Costco (425-313-8100) plans to open 14 to 16 locations before September. The company operates 313 wholesale clubs in North America.

 

Carl’s Jr. (714-940-3454) will open a location at the intersection of Soldano and Lohman Roads in Las Cruces, NM. The company operates 929 fast food locations across the western U.S. and Mexico.

 

Vitamin Cottage Natural Food Markets (303-986-4600) will open a 9,400 sq.ft. store on Main Street in Longmont, CO. The 15-unit chain will open the Longmont location in June.

Eateries, Inc. (405-705-5000) has signed a franchising agreement with Cameron Enterprises, Inc. to open Garfield’s Restaurant & Pub location in the Las Vegas, NV market. The company operates 74 locations in 26 states under the Garfield’s Restaurant & Pub, Garcia’s Mexican Restaurant and Pepperoni Grill.

 

Target (612-304-6073) will anchor a 342,525 sq.ft. development in Savanah, GA. The project is being developed by The Sembler Company. Target will also open a store at the Northwest Promenade in Bakersfield, CA.

Big Bowl (312-757-8297) will open a 5,300 sq.ft. location at Tabor Center in Denver, CO. The Asian noodle restaurant chain operates nine locations nationwide.

 

Whitehall Company Jewelers (312-782-6800) plans to open 30 stores in 2001. Seven locations have opened this year and the company operates 350 stores in 36 states in under the Whitehall Co. Jewelers, Lundstrom Jewelers and Marks Brothers Jewelers names.

 

Ultimate Electronics (303-412-2500) plans to open three additional stores in the Phoenix, AZ market and enter the St. Louis, MO market with five stores in fiscal 2001. The company has two Oklahoma City, OK units under construction and three units under construction in St. Louis, MO. The company operates 56 locations under the Ultimate Electronics, SoundTrack and Audio King concepts.

 

Cinema Grill Systems (404-250-9536) will reopen the Summit Park Six theaters in Wheatfield, NY. The theater which is located near the Summit Park Mall will feature the company’s dinner-and-a-movie format. The company plans to open seven to 10 units a month in existing theaters.

 

Red River Roadhouse (814-868-0841) will open three franchised locations in Springfield, VA; Los Angeles, CA and East Lansing, MI.

 

The Dress Barn, Inc. (914-369-4500) plans to open 30 stores and closing 15 underperforming units during the remainder of fiscal 2001. The company is also converting its single-brand stores to combo stores featuring both the Dress Barn and Dress Barn Woman lines. The company operates 701 locations nationwide.

 

Longs Drug Stores (925-210-6763) plans to open 20 stores in the remainder of the fiscal year. The company will also close 15 poorly performing stores. The 431-unit chain operates in six western states.

 

U.S. Factory Outlets, Inc. (212-563-3650) will open a 65,000 sq.ft. store in half of the former J.C. Penney store at Gateway Shopping Center in Jacksonville, FL. The center is located at the intersection of Interstate 95 and Norwood Avenue.

 

Albertson’s Inc. (714-739-6738) plans to open 80 combination stores and 75 drug stores in 2001. The company also plans to open 105 fuel centers during the year. The company operates food retailers, fuel centers and drug stores totaling 2,533 units in 36 states.

 

Stuart Anderson’s (650-949-6422) operates 105 restaurants under the trade names Black Angus and Cattle Company in 13 states. The company plans 45 openings in the coming five years.

 

Fred’s Inc. (901-365-8880) opened 32 stores in fiscal 2001 to bring its total units to 350 operating. The new stores accounted for a 10% increase in selling space. The discount general merchandise retailer plans a 8% to 12% increase in selling space for fiscal 2002.

 

Giant Food Stores (717-249-4000) will open a 55,000 sq.ft. store at Windsor Commons Shopping Center in Windsor Township, PA. The store is scheduled to open in June in the center that is located across Route 24 from Cape Horn Shopping Center. Radio Shack, Dollar Tree and Marcello’s Pizza will also tenant Windsor Commons Shopping Center.

 

Hot Topic, Inc. (626-839-4681) plans to open 65 Hot Topic stores and six Torrid stores in fiscal 2001. The company opened 62 stores in fiscal 2000 rasing the total count to 274 units.

 

Krispy Kreme Doughnuts, Inc. (336-725-2981) has signed a franchising agreement to allow Freedom Rings, LLC to open 16 locations over the next five years in Philadelphia, PA, NJ and DE. The company retains a 70% interest in the project. The company will open two Wichita, KS openings in the coming 18 months. The first will be located at the intersection of Rock Road and Central Avenue, with the second at 21st Street and Tyler Road. Krispy Kreme operates 177 units in 28 states.

 

Kohl’s (262-703-7000) plans to open 60 stores in 2001 primarily in the northeast and TX. The company plans 70 openings in 2002. The department store chain plans to move into the southwest and Los Angeles merkets in 2003. The company currently operates 320 stores in 26 states.

 

Charming Shoppes (215-638-6909) plans to open 110 to 120 stores in fiscal 2001. The estimate is down from an initial 140 store projection. The company operates 1,200 stores under the brand names Fashion Bug, Fashion Bug Plus, Catherine’s and Added Dimensions.

 

Rent-A-Center (972-801-1200) will open a 4,200 sq.ft. store located on Blue Lakes Boulevard North in Twin Falls, ID. The company plans to have 4,000 stores by 2005. The company operates over 2,400 locations.

 

Publix (863-688-1188) will open a 61,690 sq.ft. store at the intersection of Peachland and Loveland Boulevards in Port Charlotte, FL. The store will replace the 45,000 sq.ft. location at Peachland Promenade.

 

Bennigan’s (972-588-5645) will open a 6,634 sq.ft. location on St. Patrick’s Drive in St. Charles, MD. The restaurant will join Eckerd Pharmacy and Chick-Fil-A in a new retail corridor.

 

IKEA (610-878-2220) will not open a 320,000 sq.ft. store on Elston Avenue in Chicago, IL. The mayor’s office has rejected the company and developer Warren Baker’s plan for the store citing traffic concerns for the intersection of Elston and Armitage Avenues.

 

Bed, Bath and Beyond (908-688-0888) will open a 24,892 sq.ft. store at Heritage Plaza in Murdock, FL. The site was initially intended for Old Navy, but the apparel retailer chose to tenant the Port Charlotte Town Center. The company will open a 27,300 sq.ft. store former Kohl’s Food Store at Southridge Plaza in Milwaukee, WI. The store is scheduled to open by the end of May. Bed, Bath and Beyond operates 311 stores nationwide.

 

Diamond.com (888-342-6663) will open its flagship store in Manhattan, NY. The company had $30 million in internet sales last year and has international diamond trading company, The Steinmetz Company as a majority owner.

 

Chick-Fil-A (404-765-8000) will open 61 units in 2001, 55 of those will be freestanding units. The 960-unit chain operates about half its locations in malls. An outparcel freestanding location will open at Creekwood Crossing located on State Road 70 just west of Interstate 75 in East Manatee, FL.

 

One Price Clothing Stores (864-486-6210) will open seven stores and remodel or relocate 10 stores in 2001. The apparel store chain opened 44 stores in 2000. The company operates 641 locations in 30 states.

 

Shoe Carnival (812-867-4105) plans to open 15 or 16 stores in 2001. The 166-unit chain plans to resume a 20% annual growth rate once economic conditions improve.

 

Whataburger, Inc. (361-878-0649) has granted franchisee rights to Houston Food Group, Inc. to open five locations from TX to FL along the Interstate 10 corridor. The units are to open within the next two years.
