Who’s Opening & Where


Elder-Beerman (937-296-2693) opened a 62,000 sq.ft. department store in West Bend, WI, and a 74,000 sq.ft. store in Howell, MI. The stores are the third and fourth new-concept units and are in keeping with the company’s announced strategy to expand the concept in smaller, underserved markets. Another new concept store is slated to open this month.

 

Baer’s Furniture (800-543-2092) opened a 53,000 sq.ft. new concept furniture showroom called Baer’s Back Room at Pompano Marketplace, a 220,000 sq.ft. shopping center located on South Federal Highway in Margate, FL. The center is currently 84% occupied and managed by Terranova Corporation.

 

Muvico Theaters (954-564-6550) plans to open 106 screens by the end of 2000. The company, which offers a luxury movie experience including curbside parking, stadium-style seating, made-to-order meals and more, currently operates 127 screens and one IMAX theater in FL.

 

Olympia Sports (207-846-9756), an athletic clothing, sporting goods and health and fitness equipment retailer based in Yarmouth, ME, opened a 5,000 sq.ft. store at Quincy Granite Place, a 61,000 sq.ft. shopping center located in Quincy, MA.

 

Jos. A. Bank (410-239-5715) opened two locations in Murray and Provo, UT. The two stores are the first in the company’s planned westward expansion expected to yield between 75 and 100 openings by its fiscal year 2003. The company has plans to open seven stores in CT, GA, IL and NJ by December 2000.

 

Charming Shoppes, Inc. (215-638-6909) plans to have opened a total of 106 stores by the end of 2000, another 140 openings during 2001 and 160 openings during 2002. The openings will occur under each of the company’s three brands--Fashion Bug, Catherine’s Plus and Added Dimensions. All told, the company plans to open 1,000 stores in the coming five years.

 

Kohl’s (262-703-7000) opened a total of six department stores in OK. Two stores were opened in Tulsa, with one each at Riverside Market and Eastside Market; and one each in Owassa, Yukon, Edmond and Moore. The Edmond store will measure 86,584 sq.ft. and resembles the Wal*Mart Supercenter at the same intersection.

 

Sharper Image (415-445-6000) plans to open three to five stores during the remainder of its fiscal year 2000, which runs through January 2001. In the preceding six months, the company opened a flagship location at Union Square located in San Francisco, CA and another unit at Horton Plaza located in San Diego, CA.

 

Roadhouse Grill (954-957-2600) has entered into a joint venture with Cremonini S.P.A. to open more than 60 restaurants in principal European countries such as Italy, France, Spain and Great Britain by the year 2004.

 

Nordstrom (206-373-2111) plans to open two full-line stores and four additional Nordstrom Rack locations by the end of its fiscal year 2000, which concludes during January 2001.

 

Meritage Hospitality Group Inc. (616-776-2600) plans to open three Wendy’s hamburger restaurants in the Grand Rapids, MI area during the coming month. Two of the units will be combination stores, sharing space with Meijer’s convenience stores and gas stations. The company also opened a restaurant located at the intersection of 28th Street and Breton Avenue in Grand Rapids during September 2000 at a property formerly housing Mr. Fables. The openings will bring the company’s total restaurant count in the southern and western MI region to 34.

 

Wal*Mart (501-273-4000) plans to open a 200,000 sq.ft. supercenter located on Garner’s Ferry Road directly across the street from an existing Wal*Mart located in Columbia, S.C. The existing store opened during February 1999 and will be vacated once the supercenter is completed. The existing 130,000 sq.ft. unit co-anchors a strip center with Food Lion.

 

Borders Books & Music (734-477-1100) plans to open a 23,000 sq.ft. store at Camp Hill City Mall this month, the company’s second unit in the Harrisburg, PA area. The company also plans to open a 25,000 sq.ft. store at Paramus Towne Square Shopping Center located between Century Road and Midland Avenue in Paramus, NJ. Anchors include Circuit City, while other tenants include Linens ‘n Things, Buy Buy Baby and Ramsey Outdoor Sports. An opening is planned during this month, and the store will become the company’s second in Paramus. The other is located in Garden State Plaza Mall.

 

Haverty Furniture Companies (404-443-2900) plans to open eight showrooms by the end of 2001. Six of the eight units will be built in accordance with the company’s new store specifications, which require additional square footage than its older units. The first of these locations will open during December 2000 and will be located in the metropolitan Charlotte, NC market. Four others will open in TX in the coming months, with the first to open at Stone Creek Mall in Frisco, TX during the coming two months; another store, located near Lakeline Mall in Austin, TX will open during the first quarter of 2001; and two other units will open in the new market of San Antonio, TX during the fourth quarter of 2001. The company will also open a location in Ft. Walton, FL this month; close an existing store in Sarasota, FL and move into a space formerly occupied by Roberds located on Tamiani Trail; and open a unit in Naples during the first quarter of 2001.
