. The high-end womens clothing retailer will replace Eagles Nest at the center, and will operate next to Talbots on the malls second floor.
Kaufmans Department Stores (314-342-6300) plans to open a store in Pittsburgh, PA during this month (its second in the market) and a store at the Carousel Mall in Syracuse, NY during next month.
Bennigans (972-588-5000), which left the Chicago, IL North Shore market three years ago, plans to re-enter it with a unit slated to open during Summer 2000. The casual dining restaurant will join Macaroni Grill and On The Border as recent additions to the area.
Fred Flemings Famous Bar-B-Que (727-822-3733), which opened its first restaurant eight months ago in St. Petersburg, FL, is planning to open two additional restaurants in New Port Richey and Tampa, FL. Tom Schelldorf, co-founder and chief executive of the company, was also the co-founder of Hops Restaurant Bar and Brewery, a 67-unit restaurant chain operating nationwide. Plans for the new company call for similar expansion in the future.
Bed, Bath & Beyond (908-688-0888) plans to open as many as 60 superstores during the coming year in new and existing markets.
Reeds Jewelers (910-763-4669) plans to open more than 10 stores during the coming year, including expansion into the new markets of DE and PA. The chain currently operates 109 stores in 17 states, primarily in the southeast and midwest.
Aarons Sales & Leasing (404-231-0011) opened a home furnishings, electronics and appliances store on North Prospect Avenue in Champaign, IL, and is planning another opening in Bloomington, IL in the near future.
Publix (941-688-1188) plans to open a supermarket at a 134,000 sq.ft. shopping center at the intersection of Cypress Parkway and Doverplum Avenue in Poinciana, FL. SEC Commercial Realty Group Inc. is developing the center.
Southland Corporation (214-828-7011) will open the companys 21st 7-Eleven convenience store in the Bradenson-Sarasota market in FL. The 2,940 sq.ft. store, located at the northeast corner of Whitfield Avenue and U.S. 301, will have 12 gas pumps and a covering which will permit customers to walk into the store from the gas island.
Lowes (336-658-4000) plans to open a 164,000 sq.ft. store in Auburn, WA under the trade name Eagle Hardware during November 2000. The store will be only a 10-minute drive from two big-box hardware retailers (Eagle Hardware and Home Depot) in the area.
Jacobson Stores, Inc. (517-764-6400) plans to open its third central FL location in the proposed 245,000 sq.ft. Cascades at Isleworth shopping center at the conjunction of Conroy-Windermere and Apopka-Vineland Roads in southwest Orange County. The company operates 24 locations in six states, including 11 in FL. A December 2001 opening is scheduled.
Best Buy (612-947-2000) plans to open two stores in Watertown and Dedham, MA. The Watertown store will be located on Arsenal Street across from the Arsenal Mall and is slated to open during late Summer 2000. The Dedham store will be located on Providence Highway Route One and is scheduled for a late Fall 2000 opening. The openings give the company 10 stores in MA, and a total of 60 openings are planned during the coming year. Another store, a 45,000 sq.ft. facility in Greensburg, PA, is slated to open on Donohoe Road near Millers Wood Shopping Center during this Summer.
Borders Books and Music (734-477-1100) plans to open a 30,000 sq.ft. store at the Kendall Mall Shopping Center in Kendall, FL during October 2000.
99 Cents Only (323-980-8145) is seeking real estate opportunities in the Phoenix and Tucson, AZ markets for 25 planned openings in the coming few years. The stores average 20,000 sq.ft. and are positioned in middle-income neighborhoods to attract cost-conscious shoppers. The first opening in AZ is slated for 2001. The company currently operates 86 locations in CA. The company also plans to open as many as nine discount stores throughout inland CA by the end of 2001. The company opened a store in Hemet, CA during last month, and has plans to open two additional stores on Arlington Avenue in Riverside, CA and on Foothill Boulevard in Upland, CA during summer.
