Who's Opening & Where


Ralph’s (310-884-9000) plans to open a 52,000 sq.ft. supermarket on a 3.6-acre site located at the intersection of Long Beach Boulevard and San Antonio Drive in Long Beach, CA.   The company recently purchased the site from Regency Realty Corp. for $8.5 million.

 

Marsh Supermarkets (317-594-2100) plans to open four to six convenience stores in addition

to remodeling and acquiring several sites for future development during 2001.  During its most recent fiscal quarter, the company acquired five supermarkets and three pharmacies in Muncie, IN.

 

Village Inn () expects to open three restaurants during the last quarter of its current fiscal year.  To date, six restaurants have been opened during the current fiscal year.

 

Swifty Serve Corporation (), trading as E-Z Serve, Swifty Serve, Swifty Mart, Country Cupboard and Majik Mart, plans to open 35 convenience stores currently under construction and 49 others under contract to purchase in the coming months. 

 

Guitar Center (818-735-8800) has opened nine stores to date in 2000, and plans to have opened a total of 16 for the year at year’s end.  Two of the remaining seven stores to open are planned for smaller, secondary markets.

 

Lucy’s LaundryMart (310-378-2520) opened its 25th self-service laundry located on West Pico Boulevard in Los Angeles, CA.  The laundries, which also contain a mini-market, children’s amusement area and Blockbuster video outlet, also allows customers to access the internet from six net-ready computer terminals inside the facility. 

 

Wal*Mart (501-273-4000) opened a supercenter located on Dorchester Road in Summerville, SC.  Plans call for at least two additional supercenters to open in the greater Charleston, SC area, with the first slated to open in Goose Creek during the Fall.  The company also plans to open a 200,000 sq.ft. supercenter located on Ferrell Parkway near General Booth Boulevard in Virginia Beach, VA.  The unit will sit on a 15.7-acre parcel and stand adjacent to Home Depot.  In an unrelated development, the Twin Falls, ID city council rejected a request from Wal*Mart to change the zoning on a proposed site for a 205,000 sq.ft. supercenter planned for the intersection of Pole Line Road and Bridgeview Boulevard in Twin Falls, ID.  A second public hearing to discuss alternate sites was approved.  The company also plans to open the first of at least six Wal*Mart Neighborhood Markets planned for the Fort Worth, TX area in Collin County ton of Murphy.  The new concepts stores will range between 42,000 sq.ft. and 50,000 sq.ft. and will contain a pharmacy and possibly gasoline pumps, depending on zoning and the property size.

 

Menard’s (715-876-5911) plans to build a 162,000 sq.ft. home improvement store on 15 acres located along West Newell Road in Danville, IL.  The company recently had its request to rezone the parcel of land for general business accepted.   


IHOP (201-935-6800) plans to open a 4,000 sq.ft. prototype restaurant in the Rochester, NY area.  The company is currently scouting sites in Amherst, Cheektowaga and Clarence, NY for a unit to be located in the Buffalo metropolitan are, which will be slated for an opening during Summer 2001.  The company hopes to open two or more restaurants in each are it locates in order to achieve efficiencies in supplies and advertising costs.

 

Home Depot (770-433-8211) plans to open a 131,848 sq.ft. home and garden center located at the intersection of Kettlemen Lane and Lower Sacramento Road in Lodi, CA.  The company recently opened a unit in Turlock, CA and has plans to open a 129,809 sq.ft home and garden center in Manteca, CA later this month.

 

U.S. Factory Outlets (212-563-3650) opened an anchor store in the Ozark Center Point Place shopping center located in Springdale, AR.  The company plans to expand in the region to better accommodate its strategy of advertising heavily in new areas.

 

Noodles & Company (303-554-1963) recently opened its 13th location last month in Louisville, KY after the company completed a fourth round of equity financing that brought it $3 million.  The funding will be used to pay for the construction of new restaurants in CO, IL, MN and WI.  The company plans to open an additional seven units, including its third in Boulder, CO, and expects to continue its expansion by opening 24 stores during 2001 and 36 during 2002.  Target markets include Washington, D.C., Boston, MA, Seattle, WA, San Francisco, CA and several locations throughout the Midwest.

 

Target (612-304-6099) has not yet secured final approval to build its 170,000 sq.ft. superstore anchor for the 600,000 sq.ft., 72-acre Chapel Ridge power center located on Maysville Road north of Stellhorn Road and west of Interstate 469 in Fort Wayne, IN.  Other anchors Kohl’s, Stein Mart and Lowe’s Home Improvement cannot begin construction on their stores until Super Target receives approval.  Plans had tentatively called for a Summer 2001 opening, but the slowdown is like to push back the opening of all stores.

 

Chick-Fil-A (404-765-8000) plans to open a 3,800 sq.ft. fast-food restaurant at The Galleria located on Dave Lyle Boulevard in Rock Hill, SC.  The unit will be the company’s second in the area.

 

Walgreens (847-940-2500) plans to open a 15,000 sq.ft. pharmacy located on the southeast corner of Yucaipa Boulevard and Fourth Street in Yucaipa, CA.  The company also has plans to open a pharmacy located on County Road 10 in Mounds View, MN.  The opening is pending approval by the Mounds View City Council.

 

TJ Maxx (508-390-3000) plans to open a 50,000 sq.ft. new concept store at Chino Spectrum Marketplace, a 640,000 sq.ft. shopping center located in Chino, CA.  An opening during the fourth quarter of 2000 is planned.  Other tenants include Clothestime, Old Navy, and Bath & Body Works.

 

Kohl’s (262-703-7000) recently purchased 10 acres from Konover Property Trust at Falls Pointe Shopping Center located in Menomonee Falls, WI for the purpose of constructing an 87,000 sq.ft. store.  Another store is slated to open during October in Kernersville, WI.  Fall Pointe Shopping Center is a 185,000 sq.ft. project to be  anchored by Kohl’s and a 36,000 sq.ft. Harris Teeter slated to open during Fall 2001.   


CVS (914-723-1616) plans to open a freestanding pharmacy located between Cortlandt Town Center and Jefferson Valley Mall on Route Six in Mohegan Lake, NY.  A Spring 2001 opening is planned.  An additional 27,000 sq.ft. space is being built adjacent to the property with approvals for a restaurant.  The contact number is for the developer, Goldschmidt & Associates.

 

Linens ‘N’ Things (423-490-8662) will enter the Mobile, AL with the opening of a 36,000 sq.ft. store at Springdale Mall located in Chattanooga, TN.  The mall, which is being developed by CBL & Associates, Inc., is anchored by Burlington Coat Factory, McRae’s Department Store, Toys ‘R’ Us, Staples, Old Navy, and Barnes & Noble.  A June 2001 opening is planned.

 

Jumbo Liquor Outlet () will open a 42,000 sq.ft. store located on North Academy Boulevard in Colorado Springs, Co, making it the largest liquor retailer in the area.  One of the city’s largest liquor retailers, the 30,000 sq.ft. Spirit World, recently closed.

 

Beef O’Brady’s () opened four bar/restaurants in the Tampa Bay, FL area.  The company plans to open two AL locations by year’s end, its first locations outside of FL, and an additional four units during 2001.  After completing this current spate of expansion, the company will operate 50 stores chainwide.

 

Denny’s (864-597-8000) plans to open a retro 1950s-styled diner located on Dibble Street in Torrington, CT.  The  3,544 sq.ft. restaurant will be located adjacent to a 12,500 sq.ft. retail facility.  The opening is part of the company’s plans to expand in the nation’s upper northeast corridor, including CT, MA, NY and RI.

 

Harris Teeter (704-844-3100) plans to open four supermarkets in the Raleigh, NC market in the coming months.  A replacement store for the supermarket located on U.S. 401 will open during Fall 2001 at Sexton Place Shopping Center, while a store at Leesville Town Center located at the intersection of Leesvile and Strickland Roads will open during March 2001.  The company also plans to open a 36,000 sq.ft. at Falls Pointe Shopping Center located at Falls of the Neuse and Durant Roads slated for a Fall 2001 openinf.  Finally, the compny plans to open a unit at Harrison Pointe, a 150,000 sq.ft. shopping center located at the intersection of Maynard Road and North Harrison Avenue in Cary, NC.

 

Natural Wonders (510-252-6600) recently purchased the entire portfolio of 102 World of Science stores for a consideration of $5.45 million.  The company will soon begin converting the stores to the Natural Wonders brand, and the company is considering closing some World of Science stores in the nine markets where the stores compete. 

 

Master Wok (908-241-3138) opened its 70th location in the Lifestyle Cafe section of Fairlane Town Center located just west of Southfield Freeway and north of Michigan Avenbue in Dearborn, MI.  The shopping center is anchored by Saks Fifth Avenue, Hudson’s, Lord & Taylor, JC Penney, Sears  and a 21-screen Star Theater.

 

Panchos Mexican Buffet (817-831-0081) opened two Panchito’s all-you-can-eat Mexican buffet restaurants with a fixed price point in Houston, TX during its last fiscal quarter.
