Who’s Opening & Where


Gap 2000 (650-952-4400) will open a 19,095 sq.ft. store next month at Empire Mall, anchored by Dayton’s, J.C. Penney, Younkers and Sears, and located in Sioux Falls, SD. Other tenants include C.J. Banks and Yankee Candle. Auntie Ann’s Pretzels, China Pantry, Burger King, Dairy Queen and Taco John are also recent additions or relocations at the mall’s Harvest Cafe Food Court.

 

Circuit City (804-527-4000) opened one of its new concept stores on Dogwood Drive Southeast in Conyers, GA last month. Two other stores located on Bullsboro Drive in Newnan, GA and Martha Berry Highway in Rome, GA are slated to open this month. The openings are in addition to the completion of the remodeling of the company’s other 13 stores operating in the Atlanta, GA metropolitan area. Over the next three years, Circuit City will redesign all 600 of its stores nationwide.

 

Crown Trophy (800-583-8228) opened its 90th unit located in Batavia, OH in recent weeks, and remains on target to open its goal of 100 stores by year’s end. The company is the nation’s only awards industry franchise.

 

Once Upon a Child (763-520-8500) opened its first children’s apparel store in Japan at a location in Osaka. The Duskin Company, Ltd. owns the master franchising rights for Once Upon a Child in Japan.

 

Subway (203-878-2791) opened its first submarine sandwich restaurant in Warsaw, Poland in recent weeks. The company plans to open two additional units in Poland in the coming months. All three units are owned by a private investor.

 

Goody’s (865-966-2000) plans to open a 35,000 sq.ft. family clothing store in the English Village shopping center located in Decatur, AL; a 23,000 sq.ft. store at Sentry Station located in Ft. Oglethorpe, GA; and a 17,000 sq.ft. store at Logansport Mall located in Logansport, IN. Additionally, the company is relocating a unit at Westlake Mall in Bessemer, AL to 59 West Shopping Center located on Academy Drive in the same city. The company, which has opened 22 stores to date during its current fiscal year, plans to open 10 units and relocate seven others by the end of its fiscal year.

 

Cutter & Buck (206-622-4191) plans to open a 5,000 sq.ft. sportswear store at The Garden on El Paseo, a shopping center anchored by Saks Fifth Avenue, Brooks Brothers and Talbots located in Palm Desert, CA in the coming months. Other retailers with plans to open units at the center include Harry and David (3,270 sq.ft.), J. Stephens Shoes (1,450 sq.ft.) and Pacifica in the Desert (5,782 sq.ft.).

 

Sonic (405-280-7654) plans to meet its goal of opening 190 to 200 drive-in restaurants in its coming fiscal year.

 

BigFatWow! (972-650-0101) plans to open 29 "Wow Centers" in a group of malls owned by CBL & Associates Properties. Eleven of the centers are expected to open by December 2000, and the remaining facilities will be open by the end of January 2001.

 

Ebony Development Co. is seeking funding to bring a 40,000 sq.ft. supermarket to a vacant lot located on Centre Avenue across from the Hill House community center in Pittsburgh, PA. Shop n’ Save had tentatively planned to occupy the building last year, but ultimately decided not to go ahead with the project. Ebony is currently in discussions with Giant Eagle.

 

Sentry Foods (262-877-2155) plans to build a 52,000 sq.ft. replacement supermarket for its existing 26,000 sq.ft. store located in Burlington, WI.

 

Stein Mart (904-346-1506) opened a 19,000 sq.ft. clearance center at Forest Fair Mall, a 1.8 sq.ft. shopping center located on Forest Fair Drive in Cincinnati, OH. Anchors include Elder Beerman, Kohl’s and bigg’s. Stein Mart opened a total of 28 stores in 1999 and now has over 200 stores in operation. Plans call for as many as 300 openings in the coming several years.

 

Famous Dave’s (612-294-1300) will bring its concept to the Western U.S. with the opening of two restaurants and blues clubs in Salt Lake City, UT. The company will convert two existing steakhouse restaurants in the Salt Lake City suburbs of Midvale and Layton. The company plans to open another company-owned unit and two franchised units by the end of 2000.

 

Jos. A. Bank (410-239-2700) opened two stores last month, one in Alpharetta, GA and another in Deer Park, IL. The openings are part of the company’s plan to open between 75 and 100 units by its fiscal year 2003. The company expects to finalize its schedule for Spring 2001 expansion in the coming weeks.

 

A.C. Moore (610-649-3604) opened three units in the third quarter of its fiscal year 2000. The company now operates 49 stores.

 

Rich’s (513-579-7905) opened a unit at the Mall of Georgia, a 227,300 sq.ft. shopping center located at the intersection of Interstate 85 and GA Highway 20 in Buford, GA. The store will represent the company’s new prototype design.

 

Sav-On (714-739-6738) plans to open 30 to 40 drug stores in the new market of WA during the coming few years. Initally, expansion will occur at a rate of eight to 10 stores per annum over the coming three years located in Everett, north Puget Sound, Thrashers Corner in Snohomish County and Kitsap County.

 

Rite Aid (717-761-2633) has changed its plans to open a unit at the intersection of Sixth and Union Avenue I Tacoma, WA. The company has sold the building to Bartell Drugs, which plans to open a store, its 50th, during Winter 2000.

 

Costco (425-313-6360) opened a 148,000 sq.ft. replacement unit for its 134,000 sq.ft. unit located on South Pine Street in Tacoma, WA last month. The new store is located on South 37th Street and will come equipped with gas pumps. The company plans to open as many as 18 units, including the relocation of three existing warehouses to larger facilities, by the end of 2000.

 

Crate & Barrel (847-272-2888) is leaving its position at the Galleria in Houston, TX to open a 39,000 sq.ft. housewares megastore at Highland Village located at the intersection of Westheimer and Drexel in Houston, TX. The space was formerly occupied by a la Madeleine restaurant and Laura Ashley. An opening is slated for late 2001. Other tenants at Highland Village include Tootsie’s.

 

Safeway (925-467-3000) plans to open a 55,000 sq.ft. supermarket at Briggsmore Shopping Center located near the intersection of McHenry and Briggsmore Avenues in Modesto, CA later this month. The scheduled opening contributed to the decision to close a 30,000 sq.ft. New Deal supermarket located directly across the street from the center at McHenry Village.

 

Office Depot (561-438-7635) opened a total of 13 stores nationwide and in Canada during the third quarter of its fiscal year 2000, which concluded in September.

 

Tricon Global Restaurants (972-338-7331) which trades as Pizza Hut, Taco Bell and KFC, increased its projected number international openings from 700 to 800 for the coming year based on an acceleration of its rate of openings during the company’s last business quarter.

 

Drug Emporium (740-548-7080) plans to open four stores during the coming six months and an additional five stores during the subsequent 12-month period.

 

Gristedes Sloans Inc. (212-956-5803) plans to commit $10 million to $12 million to its store remodeling and expansion program for fiscal year 2000, based on its current projections of available funds.

 

ShopKo (920-497-2211) opened a 112,000 sq.ft. store located on Pioneer Parkway in Peoria, IL last month. The company now operates 15 stores in IL.

 

Outback Steakhouse (813-282-1225) opened a 6,300 sq.ft. restaurant located on North Telshor Boulevard in Las Cruces, NM.
