Who's Opening & Where Home Depot (770-433-8211) may open a 100,000 sq.ft. EXPO Design Center at The Ridge at Creekside in Roseville, CA. The store will anchor the center with a Macy’s home store in the second phase of Creekside Center located across from the Galleria at Roseville. Evergreen Company is developing the project and CB Richard Ellis is the exclusive broker for the center. The company will not open a Home Depot store on the site located at the intersection of 29th Street and First Avenue Northeast in Cedar Rapids, IA. The lot was deemed too small for the company’s liking. The company may open in the former Montgomery Ward space at Turfland Mall in Lexington, KY. Wards owns the space at the center which is anchored Dillard’s. The company will open two mini-versions of itself in urban areas. The stores are planned for Chicago and Brooklyn and can occupy spaces as small as 50,000 sq.ft. The company is continuing its test of the Villager’s Hardware concept which has four locations in NJ. Ikea (610-878-2220) plans to open a 320,000 sq.ft. store in East Palo Alto, CA. The project may over-extend the capacity of the local fire station who said it does not have the ladder height or water pressure to handle a fire emergency for a building the size that is being proposed. The home furnishings store operates 168 locations nationwide. Tiffany & Company (212-755-8000) plans to open stores in San Jose, CA and Tampa, FL during 2001. The jewelry retailer operates over 100 stores worldwide. The Cato Corporation (704-554-8510) opened 14 stores and relocated four others in the first quarter of fiscal 2001. The apparel retailer plans to open 85 stores and relocate 25 stores during the fiscal year. The company operates 690 stores nationwide. Jacobson Stores Inc. (517-764-6400) will open three 80,000 sq.ft. stores by 2003. The units will be located at Legacy Place in Palm Beach Gardens, FL; at the Voice of America Center in Cincinnati, OH and at Legacy Village in Lyndhurst, OH. The company will not open a planned 80,000 sq.ft. store at The Cascades at Isleworth in Orlando, FL. The department store chain operates 26 stores in the southeast and midstates. PetsMart (623-580-6100) expects to open 35 stores during fiscal 2001. The company has gone to a 19,000 sq.ft. prototype and plans to open these stores in single-store markets and as fill-in locations in existing markets. The pet supply stores operate 530 stores nationwide. Krispy Kreme Doughnuts, Inc. (336-725-2981) plans to open 32 units in the remainder of fiscal 2002, with the majority of those being franchised. The company operates 180 locations nationwide. Kohl’s Department Stores (262-703-7000) plans to open 34 stores during the second quarter and 28 units in the fall. The company took over 15 former Bradlee’s locations in the northeast and operates over 360 stores nationwide. Nordstrom’s (206-373-4085) plans to open three full-line stores before the end of fiscal 2001. The units will be located in Chandler, AZ; Tampa, FL and Columbus, OH. The company plans six Nordstrom Rack stores during fiscal 2001 as well. The company opened one full-line store in Hurst, TX and two Rack stores in Los Angeles, CA and Broomfield, CO. The chain operates over 110 stores nationwide. Borders Books & Music (734-477-1100) plans to open 25 to 30 stores nationwide. The company will open a 22,000 sq.ft. store at Northland Plaza in DeKalb, IL. The site is located at the intersection of Route 23 and Barber Greene Road and will be the company’s 21st store in the Chicagoland area. The book retailer operates 354 superstores nationwide. H&M (212-489-8777) will open a 15,000 sq.ft. apparel store at Wilton Mall in Wilton, NY. The company plans to open 18 stores in 2001. The apparel retailer operates 21 locations in CT, MA, NJ and NY and plans 75 stores by 2003. Tweeter (617-262-6620) will open a store on Tyler Avenue in Riverside, CA. The company operates 17 stores in CA occupying spaces of 10,000 sq.ft. to 12,000 sq.ft. The company plans stores in San Bernadino and Chino, CA in fiscal 2002. The electronics retailer plans to open 30 stores annually and operates 83 stores nationwide. Build-A-Bear Workshops (888-560-2327) will open a store in International Plaza near the Tampa International Airport in Tampa, FL. The specialty retailer, which helps customers build a teddy bear from stock parts, operates 49 stores nationwide and plans to expand to 73 locations before the end of 2001. Burlington Coat Factory (609-387-7800) plans to open three 100,000 sq.ft. stores in former Montgomery Ward’s locations in AZ. The sites are in the East Valley near Superstition Springs Center in Mesa, AZ and Paradise Valley Mall and in the West Valley near Desert Sky Mall. The discount department store operates 290 stores in 42 states. Pacific Sunwear of California, Inc. (714-701-4063) plans to open 83 stores during the remainder of fiscal 2001. The company will open 54 PacSun locations, 13 PacSun Outlets and 16 d.e.m.o. stores. The company operates over 500 stores nationwide and has distribution facilities to handle twice as many locations. Wal*Mart (501-273-4000) will open a 220,000 sq.ft. Supercenter in Auburn, ME. The $11 million project is located on Mount Auburn Avenue on a site that included rock removal and blasting. The company plans to add nearly 80,000 sq.ft. of space to its store in Bedford, TX adding a supermarket to become a Supercenter. The location at the intersection of Cheek-Sparger Road and TX 121 will have 209,393 sq.ft. of space. The company plans to build a 200,000 sq.ft. Supercenter in North Augusta, GA. The site is located near the intersection of Martintown Road and Knox Avenue and will replace the 125,000 sq.ft. store at the Edgefield Square Shopping Center. Caribou Coffee (770-955-2434) will open a location at the soon-to-open Triangle Town Center in Raleigh, NC. The company plans to open four additional units in the market. The coffee retailer operates 148 stores in seven states. Walgreens (847-940-2500) will not open a store at the intersection of Georgia and Ridgecrest Avenues in North Augusta, GA. GMK Properties, which is representing the owners of the 1.9-acre parcel withdrew it rezoning request. Popeye’s Chicken & Biscuits (404-459-4450) opened a location in Georgetown, KY. AJB Investments has signed a franchise agreement to open 14 Popeye’s restaurants in central KY over the next seven years. The quick-serve Cajun-style restaurant chain signed an agreement for the development of 35 locations in NJ and NY. The company operates over 1,500 locations nationwide. Nike Stores, Inc. (503-532-7470) will open a 6,000 sq.ft. NIKEgoddess store at Fashion Island in Newport Beach, CA. The female-focused athletic apparel store is Nike’s first new concept in 10 years and plans a second store in the Los Angeles, CA market to open in March 2002. The company operates 15 Niketown stores worldwide and also 74 Nike Factory Outlet stores. Factory 2 U (858-637-4126) plans to open 53 stores during the remainder of fiscal 2001.
