Who's Opening & Where

The Cato Corporation (704-554-8510) is on track to open 85 stores in 2001. The popular-priced apparel retailer recently opened five stores in the southern and midstates. The sites are located in Danville KY; Whitesburg KY; LaVale MD; Horn Lake MS and Kernersville NC. The company operates 877 stores in 23 states.

Wingstop (972-686-6500) will open 47 locations over the next few years. The quick-serve restaurant chain specializing in chicken wings operates 28 units in 10 states. One franchisee will open a location in Tempe AZ.

Factory 2-U Stores Inc. (858-637-4126) has cut its projected new store openings for this year from 61 to between 46 and 53 openings. The discount apparel chain operates 257 locations nationwide.

Nordstrom’s Inc. (206-373-4085) will open a 36 000 sq.ft. Nordstrom Rack at Ontario Mills in Ontario CA. The store is scheduled to open in spring 2002. The company has three other CA openings planned for the concept in Roseville San Francisco and Oxnard. The discount and closeout apparel chain operates 37 stores nationwide.

Hot Topic Inc. (626-839-4681) opened eight Hot Topic stores in June including its first location in AR. The company remains on track to open 65 stores in 2001. The chain operates 309 Hot Topic stores and six Torrid stores in 47 states.

Dollar General (615-855-4000) expects to open 150 to 175 stores in the third quarter of fiscal 2001 which began August 3. The general merchandiser plans to open 600 to 700 stores for the year. The chain operates over 5 200 stores in 27 states.

Costco (425-313-8100) plans to open 22 to 24 wholesale warehouse clubs including two to three relocations before the end of 2001. The company operates 363 stores worldwide.

Target Corporation (612-304-6073) may open a store at the Crest Plaza in South Whitehall Township PA. Pennsylvania Real Estate Investment Trust submitted plans to raze the center except for the Weis Supermarket and build for the big box retailer. The discount store operates 978 locations nationwide.

Saks Incorporated (205-940-4000) acquired two former Montgomery Ward’s locations that the company will reopen over the next two years. The department store chain acquired the 91 400 sq.ft. space at Apache Mall in Rochester MN. A Carson Pirie Scott store is expected to open in fall 2002. The company will open a Younkers store at Bay Park Square in Ashwaubenon WI. The 148 900 sq.ft. store is scheduled to open in late 2002 or early 2003. The company operates 355 stores under the brands Saks Fifth Avenue Saks Off 5th Parisian Proffitt’s McRae’s Younkers Herberger’s Carson Pirie Scott Bergner’s and Boston Store.

Cinnaroll Bakeries Limited (403-255-4556) signed two 25-location franchise deals for Cinnzeo Bakery in CA and TX. The company entered the U.S. earlier this year signing a six-unit deal in FL. Ecco Food the FL franchisee has three openings planned by the end of the year at The Falls in Miami Wellington Green in Boca Raton and Coral Square Mall in Coral Gables. The franchise agreement for CA was signed with H&CCO Inc. The company plans to open its first unit by year end and is targeting regional centers from San Diego to San Jose CA. Andrade Enterprises will oversee the TX locations. The first store in TX is slated for the River Center Mall in San Antonio and will open by the end of the year. The franchisees plan five units in San Antonio before branching out to the rest of the state.

Home Depot (770-433-8211) plans 200 openings over the coming 12 months. The home improvement retailer operates over 1 200 units nationwide.

Ruby Tuesday Inc. (865-379-5700) plans to open 45 to 50 company-owned restaurants and 30 to 35 franchised locations in fiscal 2002. The company operates 537 restaurants 374 of which are company-owned.

Total Entertainment Restaurant Corp. (972-219-2657) opened units in Fort Worth TX and Nashville TN. One additional site is under construction and seven leases have been finalized. The company operates 40 locations under the names Fox and Hound English Pub & Grille Bailey’s Sports Grille and Bailey’s Pub & Grille.

Linens ‘N’ Things (630-571-5692) plans to open 60 units in the coming 12 months. The home furnishing and accessories retailer operates 290 stores nationwide.

Longs Drug Stores (925-210-6763) will open four stores in CA and two units in Colorado Springs CO. The drug store chain plans 20 openings in the current fiscal year. The company operates 431 stores in the western states.

Borders Books & Music (734-477-1100) will open a 23 000 sq.ft. store in Oxnard CA. The site is located on West Esplanade Drive and is expected to open in October. The company will also open a 23 270 sq.ft. store in St. Peters MO. The site is located on Mid Rivers Mall Drive and is also scheduled to open in October. Both stores will feature a Borders Cafe Expresso. The company operates 340 Borders superstores nationwide.

99 Cents Only Stores (323-980-8145) plans to open eight stores in the third quarter of 2001 and five stores in the fourth quarter. The company opened 13 units in the first half of 2001. The one-price retail chain operates 110 stores in CA NV and AZ.

Jo-Ann Stores Inc. (330-656-2600) opened a 45 000 sq.ft. Jo-Ann etc store at Foothill Ranch Town Center in Foothill Ranch CA. The art and crafts chain will also open a 30 000 sq.ft. location at Silverdale Plaza in Silverdale WA. The company plans to open seven superstores in 2001 and operates 63 Jo-Ann etc stores nationwide.

Sonic Restaurants Inc. (405-280-7654) acquired a one-acre parcel at the intersection of Holland and Rosemont Roads in Virginia Beach VA. The quick-serve drive-in chain operates over 2 290 restaurants nationwide of which 319 are company-owned.
