Who's Opening & Where


Family Dollar Stores (704-847-6961) opened 138 stores, expanded or relocated 46 units and renovated 51 stores in the first quarter of fiscal 2001. The company plans 500 openings for fiscal 2001.

 

Dick’s Sporting Goods (412-809-0100) plans to open 20 stores in 2001. The 100-unit sporting goods chain is also seeking to expand its Pittsburgh headquarters.

 

Delhaize America, Inc. (704-633-8250) trading as Food Lion, Hannaford Bros. and Kash n’ Karry plans to open 44 stores in 2001. Food Lion will brand 37 of these, Kash n’ Karry will have five openings and Hannaford two. The company operates 1,420 stores in the eastern U.S.

 

Giant Foods (717-249-4000) will open a 55,000 sq.ft. store opposite the Shrewsbury Commons in Shrewsbury Township, PA. The site is located at Route 851 and Airy Road and will anchor a strip center developed by Mid-Atlantic Realty Trust.

 

Applebee’s (913-967-4173) plans to open three CT locations by August. The units are being placed in Orange, Newington and Mansfield Depot. Applebee’s operates 1,281 restaurants in 49 states.

 

Bi-Lo (864-234-8708 ext. 103) will open a store on a seven-acre tract at Dayton Boulevard and Morrison Springs Road in Chattanooga, TN. The site is the former Red Bank Elementary School. The supermarket chain operates 280 units in NC, SC, GA, TN and AL.

 

Pier 1 Imports (817-878-8000) will open 35 stores in the next six months. The company operates over 800 units worldwide.

 

Banana Republic (949-719-0829) will open a 6,600 sq.ft. store at Valley River Center in Eugene, OR. The location is a former Limited store. The company will also open an outlet store in Bend, OR.

 

Costco (425-313-6360) will not open a 150,000 sq.ft. store on Los Osos Valley Road in San Luis Obispo, CA due to a city ordinance passed by City Council that limits to 5% the amount of floor space that a "big-box" retailer can devote to groceries. The store normally covers about 40% of its area with groceries. The membership wholesale club had planned to open in early 2003. The company operates 258 units nationwide.

 

Old Navy (949-719-0829) will open a 21,700 sq.ft. store at Broadway Commons in Rochester, NY. The 520-unit chain will locate between Bed Bath & Beyond and Michaels. Sportsmart will also open in the center. The 122-unit sporting goods chain will place a 33,200 sq.ft. store on the southern end of the center.

Lowe’s Home Centers, Inc. (336-658-4000) will not open adjacent to Southpoint Mall in Durham, NC. The company sold the land back to Midland Atlantic Development who they had paid $3 million in November. The company will open in the redeveloped Tower Mall in Portsmouth, VA. The 700,000 sq.ft. center is planned in two phases with Lowes being one of the first retailers to commit to the site. The company will open a 150,000 sq.ft. store at NorthPointe Shopping Center in Modesto, CA. The store will have a 28,000 sq.ft. garden center adjacent and will sell appliances and unfinished furniture.

 

A.C. Moore Arts & Crafts (856-228-6700) plans to open 10 to 14 stores and relocate two others in fiscal 2001. The company will open four stores in the first quarter. The 49-unit chain operates in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic regions.

 

Panera Bread Company (314-918-7779) has signed agreements to open 44 franchised units over the next several years. The Daland Corporation will open 22 stores in Palm Beach and Broward Counties of FL. Randy Simon and Howard Wilkins will add 10 stores to their units in KS and MO. Jim Magers and Jay Burchfield will open four stores in Oklahoma City, OK and will add eight units in the Dallas/Fort Worth, TX area.

 

CEC Entertainment (972-258-8507) trading as Chuck E. Cheese’s opened 31 locations in 2000. The company plans to grow by 10% in 2001 and continue to remodel units to the Phase 3 model.

 

Outback Steakhouse Inc. (813-282-1225) plans 110 new units over four concepts in 2001. Outback Steakhouse will open 80 units, while Carrabba’s Italian Grill will open 20 units. Fleming’s Prime Steakhouse and Roy’s will open five units each.

 

Kaufmann’s (314-342-6300) will open a 40,000 sq.ft. Kaufmann’s Mens Store at the first floor of the former Jenss department store at the Boulevard Mall in Amherst, NY. The store will open in May and will supplement the full-line store already in the center.

 

Concept Management, Inc. (601-296-9300) trading as Copeland’s Famous New Orleans Restaurant will open a 7,800 sq.ft. location at Montgomery Commons in Montgomery, AL.

 

Goodyear Service Center (214-637-9208) will open on St. Patrick’s Drive in St. Charles, MD. The store will open mid-summer and be operated by Waldorf, MD franchisee John Sullivan.

 

Cost Plus (510-893-7300) plans 23 new stores in 2001, down from initial estimate of 30 units.

Charming Shoppes (215-638-6909) will open between 125 and 140 stores in fiscal 2002 concentrating on its plus-sized divisions. Fashion Bug Plus stores, Catherines Plus Sizes and Added Dimensions/The Answer will be the focus of the growth. The company operates 1,789 stores in 48 states.

 

Mother’s Work (215-873-2237) trading as Mimi Essentials for maternity opened its first in the concept at The Court in King of Prussia in King of Prussia, PA. The store is devoted to the line of basics that was previously only available as a department in Mimi Maternity stores.

 

Yard House Restaurants (562-437-2337) will open three units over the next two years. The restaurants will open in the Irvine Spectrum in Irvine, CA; The River at Rancho Mirage near Palm Springs, CA and in downtown San Diego, CA.

 

Discount Auto Parts (941-687-9226) plans to open 40 stores for all of fiscal 2001. The company opened 17 units in the first quarter of fiscal 2001.

 

CarMax (804-747-0422) plans to open in two new markets in the coming 12 months. The company operates 40 used car stores and is a subsidiary of Circuit City Stores, Inc.

 

Children’s Orchard (800-999-5437) will open two stores in Phoenix, AZ. The high-end children’s clothing and equipment resaler operates over 100 stores nationwide.

 

Nordstrom’s (206-628-2111) may not open at the Triangle Town Center in Raleigh, NC. Drawings submitted to the city planner showed only four anchor spots for the center omitting the Nordstrom’s site.

 

Target (612-304-6099) and a planned community center in Savannah, GA needs to have its proposed site rezoned before construction may begin. The 361,257 sq.ft. center has over 160,000 sq.ft. more leasable space than is zoned for the 51.76-acre parcel.

 

Payless Cashways (816-347-6630) will open on Lyons Road in Miami Township near Dayton, OH. The opening will mean the closing of the company’s PCI Builders Resources on Indian Ripple Road in Beavercreek, OH.

 

NBA City (407-351-1171) will open its second NBA-themed restaurant and retail store in Manhattan by the end of the year. The company plans 12 openings in the coming five years in major metropolitan areas and in Asia. The prototype location is in Orlando, FL.
