Who's Opening and Where

McCrory Corp. (717-699-4000) will convert its stores in the Buffalo, NY area to Dollar Zone stores. The change will occur in all four Buffalo-area McCrory’s location. The company plans 40 openings of its Dollar Zone concept in 2001. McCrory operates 175 units under the brands Dollar Zone, McCrory, J.J. Newberry and G.C. Murphy.

Atomic Burrito Inc. (405-840-7858) will open a second Tulsa, OK location. James Blacketer has taken over control of the company’s two remaining units and plans expansion in Norman, OK; Dallas, TX and Houston, TX.

Tuesday Morning’s (972-387-3562) plans to open between 30 and 50 stores in 2001. The deep discount retailer closes and reopens stores between four and nine times a year to change inventory and reinvent itself. The 431-unit chain operates in 38 states and cites college-educated women between 25 and 54 years of age as its customers.

My Gift Cottage.com (941-747-2355) opened its first freestanding location near Prime Outlets in Ellenton, FL. The chain is a division of Beall’s Department Stores and has 29 locations throughout FL.

Talbots (781-749-7600) will open at Weberston Mall in Stockton, CA. The upscale women’s clothing retailer has over 700 stores and plans 450 more by 2005.

Hickey-Freeman (312-372-6300) will open its first retail location on Fifth Avenue in New York City. The 4,000 sq.ft. store will feature the luxury apparel purveyor’s full line of products and will be designed by Robert A.M. Stern Architects.

Nordstrom (206-628-2111) has delayed its store opening at Florida Mall until 2003. The department store chain plans five stores in 2001 and ten in both 2002 and 2003. The company will open a 144,000 sq.ft. store at The Mall at Wellington Green in The Village of Wellington, FL. The store is expected to open in 2003 and will join anchors Lord & Taylor, Dillard’s, Burdines and JC Penney. Nordstrom operates 120 stores in 24 states.

Applebee’s (913-967-4000) plans to open more than 100 units in 2001. It would be the ninth consecutive year that the 1,271-unit chain opened over 100 locations.

Yves Saint Laurent Couture (212-850-5600) opened a unit at the Bellagio Hotel in Las Vegas, NV. The company will open at South Coast Plaza in Costa Mesa, CA and will double the size of its New York City flagship store (to 11,000 sq.ft.) in 2001. The company is actively seeking additional locations in major markets throughout the United States.

American Eagle Outfitters (724-776-4857) will open a 5,469 sq.ft. store at Rock Hill Galleria in Rock Hill, SC. The chain has 492 units in operation. The company has completed the purchase of Dylex Limited of Canada. The company will convert 47 Braemar stores throughout Canada to the American Eagle Outfitters brand as well as operating 116 units trading as Thriftys and Bluenotes.

Tealuxe, Inc. (888-832-5893) trading as Boston Tea Emporium plans 13 new units in 2001. The company will open three to four of those in NY.

Barbeques Galore (949-597-2400) plans 15 openings in 2001. The grilling-related retailer opened four units in 2000.

Caribou Coffee Company (888-227-4268) plans to open 20 to 50 units per year. The company operates 130 locations in six states.

Sur la Table (800-243-0852) plans 15 store openings nationwide in 2001. The 22-unit high-end kitchen retail chain opened 10 stores in 2000.

Lowe’s Home Improvement Center (336-658-4000), along with Kohl’s and Staples, are eyeing the last undeveloped corner at Eastchase Parkway and Interstate 30 in Fort Worth, TX. The 50-acre site will likely host all three in a new center. Lowe’s plans to open 125 stores in 2001.

Dillard’s (501-376-5200) will open a 200,000 sq.ft. store at Lent Ranch Marketplace in Elk Grove, CA. The 1.3 million sq.ft. center is scheduled to open in 2004 and will also be anchored by Macy’s and Gottchalks.

Hennes and Mauritz (212-489-8777) trading as H&M, will open a 30,000 sq.ft. store at Brass Mill Center in Waterbury, CT. The Swedish clothing retailer operates nine stores in the United States and plans 75 new units within the next three years.

Food Lion (704-633-8250) will open a 37,985 sq.ft. store at Forestdale Plaza Shopping Center in Jamestown, NC. The store will open in late 2001 and is expected to spur an 8,458 sq.ft. strip center.

Safeway (925-467-3000) will open a 55,000 sq.ft. store at Monte Vista Crossings in Turlock, CA. The center, which opened August 2000, is anchored by Home Depot and Target.

Chico’s (941-277-6200) will open a 2,500 sq.ft. store at 5151 Main Street in Amherst, NY. The 242-unit chain of women’s apparel stores operates in 39 states. The company plans to open 50 stores in fiscal 2001 including locations in Rochester, NY and Syracuse, NY.

HomeBase, Inc. (949-442-5500) is converting its HomeBase units to its House2Home concept. The company operates 84 locations and will convert 62 stores and close the other 22. The House2Home stores average over 100,000 sq.ft. Five converted HomeBase stores have been opened as House2Home in CA and NV.

Rag Shops Inc. (973-423-1303) plans to open five stores in fiscal 2001. The fabric and crafts retailer operates 69 stores in NY, NJ, PA and FL.

Corona Cigar Company (407-522-6336) will open its second store at Plaza Venezia in Orange County, FL. The 5,000 sq.ft. store will open summer 2001 in the center that will be anchored by Publix.

Sizzler International Inc. (310-568-0135) trading as Oscar’s, opened in Mira Mesa, CA. The company plans two or three openings for the concept in fiscal 2001.
