Closings

Big V Supermarkets, Inc. (845-651-4411) trading as Shop Rite, will close seven of its 39 supermarkets as the company changes distributors. The remaining 32 stores will operate under the name Big V Supermarkets.

 

Grand Union (973-890-6000) will close its Mega Save store at Capital Center in Albany, NY. The center was previously known as Colvin Central Plaza and has visibility from Interstate 90. Caldor had left its anchor position in 1998. Grand Union will also close its Scotia, NY location due to its bankruptcy sale to C&S Wholesale Grocers.

 

Frank’s Nursery & Crafts (248-641-5900) will close 42 under-performing stores by the end of February. Included in the closings will be all 11 units in the Tampa Bay, FL area, but Bradenton, FL and Sarasota, FL stores will remain open. The 264-unit chain is opening larger stores in NJ and VA.

 

Scotty’s Inc. (863-299-1111) will close its store at Lemon Bay Plaza in Englewood, FL. The 150-unit hardware chain also closed locations in Port Charlotte, FL and Sarasota, FL.

 

Elephant & Castle Group (604-684-6451) trading as Rainforest Cafe will close its Scarborough Town Centre location in Toronto, Canada. The unit at Yorkdale Shopping Centre will remain open.

Regal Cinemas’ (865-922-1123) closed six FunScape units across the country. The concept included a food court and arcade with the traditional theaters. The closings occurred in Knoxville, TN; Nashville, TN; Chesapeake, VA; Fort Lauderdale, FL; Rochester, NY and Syracuse, NY.

 

McCrory Corporation (717-699-4000) will close its two stores in WV. The downtown Charleston location is suspected to be reopened as a Dollar Zone. The Weston, WV location, which had been trading under the G.C. Murphy brand, could not survive a fire and a roof collapse earlier this year. The Columbus, GA store will also close for transformation to a Dollar Zone.

 

Rite Aid (717-761-2633) will close 200 stores nationwide. In CO, 12 of the 43 units statewide will be closed. Three Colorado Springs, CO locations will close, as will the Monument, CO store. The other CO locations to be closed are in Pueblo, Denver, Fort Collins and Greeley.

 

TSI Soccer (919-484-0818) will close all 23 of its retail locations to refocus on catalog sales. The company’s parent holder Delia’s has attempted to sell the chain without success.

 

HomeBase Inc. (949-442-5500) will close all 84 of their stores within the year. The company will convert 62 locations to their home decorating concept House2Home.
