ClosingsSears, Roebuck & Co. (847-286-2500) will close four department stores in Homestead, FL; Owings Mills, MD; Scottsdale, AZ and Voorhees, NJ. The company will close 53 NTB National Tire & Battery stores and 30 hardware stores mainly in metropolitan areas. The hardware stores are switching to a larger format, from 20,000 sq.ft. to 40,000 sq.ft. The company operates 860 department stores and 2,100 specialty stores.
Shoneys (615-231-2446) closed its Jefferson Avenue location in Newport News, VA. The restaurant had lost parking spaces in street widenings and was not as profitable as the divisions other six stores.
Jones Stores Inc. (910-653-4001 ext. 211) will close its 38 stores operating in NC and SC. The general merchandise store chain decided to close because no younger family members were interested in the business and the company wants to lease its property.
Dawahares (859-278-0422 ext. 3) will close its 19,000 sq.ft. store at the Lexington Mall in Lexington, KY. The company will open a store at Hamburg Place in Lexington, KY during October. The 27-unit apparel chain will also open a store in Maysville, KY during 2001.
Stage Stores Inc. (800-579-2302) will close an additional 121 stores to those already included in the companys asset restructuring plan in U.S. Bankruptcy Court. The company trades under the Stage, Bealls and Palais Royal brands and will operate 348 stores in 14 states after the closures. The company has retained the Ozer Group (781-707-4200) to handle the property distribution from the closings.
Avado Brands (706-342-4552) trading as Don Pablos will close its unit at the Delaware Consumer Square in Buffalo, NY. The company will also close locations in Erie, PA, West Mifflin, PA and Dallas, TX. The casual Mexican restaurant chain operates 135 units in 22 states.
