Whos Opening & WhereRave Girl (212-279-4961) opened its first three non-mall locations outside the New York City trade area. The stores are located at the Largo Mall Shopping Center in Largo, FL, 280 Metro Center in San Francisco, CA and Woodgrove Festival Shopping Center in Woodridge, IL. Rave Girl parent company G&G Retail, Inc. finds high volume strip centers as suitable alternatives to enclosed regional malls due to lower occupancy costs. The company is negotiating leases for 10 more stores to open in the spring of 2001.
Frys Electronics (408-487-4500) will open a discount retail store in Houston, TX. Frys, known for their eclectic mix of products (high-tech products to snack food) and themed stores, will be located on North Interstate 45 next to the Compaq Factory Outlet. The store is the companys 17th nationally and its third in Texas (Dallas and Arlington).
Kohls (262-703-7000) opened three department stores in the Tulsa, OK market. The stores are located at Eastside Market (71st and Garnett), Riverside Market (9595 S. Delaware Avenue) and in Owasso (112405 E. 97th St. North). The clothing and housewares retailer also opened three stores on Long Island, NY; two stores in Denver, CO; one store each in Flint, MI; Chicago; Detroit; St. Louis; Philadelphia and Winston/ Salem, NC. Future expansion includes 32 stores in the New York City area and 18 in the Dallas-Fort Worth market. The company plans to operate 320 stores in 26 states by the end of the year.
Goodys Family Clothing, Inc. (865-966-2000) opened eight new stores and relocated two others. New stores are placed in Decatur, AL (English Village Shopping Center), Fort Oglethorpe, GA (Sentry Station Shopping Center) and Logansport, IN (Logansport Mall). Locations in Ruston, LA; Alexandria, LA; Lumberton, NC; Mooresville, NC and Princeton, WV have also opened. The Bessemer, AL location has been moved from the Westlake Mall to the 59 West Shopping Center. Goodys plans to open 10 more stores this fiscal year, bringing the total to 32 for the year. They will relocate or remodel 13 locations in the same timeframe. The company operates 307 stores in AL, AR, FL, GA, IL, IN, KY, MS, MO, NC, OH, OK, LA, SC, TN, TX, VA and WV.
Craft & Stuff (561-844-1557) will open a 10,400 sq.ft. store at Waterford Lakes Town Center in Orlando, FL.
Publix Super Markets, Inc. (863-688-1188) will open a 50,000 sq.ft. store at the Cascades at Isleworth in Orlando, FL. The development will take nearly 30 acres at the southwest corner of Apopka-Vineland and Conroy-Windmere Roads. The center will be anchored by Jacobsons. Publix also plans to open a 44,270 sq.ft. supermarket located along Glenwood Avenue in the East Lake section of Atlanta, GA. A Fall 2001 opening is planned.
Dianes Good to Go (303-388-4425) will close two Denver area locations while looking for sites for expansion. The gourmet take out food concept will close its Araphoe County (Dry Creek Rd. and University Blvd.) and Highlands Ranch (9567 S. University Blvd.) locations. Expansion possibilities include the redeveloped Lowry area, near Washington Park and in Boulder.
Hechts (314-342-6300) will expand their Valley View Mall location in Roanoke, VA by taking 50,000 sq.ft. of a former Montgomery Ward. The upper-level expansion will add 50% to the store and will be completed by June. Hechts operates 426 department stores in 43 states and is a division of May Department Stores, Co.
Old Navy (650-952-4400) opened a second store in the Richmond, VA metropolitan area last month at The Shops at Willow Lawn. The companys first store in the Richmond market opened in Virginia Center Commons during July.
Wal*Mart (501-273-4000) opened a 208,000 sq.ft. supercenter located at the intersection of 96th Street North and U.S. Highway 169 in Owasso, OK. The supercenter becomes the first to feature an Eskimo Joes clothing outlet, which sells a line of clothing from the original Joes Clothes in Stillwater, OK. The 1,000 sq.ft. store, while located inside the Wal*Mart supercenter, is owned and operated by Eskimo Joes. In addition to Eskimo Joes, several other leased-space shops are housed in the supercenter including a portrait studio, a hair and nail salon, a hearing aid center, a one-hour photo processing center and an Arvest State Bank branch. The supercenter replaces a smaller Wal*Mart location recently closed at 86th Street and U.S. Highway 169.
Pier 1 Imports (817-878-8000) opened 14 stores and closed six others in North America during the second quarter of its fiscal year 2001. The company also opened a store in the United Kingdom, bringing its total store count to 845 stores.
Bed, Bath & Beyond (908-688-0888) opened 31 stores during the first half of its fiscal year 2000, and expects to open an additional 33 stores and expand two others by the end of fiscal year 2000.
Reeds Jewelers (910-350-3100) has committed to opening five units during the remainder of the year.
Discount Auto Parts (863-687-9226) plans to open a total of 40 stores during its fiscal year 2001, which concludes during August 2001. Currently, the company operates 653 units.
Parisian (901-937-2113) opened a 130,000 sq.ft. specialty store located at Citadel Mall in a space formerly occupied by Belks in Charleston, SC. Anchors include Dillards, J.C. Penney and Sears. The company operates 44 stores located in the southeastern U.S.
Kroger (513-762-4000) is considering opening a 30,000 sq.ft. supermarket located at the intersection of Techwood and Parker Street in Atlanta, GA.
