El Portal (702-897-5660) opened at South Coast Plaza in Costa Mesa, CA. The 3,500 sq.ft. store, specializing in travel, fashion and business accessories, is the 22nd unit in the chain. The company plans 125 openings in the next three years.

 

A&W Restaurants (888-456-2929) plans to open 400 dual locations with other fast-food restaurants. The company has co-branded with Long John Silver’s at 10 test locations, all of which were former Long John Silver locations. A ground-up site was opened in Padukah, KY and 30 to 60 units are planned this fiscal year. The units range from 2,400 sq.ft. to 3,200 sq.ft. The company has agreed to 300 dual locations with KFC over the next five years. The company has opened 35 KFC/A&W units in CA, CO, GA, KY, MT and UT.

 

Cost Plus World Market (510-893-7300) will open a 18,160 sq.ft. store at Church Street Plaza, during early 2001 in Evanston, IL. The store is the chain’s 11th in the Chicagoland area.

 

Hot Wok (630-932-1234) will open an 8,400 sq.ft. unit in June at Hoffman Village Shopping Center in Hoffman Estates, IL. It is the Indian-influenced Chinese food concept’s first unit in Chicago. Direct real estate questions to Sandy Griggs, NAI Hiffman, 630-932-1234.

 

Gumbo’s (512-263-0800) will open at the Great Western Sugar Building in Denver, CO. The 7,500 sq.ft. unit will be the third in the cajun cuisine restaurant chain.

 

Target (612-304-6099) will open a 125,381 sq.ft. store in the Citadel Mall in Charleston, SC. The company will demolish the existing structure and build on the JC Penney site.

 

Best Buy (952-947-2000) will open up to 65 stores over the next three years in Canada. The electronics discounter has signed eight leases to date.

 

One Price Clothing Stores (864-433-8888) will open no more than 10 units during fiscal 2001. The 595-unit chain opened six stores in the fourth quarter of fiscal 2000.

 

Factory 2 U Stores (858-627-1800) will open 13 stores in the fourth quarter of the fiscal year ending in February. The company operates 187 stores in six states and utilizes strip center locations.

 

Chico’s (941-277-6200) plans between 50 and 55 new stores in fiscal 2002. The private label ladies apparel retailer operates over 220 stores and opened 16 units in the fourth quarter of fiscal 2001.

 

BJ’s Wholesale Club (508-651-7400) plans to open 14 clubs in fiscal 2002. The 118-unit chain opened 11 clubs and 15 gas stations in fiscal 2001.

 

Rite Aid (717-761-2633) has abandoned plans to open two stores in Albany, NY area. The Central Avenue site in Colonie, NY has the building to the company’s specifications already built, and the Troy Schenectady Road site has been clear for two years. The 3,800-unit chain operates in 30 states.

 

Kohl’s (262-703-7000) announced plans to open five stores in Central CA during 2003. The company has proposed 87,000 sq.ft. freestanding stores in yet-to-be developed centers in Chico, Corona, Redlands, Riverside and Temecula. The company will open in October next to the Wal*Mart Supercenter in Coralville, IA. The site is located just north of the Coral Ridge Mall. Plans also call for four units in the Hartford/New Haven, CT market and three stores in AR. The department store chain operates 320 units in 26 states.

 

Jacobson’s (517-764-6400) will open as an anchor of the Cascades at Isleworth center in southwest Orange County, FL. The store is the chain’s first opening in almost four years and is scheduled to open late 2001. The company will relocate its Longwood, FL store when it opens a 60,000 sq.ft. anchor store at Renaissance Center in north Orlando, FL.

 

Lowe’s Home Improvements (336-658-4000) plans to open 115 to 125 stores in 2001. The company also plans 15 to 20 store relocations. The home inmprovement chain operates more than 600 stores in 39 states.

 

Coldwater Creek (208-263-2266) plans 80 openings in the next couple of years. The upscale women’s clothing retailer operates 12 stores.

 

Nordstrom’s (206-628-2111) has stopped plans for two stores in Cincinnati, OH and a unit in Pittsburgh, PA. The company is proceeding with its plans for a location at Wellington Green in Palm Beach County, FL that will open in 2003.

 

Village Super Market (973-467-2200), trading as Shop Rite, will open a superstore in Garwood, NJ. The company operates 22 supermarkets in NJ and PA.

 

Meijer (616-453-6711) will open in four Chicago, IL suburbs. Hoffman Estates will host the store, joining Bolingbrook, St. Charles and Aurora.

 

Wal*Mart (501-273-4000) is in discussions to move its Collinsville, IL location to Maryville, IL. The proposed location would be 180,000 sq.ft. and replace the 20-year-old 92,000 sq.ft. store in Collinsville.

 

Wendy’s (614-764-3100) will open a second unit on the west side of Charleston, WV. The 0.9-acre parcel is at the intersection of Washington and Lee Streets on the site of a former laundry that delayed opening because of environmental concerns.

 

Polly Esther’s (212-279-1977) will open two nightclubs in the South. The company will open a club in the former 3 Alarm Recording Studio in Memphis, TN. The building which has also been a fire station, will give the club 12,000 sq.ft. The company will also open in Shreveport, LA.
