Who's Opening & Where


Frisch’s Restaurants (513-961-2660) will open three Big Boy units in 2001. The company has a franchise agreement to open 41 Golden Corral restaurants by 2007. The company operates 93 units in the two concepts.

 

Circuit City (804-527-4000) plans to open 15 to 20 stores in the coming fiscal year. The company will also remodel 10 to 15 stores.

 

AMPM Convenience Stores (800-525-5857 ext. 5393) will open its first store in Tulsa, OK. The 1,003-unit chain operates stores in Western states.

Abercrombie & Fitch (614-577-6500) will open at Valley Plaza in Bakersfield, CA in June. The clothing retailer will open a 7,874 sq.ft. store on the site of the former B. Dalton Booksellers store. The company operates 350 stores.

 

Jillian’s (502-638-9008) has pulled out of negotiations to open at the proposed MarqE in North Raleigh, NC. The planned center has been in jeopardy since the bankruptcy announcement of Edwards Theaters which was to open a 17-screen theater on the site.

 

Target (612-304-6073) will open a SuperTarget store at Parkway Plaza in Sandfly, GA. The development site is located south of Montgomery Crossroad and bordered on the west by the proposed Truman Parkway. The company is considering numerous sites to open a store in Durham, NC. Sites include a lot across from New Hope Commons and as part of redeveloped South Square Mall. Another SuperTarget is planned for Clermont, FL. The 186,500 sq.ft. unit will anchor a 202,500 sq.ft. center located at the intersection of State Road 50 and North Hancock Road.

 

Albertson’s (817-568-3858) will open a 57,560 sq.ft. store at Pine Street and Peoria Avenue in North Tulsa, OK. The store will contain a pharmacy. The company operates 2,492 stores in 37 states and 11 stores in the metropolitan Tulsa area.

 

Pizza Hut (817-545-3495 x 231) will open at the Village Square Shopping Center in Newport News, VA. The Super Kmart-anchored center will also have a Chik-Fil-A restaurant open at a pad location.

 

Total Entertainment Restaurant Corporation (316-634-0505) trading as Fox and Hound English Pub & Grille will open two locations in Fort Worth, TX this year. The company has leased the space now used by Hyena’s Night Club and Swank Dance Club in the former S.H. Kress & Company dry goods store on Main Street. The second unit will be located near the intersection of Bryant Irvin Road and Interstate 20 at Cityview. The company operates 38 restaurants in 17 states.

 

Regal Cinemas (865-922-1123) plans to finish construction and open a 45,000 sq.ft., 12-screen theater at Millcreek Mall in Erie, PA. Construction had stopped on the theater in September when the construction company was concerned about the amount of debt Regal was carrying.

 

Qdoba Mexican Grill (303-629-5000) opened a unit in Arvada, CO. The chain has 56 units in 17 states with development rights sold for more than 300 units in the concept.

Seattle’s Best Coffee (206-442-2464) has opened a unit in Vancouver, BC, Canada. Plans call for 25 cafes in western Canada in the coming five years.

 

Home Depot (770-433-8211) opened a 116,000 sq.ft. store at the intersection of Orchard Road and Indian Trail in Aurora, IL. The store will have a 17,000 sq.ft. garden center adjacent and will be the chain’s 37th location in IL. The company will open on Alafaya Trail in eastern Orange County, FL. The company has targeted a site on Lee Road between Interstate 4 and Orange Blossom Trail in Orlando, FL and is in the process of allaying traffic concerns. The company opened a similarly designed store across from Miller Hill Mall in Duluth Heights, MN. The company will not open in Ken Caryl, CO for now. The company was denied fast track zoning approval in Jefferson County but will put their plans through the regular process. The company also plans a big box store on 9.5 acres near the Shoreline Ampitheatre in Mountain View, CA. The company opened the prototype for The Floor Store, a Home Depot concept devoted exclusively to flooring products, in Plano, TX. The 12,000 sq.ft. showroom and 18,000 sq.ft. warehouse combined are about one-third the size of an average Home Depot store. The company plans a more rapid roll-out than its last concept, The Home Expo.

 

Forever 21 (213-747-2121) will open a 9,600 sq.ft. store at Walden Galleria in Buffalo, NY. EB Kids has also signed a lease in the center but details were not released.

 

Fashion Bug (310-577-1414) will open an 8,000 sq.ft. store at Augusta Exchange in Augusta, GA. Other tenants will include Bath & Body Works, The Answer, Friedman’s Jewelers, S&K Famous Brands, Outland Knife & Cigar and Cold Stone Creamery. Developers say that there is only 2,000 sq.ft. available for lease in the center.

 

Krispy Kreme (336-725-2981) has signed a franchise agreement with the Jan Companies to open 16 locations in MA, CT and RI over the next five years. The Jan Companies operates 65 Burger King units in New England.

 

LVMH Moet Hennessy Louis Vuitton (212-889-4350) and DeBeers will partner in launching a retail venture that will sell jewelry under the DeBeers brand name.

 

T.G.I. Friday’s (214-450-5400) will open at Montgomery Commons Shopping Center in Montgomery, AL. The 5,500 sq.ft. unit is scheduled to open in May.

 

Farm Fresh (757-306-7006) will open a 42,000 sq.ft. store at Willow Oaks Shopping Center in Hampton, VA. The unit will open on the site of the former Farmer Jack’s store. The center’s other tenants include Peebles, Rite Aid, Bank of America, SunTrust, McDonalds and West Teleservices.

 

Navarro Discount Pharmacies (305-633-3000) will open a second Broward County location in 2001. The 12-unit chain began catering to Hispanic customers and just recently started running ads in English. The stores occupy spaces of 20,000 sq.ft. and first opened in Miami-Dade County.

 

Talbots (781-749-7600) opened a store at Weberstown Mall in Stockton, CA. The women’s apparel store chain operates over 700 locations nationwide.

 

Trader Joe’s (508-650-1929) will open its fifth Chicagoland location at Village Square Shopping Center in Lake Zurich, IL. The 9,000 sq.ft. store will offer high-end, mostly private-label foods. The company operates 132 stores nationwide.

 

La-Z-Boy Galleries (734-242-1444) will open two new stores in the Washington, DC market. A 16,000 sq.ft. store will open at Mirror Ridge Shopping Center in Sterling, VA and an 18,500 sq.ft. store will open at the Home Depot Plaza in Waldorf, MD. Upon opening of the units there will be 14 in the market.

 

Grandma’s Restaurants (218-727-2250) trading as Angie’s Cantina and Grill will open at Miller Hill Mall in Duluth Heights, MN. The southwestern-style restaurant will occupy the site of the former Miller Hill Cinema 3. The center will have two new tenants fill the former Montgomery Ward’s store. Old Navy and Barnes & Noble Bookstores will open in the center.

 

Anthropologie (215-665-0060) will open at Highland Village Mall in Houston, TX. The clothes and housewares store chain operates 21 locations nationwide. April Cornell (410-975-0558) will also open in the center. The specialty apparel chain operates 50 locations nationwide and in Canada.

 

Gap, Inc. (949-719-0829) is in negotiations with the Dallas Galleria in Dallas, TX for the 100,000 sq.ft. space that formerly housed Saks Fifth Avenue. The company wants to open a new concept including all of the lines in its current concepts. The company operates Gap, Old Navy and Banana Republic chains.
