Who's Opening And Where

IKEA (800-434-4532) plans to open a 250 000 sq.ft. store in Somerville MA. Plans call for a footprint of 160 000 sq.ft. and a 90 000 sq.ft. mezzanine. The company operates more than 100 home furnishing stores throughout the U.S. IKEA also proposed a 320 000 sq.ft. location on a 10-acre parcel near University Avenue and Highway 101 in East Palo Alto CA however the home furnishings chain encountered opposition from area residents and the proposal was not approved by the city council. IKEA operates 139 stores in 22 countries.

Wal*Mart (501-273-4000) expects to open a 204 184 sq.ft. Superstore on a 30-acre tract in Valrico FL during Spring 2002. The discount store will be built adjacent to a Home Depot at South Road 60 and Mount Carmel Road. Wal*Mart will be joined on the parcel by Goodwill Industries-Suncoast which plans to open a 25 000 sq.ft. thrift shop next door. Wal*Mart also plans to open a 183 922 sq.ft. location on 19 acres in Los Lunas CA by early 2003. Additionally Wal*Mart (800-925-6278) may open a location at the former St. Thomas housing project in New Orleans LA. The company operates more than 3 500 discount stores nationwide.

OfficeMax Inc. (800-283-7674) plans to open 15 to 20 stores in 2002. The office supply company operates 991 locations in 49 states. The company has denied rumors that it’s closing 23 stores in Atlanta GA.

Nike (949-642-6363) recently opened a 6 000 sq.ft. NIKE-goddess a women’s only apparel store in Newport Beach CA. A second location is slated to open in West Hollywood CA during March. The company operates 13 NikeTown stores throughout the U.S. including three in CA.

Albertsons (817-568-3858) may open a 57 000 sq.ft. store off Bee Cave Road in Rollingwood TX. The grocery store would anchor a 110 000 sq.ft. shopping center that also would include 125 000 sq.ft. of office space. The company operates more than 2 500 locations nationwide.

Filene’s (617-348-7156) expects to open a two-story 140 000 sq.ft. store at the Searstown Mall on Route 2 and Commercial Road in Leominster MA. The store will replace Bradlees and will be one of three anchors joining Sears and JCPenney.

The Buckle Inc. (308-236-8491) plans to open 12 to 16 locations in fiscal 2002 following the 24 stores the men’s and women’s apparel and accessory company opened in 2001. The company operates 298 locations in 36 states.

Kroger LP (513-762-4214) plans to open a 55 000 sq.ft. grocery store in Short Pump VA during Summer 2002. The site located at 11280 West Broad Street is the former site of a Homeplace. Kroger operates 10 locations in the Richmond VA metropolitan area and has one under construction in Mechanicsville VA.

McDonald’s (615-370-9020) expects to open a location at Pueblo West Safeway Shopping Center in Pueblo West CO and a location in Colorado Springs CO. The Colorado Springs restaurant will be co-branded with a Texaco and is expected to open this month. McDonald’s also is planning seven additional sites in CO.

Famous Dave’s of America Inc. (952-294-1300) expects to open eight to 10 company-owned restaurants and 12 to 15 franchised restaurants in 2002.

Triumph Brewing Company (609-924-7855) is proposing a location at 201 South State Street in Newtown PA at the former American Billiards location. The company operates one location in Princeton NJ.

Dick’s Sporting Goods (412-788-6066) plans to open a 30 000 sq.ft. store at Dulles Town Crossing in April the company’s first location in the Washington DC metropolitan area. By year’s end the sporting good’s chain will operate 126 locations in 24 states.

Starbucks Corporation (206-318-7806) plans to open at least 1 200 locations in fiscal 2002 including at least 525 company-operated stores and 300 licensed locations in North America. The coffee house chain expects to have 10 000 stores operating by fiscal year end 2005.

Mothers Work Inc. (215-873-2214) plans to open approximately 60 locations in 2002. The maternity apparel chain trading as Motherhood Maternity A Pea in the Pod iMaternity MotherTime and Dan Howard operates 948 locations nationwide including 816 stores and 132 leased departments.

Kohl’s (262-703-7000) plans to open 70 locations in fiscal 2002 including the company’s entry into the Houston TX Boston MA and Nashville TN markets. The discount department store chain operates 382 sites mainly in the Midwest and Mid-Atlantic states.

CVS (401-765-1500) expects to open an 11 000 sq.ft. pharmacy on 1.2 acres of land situated on southeast Merrill Road and University Boulevard in Jacksonville FL. The company also is considering opening locations in Arlington FL.

Best Buy (952-947-2000) plans to open a 30 000 sq.ft. location in Muncie IN during Spring 2002. Nearby competition includes Circuit City and H.H. Gregg. The electronics chain operates 473 stores in 42 states. The company also plans to open sites in Bloomington and Kokomo IN.

Dierbergs (636-532-8884) expects to open a location at the Green Mount Crossing shopping center located at the Interstate 64 interchange at North Green Mount Road in Shiloh MO during July 2003. The supermarket will be part of a 121 4000 sq.ft. development.

GNC (888-462-2548) plans to open 400 franchise stores in Canada over the next five years. The nutritional supplement company operates 127 corporate locations in 10 provinces and more than 5 300 retail outlets throughout the U.S.

Tutor Time (888-678-4631) is proposing a location on the north side of the Grand River on Grand Oaks Drive in Genoa Township MI. Town officials have concerns about zoning restrictions and traffic safety at the site. The company operates day-care centers in 25 states and has 14 locations in MI.

Ann Taylor Stores Corporation (212-541-3318) expects to open seven Ann Taylor stores and 38 Ann Taylor Loft locations in 2002. The ladies apparel chain operates 532 sites in 42 states and Washington DC including 341 Ann Taylor stores 160 Ann Taylor Loft stores 18 Ann Taylor Loft Outlet stores and 13 Ann Taylor Factory stores.

Target (612-304-6073) plans to open a 125 000 sq.ft. location on a 13-acre parcel at the corner of Route 4 and Third Avenue Extension in East Greenbush NY. The freestanding Target will be an addition to the Shoppes at Greenbush Commons a shopping center anchored by Home Depot Staples and Applebee’s Neighborhood Grill & Bar. The site is the discount chain’s fourth store in the Capital Region and could open by late 2002. The company also is proposing a location in Natomas CA but is facing resistance from residents.

Applebee’s Neighborhood Grill & Bar (913-967-4173) is proposing a 5 000 sq.ft. location at the former Yankee Diner in Bellevue WA. The standalone restaurant would be located at 13856 Bel-Red Road which is part of the Safeway and Staples-anchored Evergreen Village shopping center. The location would be the second Applebee’s on the Eastside. The company operates nearly 1 300 franchise and company-owned restaurants in 49 states.

Kmart (248-643-1000) plans to open a location on Brentwood Road in Washington DC. The discount department store chain operates more than 2 200 sites nationwide.

Krispy Kreme (336-725-2981) opened a location next to Famous Dave’s in Maple Grove MN last month. The donut chain plans to open five more locations in MN next year.

Pacific Sunwear of California Inc. (714-701-4063) expects to open 75 stores in 2002 and expand or relocate 25 to 30 stores. The teen apparel retailer operates 708 locations.
