Who's Opening & WhereClean Rite Cleaners (718-353-4430) opened a 10,000 sq.ft. laundry service superstore on Eastern Parkway near Atlantic Avenue in Brooklyn, NY. The store is the largest in the 37-unit chain. The company took a long-term lease on a 14,000 sq.ft. building formerly housing a garage, and plans to sublet the remain 4,000 sq.ft. Additionally, the company rented two adjacent 15,000 sq.ft. lots it plans to develop as a parking lot capable of holding 90 cars.
Lowes (336-658-4000) purchased a parcel of land adjacent to Oviedo Park Crossing shopping center, a 186,000 sq.ft. center anchored by Ross Dress For Less, Office Max, Michaels and Shoe Carnival located in Oviedo, FL. Linens n Things and T.J, Maxx will open in November, while PETsMART will open next year. Lowes plans to construct a 135,000 sq.ft. home center with a 28,000 sq.ft. garden center, which is slated for an opening during Spring 2001. The company is also planning a store for the Las Cruces, NM market and is reported to be interested in a site located at the intersection of North Main Street and Triviz Drive.
Fashion Bug (215-638-6909) plans to open an 8,000 sq.ft. store at Midtown Shopping Center, a 118,000 sq.ft. center located northwest of U.S. Highway 231 and Main Street in Prattville, AL. The clothing store will occupy a portion of a space formerly housing Winn-Dixie. Burkes Outlet department store will also open a unit at the center, and will occupy an additional 12,000 sq.ft. of the former Winn-Dixie store. Also, Howies Hungry Pizza recently opened a pizza parlor at the center.
Greers (865-458-2046) recently opened a fourth store in the Dayton, TN market. The furniture store chain is selectively seeking expansion opportunities throughout TN in smaller markets of approximately 30,000 residents.
Best Buy (612-995-7049) opened twelve units during its second quarter of its fiscal year 2001, which ended in August. The company plans to open 45 stores during the remainder of the fiscal year, with emphasis in the NY tri-state area. Also, the company will make its first entry into the markets of Seattle, WA and Jackson, MS with openings in the coming six months.
Family Dollar (704-847-6961) opened 158 stores in the final quarter of its fiscal year 2000, bringing its total openings for the year to 406 stores. As previously announced, the company plans to open between 475 and 500 stores during its fiscal year 2001. Costco (425-313-6360) plans to open 22 to 24 units by the end of 2001, which will bring its total number of stores to more than 350.
Kohls (262-703-7000) plans to open 14 stores during the month of October, with three stores in Tulsa, OK, and Long Island, NY, two in Denver, CO, and one store each in Flint MI; Chicago, IL; Detroit, MI; St. Louis, MO; Philadelphia, PA and Winston-Salem, NC.
Sergios Mexican Restaurant (920-731-4933) plans to relocate its unit at Valley Fair Mall in Appleton, WI to the former Piggly Wiggly supermarket building on South Onieda Street on the citys south side.
Silver Diner Inc. (301-770-4187) is pursuing locations throughout the Mid-Atlantic region, and has long-range plans to expand nationwide. The company is currently constructing a diner in the Washington, D.C./Baltimore, MD market.
Sterling Jewelry (330-668-5080) plans to open a Jared The Galleria of Jewelry store at Fox River Mall located at the intersection of College Avenue and Casaloma Drive in Fox Valley, OH. The 5,600 sq.ft. store will front the Barnes & Noble and Bed, Bath & Beyond stores at the center. The company plans to expand its concept nationwide at a rate of approximately 15 stores per year.
Jersey Mikes (732-282-2323) opened its third IN location in the lobby of the College Football Hall of Fame in South Bend. The company also opened its 30th location in OH on State Route 28 in Milford, adjacent to Blockbuster Video. Each unit was a franchise store, and the company, which operates more than 200 units in 14 states, is still franchising.
The Gap (415-952-4400) plans to open a 10,500 sq.ft. clothing store located on Route 30 near Wayne Avenue in Wayne, PA. The site was formerly occupied by Petco. A Fall 2000 opening is scheduled.
Recreational Equipment, Inc. (REI) (253-395-3780) plans to open one of its 10,000 sq.ft. "small format" stores located at the intersection of Clearwater Avenue and Highway 395 in Kennewick, WA during October 2000. The company currently operates 57 stores.
Home Depot (770-433-8211) plans to open a 135,000 sq.ft. store located at the southwest corner of State Highway 135 and Smith Valley Road in Greenwood, IN. Menards, one of its main competitors, plans to build a unit nearby in the coming months.
