Who's Opening & WhereBest Buy (612-995-7049) plans to open its first location in Pittsburgh, CA. The consumer electronics and entertainment store will be located on Century Boulevard.
Wal*Mart (501-273-4000) plans to open a 208,000 sq.ft. supercenter located on a 29-acre site along the Arlington/Kennedale city limits located west of U.S. Highway 287 on Little Road in TX. The Kennedale City Council recently issued a 120-day moratorium on all commercial retail store construction along the Interstate 20 and Business Route 287 corridor, but the moratorium is not considered an impediment to the development of the supercenter. Shortly thereafter, the Arlington Planning and Zoning Commission voted 5-2 in favor of issuing a zoning change that would allow for the building of the store. Local opposition remains.
Whole Foods Market (512-477-5566) plans to open five supermarkets during the fourth quarter of its current fiscal year. The company recently signed two leases for stores in Kansas City, KS and Sonoma County, CA, and has 25 stores currently under development averaging 35,000 sq.ft. When the five stores are opened, the company will have a total of 117 stores operating.
Earful of Books, Inc. (512-343-2620) recently opened an audiobooks-only bookstore, Earful, located on Electric Road in Roanoke, VA. The 2,200 sq.ft. store is the first of five planned stores for the VA market, with units planned for the Richmond, Fredericksburg and Charlottesville areas commencing in early 2001. The store is co-located with Blockbuster Video and is part of a larger franchising agreement that allows as many as 150 corporate and franchise Earful stores to be co-located at Blockbuster sites by 2003. The company now operates 15 units nationwide, including locations in MD, NJ, NC, OH, TX and WI, in addition to 32 stores under contract in CA, FL, OR and WA.
Hacienda (219-272-5922) plans to open a restaurant on an outparcel located in Northbrook Village, a 90,000 sq.ft. strip center with an additional 50,000 sq.ft. in outparcels located at the intersection of Lima and Dupont Roads in Fort Wayne, IN. An October 2000 opening is planned.
Toys R Us (201-262-7800) is planning to open the worlds largest toy store, a 101,000 sq.ft. flagship facility located at Times Square on Broadway between 44th and 45th in New York, NY.
Emporium (541-746-9611) plans to open a unit in a space formerly housing Lamonts in Aberdeen, WA in the coming few weeks. The company will be closing a 40,000 sq.ft. store at Mall 205 in Portland, OR at about the same time.
Golden Corral (919-781-9310) opened the first of several planned restaurants in the Dayton, OH metropolitan area last month. The store is located on Kingsridge Drive. The company also plans to open a second site in Beavercreek, OH near the Mall at Fairfield Commons, and is scouting sites for additional units in Vandalia and Springfield, OH.
Applebees (913-967-4000), Johnny Leverocks Seafood House and Demetrios Restaurant and Pizza each have opened or plan to open a restaurant in East Manatee, FL in the coming weeks or months. The Leverocks Seafood House, located on 19th Street East, opened last month. The Applebees unit, located on State Road 70 East, is slated for an opening this month. The Demetrios project, also located on State Road 70 East, will not be completed until March 2001.
Lowes (336-685-4000) plans to build a 143,000 sq.ft. superstore including a large lawn and garden center located on a 12-acre site on A Street Northeast in Auburn, WA. The store is scheduled to open early in 2001.
Mansours (706-884-7305) recently opened its fifth and largest department store located at Augusta Exchange shopping center in LaGrange, GA.
H-E-B (210-938-8000) plans to open at least nine large pantry stores between 50,000 sq.ft. and 80,000 sq.ft. in the Houston, TX during the coming two years. The largest will be an 80,000 sq.ft. store in the Gulfgate Center located at the junction of Loop 610 and the Gulf Freeway. The first of the openings is planned during November.
OReilly Auto Parts (417-862-3333) opened four units in Tarrant County, TX, one each in Fort Worth, Euless, Bedford and Watauga. The company plans to open a total of 100 units during this year, and operates more than 600 stores in nine states overall.
Target (612-304-6099) plans to open a superstore on a 14.7-acre site at South Main and Braesmain near the Astrodome in Houston, TX. Stadium Bowl formerly occupied the site.
Mark of Excellence (817-280-0993) recently purchased eight Dominos Pizza locations in Tarrant County, TX and plans to convert them to Mark of Excellence pizza stores. The company now operates 31 units and is planning additional units in Colleysville, Saginaw, Mansfield and Fort Worth in an attempt to have 95% coverage in Tarrant County.
Rosies Diner plans to open a 1950s-style diner in Monument, CO this month as part of its plan to open 10 to 15 restaurants statewide in the coming years. Four diners are slated to open during 2001, and sites being considered include two locations in Colorado Springs near the Chapel Hills Mall and the World Arena.
