Who's Opening & Where


Nalu’s (661-322-3377) opened an 800 sq.ft. store on F Street in Bakersfield, CA. The surf-style clothing retailer focuses on the younger (4-to-12 year old) male market.

 

Uno Restaurant Corporation (617-323-9200) has signed franchising agreements to open over 35 units in the next seven years. The company will franchise 10 stores in the Carolinas and another 10 in Southern NJ and Philadelphia. Units are also planned in PA; Richmond, VA; Saratoga, NY; Scottsdale, AZ and Puerto Rico.

 

Curves for Women (254-399-9285) opened its ninth location in the Omaha, NE market at Nebraska Crossings. The health clubs occupy between 1,000 sq.ft. and 3,000 sq.ft. and allow no men or children. The chain operates 20 units in NE, 49 in IA and over 1,000 nationwide.

 

Sara Lee (336-519-8471) trading as Inner Self will open a store at Crabtree Valley Mall in Raleigh, NC. The unit will open this month at the site of the former Fine’s store.

 

L.L. Bean (207-865-4761) will open a store in Columbia, MD during May. The outdoor gear retailer has New York City locations set to open in 2002 and plans stores along the eastern seaboard.

 

Ikea (610-834-0180 ext. 5211) plans to open a store in Pleasanton, CA but has not determined a site. The company is opening a unit in East Paolo Alto, CA and has a store in Emeryville, CA. The openings would give the home furnishings retailer three San Francisco area stores.

 

Aaron Rents (404-231-0011) will reopen 27 former Heilig-Meyers locations after buying their leases in a bankruptcy auction. The company opened 90 locations in 2000, operating 545 stores in 42 states. The company will open at Midtown Shopping Center in Pueblo, CO. The freestanding site is on Fourth Street.

 

Reeds Jewelers (910-350-3100) opened five stores in the third quarter of fiscal 2001 to bring its total to 120 stores in regional malls in 19 states. The openings took place in Fort Myers, FL; Laredo, TX; Austin, TX; Oxford, AL and Baltimore, MD.

 

Beauty Supply Warehouse (518-436-4206) will open in the former Drome Sound Music Store site on Central Avenue in Albany, NY. The company will close its other Central Avenue store.

 

Barnes & Noble (817-424-2195) will open a 25,000 sq.ft. store at Columbia Mall in Columbia, MO in late 2001. The store will open in the former Mall 4 Theater site.

Rave Motion Pictures Theater (617-350-1500) opened theaters at Festival Plaza in Montgomery, AL and Dallas, TX. The new chain plans spring openings in Pensacola, FL and Port St. Lucie, FL and Birmingham, AL, Fort Wayne, IN and Chattanooga, TN in the fall. The company has $50 million in equity and no bank debt according to company officials.

 

Winn-Dixie (334-240-6200) opened a 52,000 sq.ft. store on West Tharpe Street in Tallahassee, FL. The store replaced the location on West Tennessee Street and has a new look, including the elimination of food courts. The company will hold their lease on West Tennessee until it expires.

 

Bon Marche (206-506-6000) will open a 65,000 sq.ft. freestanding store at Northside Center in Helena, MT. The location is the first power center for the 42-unit department store chain.

 

Discount Auto Parts, Inc. (941-687-9226) plans to add 40 stores in fiscal 2001. The 658-unit chain opened 56 stores in fiscal 2000.

 

Stater Brothers Markets (909-783-5000) will open a 43,235 sq.ft. supermarket at Chino Parkway and Grand Avenue in Chino Hills, CA. The store is set to open in Fall 2001. The 155-unit chain operates in southern CA.

 

Gander Mountain (952-830-8700) will open a 31,000 sq.ft. store near the West Manchester Mall in York County, PA. The hunting and fishing supply retailer operates 20 units nationwide.

 

CKE Restaurants (714-774-5796) operating as Carl’s Jr., Hardee’s and Taco Bueno opened 19 restaurants chain wide in the third quarter of fiscal 2001. The company operates over 3,000 units worldwide.

 

Skate Palace (864-573-5922) will open in Boiling Springs, SC. The 23,000 sq.ft. facility is the second in the chain.

 

Bob’s Discount Furniture (860-645-3200) may open in the former Caldor anchor spot at Norwichtown Mall in Norwich, CT. The company is in negotiations for the 87,000 sq.ft. site.

 

NBTY, Inc. (631-567-9500) purchased five stores in the Buffalo, NY area that were operated by Manufactures and Traders Trust Company. The vitamin stores sell products that NBTY also manufactures.

 

Georgia Carolina Foods, Inc. (706-364-8860) doing business as Krystal opened a fourth restaurant in the Augusta, GA area. The company plans three openings in the coming 18 months.

Stein Mart (904-346-1500) plans a 31,000 sq.ft. store at Georgetown Square in Fort Wayne, IN. The store will open in late 2001 on the site of the former Keltsch Pharmacy.

 

Walgreen’s (847-940-2500) opened 126 stores in the three months ending November 20, 2000, setting a company record for a three-month span. The 3,259-unit drugstore chain plans 500 openings in fiscal year 2001 and will stay at that level for the foreseeable future according to company executives.

 

Muvico (954-564-6550) is considering sites at two new centers in the Atlanta, GA trade area. Discover Mills is located at Interstate 85 and Sugarloaf Parkway in Gwinnett County, plans to open in the fall, and has anchor agreements with Off 5th/Saks Fifth Avenue, Bass Pro Shops Outdoor World, F.Y.E. For Your Entertainment and Jillian’s Billiard Cafe. The 11-theater chain may also open at The Mall at Stonecrest in Lithonia, GA which plans a theater but has not entered into an operator agreement.

 

Caribou Coffee (888-227-4268) plans to open more stores in Atlanta, GA after Crescent Capital Investment Inc. bought a majority stake in the company. Besides Atlanta, the 149-unit chain operates in Minneapolis/St. Paul, MN; Chicago, IL; Columbus, OH; Cleveland, OH; Charlotte, NC; Raleigh, NC and Detroit, MI.

 

Market Broiler Management, Inc. (909-682-9850) trading as Market Broiler will open a 10,500 sq.ft. unit at Ontario Mills in Ontario, CA. The restaurant will open in one half of the former UltraScreen Theater. The center is also negotiating with the Improv Comedy Club which would open its 11th club at the former American Wilderness Experience.

 

Kohl’s (262-703-7000) has talked with municipal officials in the CA cities of Anaheim, Ventura, Temecula and Corona about putting stores in their cities. The company is rumored to want to open 35 stores in Southern CA during the coming 36 months.

 

Proctor & Gamble (513-983-1100) doing business as Culinary Sol, opened a cooking school and store in the Cincinnati, OH. The store will sell oils, spices and sauces and serves as a testing ground for new company products.

 

Home Depot (770-433-8211) will open on 15.39 acres at Rye Canyon Road and Newhall Ranch Road in Valencia, CA. The 135,000 sq.ft. store will open in November.
