Whos Opening & WhereBorders Books & Music (734-477-1100) opened a 22,673 sq.ft. unit adjacent to Sears at Independence Mall located on Independence Way off of Interstate Three in Plymouth, MA last month.
Pamida (920-429-2211) opened a record number of stores, 56, during a one-week period last month. Each of the stores is located in small, rural communities in nine states including IA, IL, IN, KS, KY, MI, MO, TN and WI. The company is a subsidiary of ShopKo Stores Inc.
Costco (425-313-6360) plans to open a 148,000 sq.ft. store located on Causeway Boulevard in Brandon, FL later this month. The opening marks the companys return to the greater Tampa, FL area after having closed all three of its Tampa stores in 1990. The company also plans to open a unit in Jacksonville, FL later this month. The openings will bring the companys store count in FL to 15.
Wal*Mart (501-273-4000) plans to open a supercenter located along GA Highway 515 in Blairsville, GA. The plan is contingent upon approval from the Union County authorities and faces local opposition. The company also opened a 53,000 sq.ft. Neighborhood Market located at the intersection of 81st Street and Sheridan Road in Tulsa, OK. The company plans to open more than 300 stores during 2001, which represents the companys largest expansion in its history. Between 170 and 180 of the openings are planned to be superstores, of which 100 to 110 will replace existing smaller stores. The company also plans to open 40 standard discount stores, 40 to 50 Sams Club stores and 15 to 20 Neighborhood Market stores. An additional 100 to 110 units are planned internationally.
Dave & Busters (214-357-9588) signed a development agreement with an international development company, Grupo Ildomani, to open five stores in Mexico in the coming months. The first unit is slated to open in Cancun during 2001.
Target (612-304-6099) opened a 175,000 sq.ft. SuperTarget unit located at Superior Marketplace in Superior, CO last month. Anchors include Michaels Arts & Crafts, PETsMART, OfficeMax and T.J. Maxx.
Walgreens (847-940-2500) continues on track to open 500 units during 2001. The companys long-range plans include opening as many as 6,000 stores by 2010. The company was successful in doubling its number of stores in the previous decade, going from approximately 1,500 units in 1990 to more than 3,100 in 2000.
Furniture Galleries (303-388-9273) opened an 18,150 sq.ft. unit at Broadway Marketplace, a 382,633 sq.ft. shopping center located at the intersection of Broadway and Alameda Avenues in Denver, CO. Anchors include Sams, Kmart, OfficeMax, Albertsons and Pep Boys.
Galyans Trading Company (317-532-0200) opened a 100,000 sq.ft. sporting goods and outdoor equipment store located at Flatirons Mall, a shopping center located outside of Boulder CO. Katz & Associates is the exclusive real estate broker for Galyans.
Kmart (248-643-1000) opened a 143,000 sq.ft. SuperKmart unit at Madison Center, a 100%-occupied shopping center located at the intersection of John R and 12 Mile Roads in Madison Heights, MI. The company expanded an 83,000 sq.ft. standard store to accommodate the new store. Further expansion of the center by 25,000 sq.ft. plus the building of an outlot is planned.
Tullys Coffee (415-772-0241) plans to double its size each year in the coming years. The company currently operates 97 units, and expansion markets for the years 2000 and 2001 include the East Bay region of San Francisco, CA, Los Angeles, CA, Orange County, CA, Portland, OR and Chicago, IL.
Wetzels Pretzels (626-432-6900) plans to open 70 units in 2001 and an additional 70 in 2002. Currently, the company operates 127 soft pretzel outlets nationwide.
Carpeteria (888-656-0066) plans to open as many as 76 units in AZ, CA, OR, NV and WA by the end of 2002. Expansion will be concentrated in CA where as many as 45 of the openings may occur, with emphasis in Los Angeles and Orange Counties, the San Joaquin Valley, and north of Sacramento.
Tommy Bahama (480-767-1100) plans to open 12 units, six of which are slated for Northern and Southern CA, during 2001. Sites for the remaining six tropical-themed lifestyle concepts stores are being selected from prospective locations in AZ, CO, FL, GA, HI, IL, MI, NC, NV and TX.
Topz (714-960-3150) plans to open 10 restaurants in Southern CA during 2001. The hamburger restaurants have been expanding at a rate of one unit per month in recent years.
Guitar Center (818-735-8800) expects to open 14 stores nationwide during 2001. The company presently operates 71 stores in nine states, focusing on major metropolitan areas.
White Castle (614-204-3753) opened its first unit in Delaware County, OH, and its 21st statewide, located at the intersection of U.S. Highway 36/37 and Fourwinds Drive at Interstate 71 in Sunbury.
