Who's Opening & Where


Burlington Coat Factory (609-387-7800) plans 16 new stores, six relocations and the remodeling of 16 stores for fiscal 2001. The company opened 15 locations in the past nine months and operates 295 stores in 42 states.

 

Dillard’s (501-376-5200) will open seven stores in 2001. The locations are planned for NC, TX, FL, AZ and GA. The company operates 350 stores nationwide.

 

Brookstone, Inc. c/o PP Real Estate (603-577-8104) will open 15 to 20 locations in 2001. The company will also test a new format. Brookstone operated 223 stores in 38 states.

 

Weekends Only Furniture Outlet (314-965-3525) opened its fourth store at the site of the former HQ on Commerce Lane in Belleville, IL. It is the company’s first location in IL.

 

Fred Meyer (503-797-3550) will not open a 140,000 sq.ft. store planned for Gig Harbor, WA. Local groups had complained about the proposed Gateway Pavilion, a 30-acre, $30 million mixed-use center located on Point Fosdick Drive that Fred Meyer was to anchor. The center’s developers have pulled its petition from City Council.

 

Kelsey’s (905-842-6795) plans to open 12 Montana’s Cookhouse Saloon locations in the U.S. by the end of 2002. The Canadian-based company operates 31 units including restaurants at Quaker Crossing in Orchard Park, NY and a location in Tonawanda, NY. The company plans expansion in the Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse and Albany, NY markets as well as in MI, FL, AZ and NM.

 

Cache (212-575-3200) plans to open 10 stores in its Cache and Lillie Rubin concepts. The company opened eight of each concept in 2000 and operates 215 stores nationwide.

 

Saks Incorporated (901-937-2113) will open a 140,000 sq.ft. Parisian store to anchor The Avenue Chenal in Little Rock, AR. The 340,000 sq.ft. center, developed by Cousins Properties Incorporated, is scheduled to open in fall 2002.

 

United Retail Group (201-909-2192) plans to open 50 large-format AVENUE stores in fiscal 2001. The company opened 59 stores in fiscal 2000 and operates 523 stores nationwide.

 

McDonald’s Corporation (630-623-3000) opened its new McDonalds with the Diner Inside concept at a company-owned location in Kokomo, IN. The restaurant will offer the chain’s regular menu and meatloaf, chicken entrees and other home-style items.

Mayor’s Jewelers c/o Arthur Weiner Enterprises (305-932-6202) plans seven new stores in fiscal 2001. Openings are planned for Chicago, IL; Scottsdale, AZ; two in Dallas, TX and three in FL. The company opened 10 stores in fiscal 2000 and operates 37 locations in FL, GA, IL, MI, NV and TX.

 

Leo’s Restaurant (203-264-9190) opened a 1,800 sq.ft. location at Country Plaza in Cheshire, CT. The four-unit chain specializes in breakfast and lunch and plans to open additional units in the Brookfield/New Milford, CT market.

 

Garden Ridge (713-772-6262) will open a 110,000 sq.ft. store at the site of the former HQ located just off Battlefield Boulevard in Chesapeake, VA. The site is near the Wal*Mart/Sam’s Club development and will be the company’s 37th location.

 

Kuebler’s Furniture (530-365-7644) may open at the 50,208 sq.ft. former Best Products at Delta Oaks Shopping Center site in Eugene, OR. The four-unit chain operates stores in CA and OR.

 

Wawa (804-796-5279) will open four stores in the Virginia Beach, VA market. The company will also open in Williamsburg, VA and plans expansion in cities across the Hampton Roads area.

 

CineMagic Theaters (763-537-5540) will open a 15-screen complex located north of 19th Street Northwest and west of West Circle Drive in Rochester, MN. The theater will be the fourth location for the company. The theater is scheduled to open in 2003.

 

Jerry’s Home Improvement (541-689-1911) will open a 135,000 sq.ft. store located near the intersection of 23rd Street and Olympic Streets in Springfield, OR. The location will be the company’s second.

 

The Bombay Company (817-870-1847) plans to expand its retail square footage by 30% over the next three years. The 431-unit chain is looking to open stores and relocate to larger locations.

 

Medicap Pharmacy (515-224-8400) will open a store at Falls Village Shopping Center located on Falls of the Neuse Road in Raleigh, NC. The company operates 198 units nationwide.

 

Urban Outfitters (215-665-0060) plans six to eight new stores in fiscal 2002. The company has opened Urban Retail stores in Providence, RI and Dallas, TX in this year after opening five Urban Retail and six Anthropologie stores last year. The company operates 70 stores nationwide.

Media Arts Group, Inc. (408-922-1564) opened its first three Masters of Light Galleries in Corte Madera, CA; Santa Barbara, CA and Chapel Hill, NC. The company plans 20 independently owned and operated locations in the coming year. The company operates 360 locations nationwide.

 

Ames (860-257-2000) opened five stores in four states to bolster its market presence in the midwest and midatlantic regions. The new stores are located at the Scottsdale Shopping Center in Chicago, IL; North Park Mall in Villa Park, IL; Village Shopping Center in Gary, IN; Southwest Square Shopping Center in Columbus, OH and Brunswick Shopping Center in North Brunswick, NJ. The company opened 23 stores last year and operates 447 locations in the midwest, midatlantic and northeast.

 

Safeway (925-467-3000) will open a 56,156 sq.ft. store at Mount Airy Shopping Center in Mount Airy, MD. The store will replace the current 35,900 sq.ft. unit and involve the demolition of three buildings. The company will put a new prototype store on the site scheduled to open in the first quarter of 2002. Great Clips, Mt. Airy Studio of Dance and Tip Top Nails will relocate to space on the drive lane that connects the center to Wal*Mart.

 

Wal*Mart (501-273-4000) may open a store at Frog Mortar Creek Shopping Center in Bowleys Quarters, MD.

 

The J. Jill Group c/o GCD Consultants (781-466-8200) opened a 5,000 sq.ft. store at Topanga Plaza in Los Angeles, CA. The 24-unit women’s apparel retailer plans to open 25 locations in 2001.

 

Discount Auto Parts, Inc. (863-687-9226) will add a total of 35 stores in fiscal 2001. The company has opened 26 stores and closed four through its first three quarters. The company operates 665 locations nationwide.

 

Electronics Boutique c/o Arthur Weiner Enterprises (305-932-6202) plans up to 175 new stores in the U.S. and Canada, as well as Australia and New Zealand. The company operates 746 stores worldwide.

 

Desert Moon (845-267-3300) open a restaurant at the Bradlee Shopping Center located on King Street in Alexandria, VA. The company is planning a unit in Bethesda, MD that is scheduled to open fall 2001. The company operates 11 locations in NY, PA, NJ and CT.
