Who's Opening & Where


A.C. Moore (856-228-6700) opened stores in Cary, NC; Hyannis, MA and Saratoga Springs, NY in the first quarter of 2001. The company plans 10 to 14 openings in the course of the year. The company operates 41 arts and crafts supply stores in eastern states.

 

Fresh Choice Express (415-474-6100) opened its third unit in TX. The restaurant concept is a smaller version of the Fresh Choice concept that has 46 units in CA, WA and TX.

 

Boscov’s (610-779-2000) has delayed its opening at the Brass Mill Center in Waterbury, CT. The company will take the existing 140,000 sq.ft. anchor space. The company operates 35 stores in five states.

 

Home Depot (770-433-8211) is proceeding with plans to open a 114,000 sq.ft. store on the site of the former Castlegate Hotel in Atlanta, GA. The site located at the intersection of Interstate 75 and Howell Mill Road is still for sale since the developer, Selig Enterprises, let its exclusive contract expire. The company will open a 114,000 sq.ft. store at the Wegmans-Kmart Plaza in West Ellicott, NY.

 

HEB Supermarkets (210-938-8931) will open a 75,000 sq.ft. HEB’s Central Market on Coit Road in Plano, TX. The supermarket will be located just north of State Highway 190.

 

Ruby Tuesday (865-379-5700) will open a 5,100 sq.ft. unit located at the intersection of Virginia 419 and Brambleton Avenue in Roanoke County, VA.

 

Dollar General (615-855-4000) plans to open 600 to 700 stores in fiscal 2002. The company expects a sales increase of 15% to 18% and operates more than 5,000 stores in 25 states.

 

Federated Department Stores (513-579-7905) trading as Bloomingdale’s, The Bon Marche, Burdines, Goldsmith’s, Lazarus, Macy’s, Rich’s and Stern’s will open 11 stores in 2001 including two furniture stores. The company operates more than 400 stores in 33 states.

 

Albertson’s (817-568-3858) will open eight stores in the Oklahoma City, OK market in the next three years. The company will focus on high-end consumers as Wal*Mart is testing its grocery concept Neighborhood Markets in the same area. Albertson’s operates over 2,500 stores in 37 states.

 

Ukrop’s Supermarkets, Inc. (804-379-7300) will open a 12,000 sq.ft. Joe’s Market in the former Rite Aid site on Libbie Avenue in Richmond, VA. The company operates 27 units throughout VA.

Academy Sports & Outdoors (281-579-1555) will open a store located at the intersection of 81st Street and Mingo Road in Tulsa, OK. It will be the company’s second store in the market. Academy operates more than 50 stores in seven states.

 

Belk Department Stores (704-357-1000) will open four stores in 2001. The company plans to open a 48,000 sq.ft. store in Charlotte, NC.

 

Steve Madden Shoes (718-446-1800) will open 10 stores in fiscal 2001. The company operates 65 units.

 

Captian D’s (615-231-2446) is expanding in new and existing markets including Little Rock, AR; Atlanta, GA; Charlotte, NC; Greenville, NC; Greensboro, NC; Raleigh-Durham, NC; Charleston, SC; Columbia, SC; Chattanooga, TN; Knoxville, TN; Memphis, TN; Houston, TX; Denver, CO; Indianapolis, IN; St. Louis, MO and all major cities in FL. The company operates 565 locations in 22 states.

 

Children’s Place Retail Stores, Inc. (201-558-2400) plans to open 120 stores in 2001.The company opened 108 units in 2000 and operates 400 stores in 43 states.

 

Longs Drug Stores (925-210-6763) will open more than 20 locations in fiscal 2002. The company operates 431 stores in the western U.S.

 

Ross Stores, Inc. (510-505-4400) opened two stores in the Atlanta, GA market. The company opened a 32,628 sq.ft. store at Douglasville Pavillion in Douglasville, GA and a 33,400 sq.ft. location at Lawrenceville Market in Lawrenceville, GA. The company plans to open three more stores in the market by fall 2001.

 

Circuit City (804-527-4000) plans 15 to 20 openings in fiscal 2001. The company will also remodel 20 to 25 units and relocate 10 stores. The company expects most of the activity to occur in the third quarter.

 

Ralph’s Grocery Company (310-884-9000) plans to open FoodsCo at Shaw and Marty Streets in Fresno, CA. The company will also open three Ralphs Supermarkets in the market. Stores are planned at the intersection of Herndon and Fowler Avenues in Clovis; Herndon and Brawley Avenues in northwest Fresno and at Champlain and Perrin Avenues in Fresno, CA.

 

Grill Concepts, Inc. (310-820-5559) will open a 6,500 sq.ft. Daily Grill restaurant in San Francisco, CA. The company signed a 10-year lease on the site on Geary Street adjacent to the Handlery Hotel. The company operates 13 units nationwide.

J. Alexander’s Corporation (615-269-1900) will open two restaurants in 2001. The company has sites in Boca Raton, FL and Atlanta, GA. The company currently operates 22 locations in 11 states.

 

AFC Enterprises (770-391-9500) trading as Popeyes Chicken & Biscuits will open three locations in Chattanooga, TN. The first unit will open this month on South Broad Street on the site of a former Bojangles restaurant.

 

Wilsons, The Leather Experts (763-391-4000) plans to open 80 stores in the coming year. The company opened 44 units in 2000 and operates 573 locations nationwide.

 

Apple Computers (408-996-1010) will open a 6,500 sq.ft. store in Aspen Grove, a lifestyle center in Littleton, CO being developed by Poag & McEwen Lifestyle Centers. The company is allegedly close to a similar deal with a New York City-area center. Other locations that the company is reportedly targeting include Palo Alto, CA; Glendale, CA and Chicago, IL.

 

People Magazine (212-522-1212) will not open a retail store and exhibit space in the Time & Life Building in New York City, NY.

 

Lowe’s Home Improvement (336-658-4000) will open a 150,000 sq.ft. store at the intersection of Long Island Expressway and Route 112 in Medford, NY. The unit is scheduled to open later this year.

 

Nordstrom (206-638-2111) will open a 32,000 sq.ft. Nordstrom Rack location at Creekside Town Center in Roseville, CA. The center, developed by Donahue Schriber, is located at the intersection of Highway 65 and Galleria Boulevard, across from the Roseville Galleria. Nordstrom has a full-line store at the Galleria and operates 121 stores nationwide. The company will also open a 35,000 sq.ft. store at the Esplanade Shopping Center in Oxnard, CA. The 490,000 sq.ft. center is on the site of the former Esplanade Mall. Both stores will open fall 2001.

 

Earl Sheib Inc. (310-652-4880) will open a second fleet and truck auto body and paint store in southern CA. The unit is scheduled to open in June and company operates 161 locations nationwide.

 

Huddle House (800-418-9555) will open five units bringing their total openings to 23 for fiscal 2001. The company has 11 additional sites that will open this month. The company operates 360 locations nationwide.
