Who's Opening & Where


Lord & Taylor (314-342-6300) will open two stores in the Dallas/Fort Worth, TX metroplex. The department store chain will relocate its Prestonwood Mall location to the planned Shops at Willow Bend in West Plano, TX. The company will also open a store in the former Montgomery Ward site at North East Mall in Hurst, TX. The store will open in 2002 and join Dillard’s, Nordstrom, J.C. Penney, Foley’s, Sears and Saks Fifth Avenue as anchors in the center owned by Simon Property Group.

Uno Restaurant Corporation (617-323-9200) trading as Pizzaria Uno-Chicago Bar & Grill expects to open seven company-owned stores and 11 franchised locations in fiscal 2001. The company opened three company owned stores and two franchises in the first quarter of fiscal 2001. The chain operates 180 units in 30 states.

CEC Entertainment, Inc. (972-258-8507) trading as Chuck E. Cheese’s plans to open 38 to 40 locations in 2001. The 384-unit chain also plans renovations to over 100 units this year.

Jeans Design, Ltd. (212-944-7373) plans to open three Pepe Jeans London stores in New York, Los Angeles and Miami. The 1,750 sq.ft. to 3,000 sq.ft. stores will open in 2002. The locations mark the brand’s first stores in the U.S. The company is considering spots in SoHo in New York, Miami’s South Beach neighborhood and on Melrose Avenue in Los Angeles. Plans call for a limited rollout with no more than a dozen locations by 2005. The company is considering Dallas, TX; Chicago, IL and San Francisco, CA for future locations.

L.A. Italian Kitchen (866-783-5245) opened an 800 sq.ft. restaurant at Lakewood Center in Lakewood, CA. The unit is the company’s fourth location, which prefers to tenant regional centers in the western states. The company has four more units under development at Vintage Fair Mall in Modesto, CA; Sherwood Mall in Stockton, CA; Coddingtown Mall in Santa Rosa, CA; Mount Shasta Mall in Redding, CA and the Venetian Resort-Hotel-Casino in Las Vegas, NV.

U.S. Factory Outlets (212-563-3650) recently opened a 43,000 sq.ft. store at Belmont Plaza in Youngstown, OH. The company also opened a store in Lima, OH. The company operates discount merchandise at 27 locations in 16 states.

Staples (508-253-8671) will open two 25,000 sq.ft. stores in Nova Scotia, CN. The first will be located at the Woodlawn Centre in Dartmouth, NS. The second will anchor a new $2.5 million plaza in New Glasgow, NS. Plazacorp Retail Properties signed both leases with the company.

Furla (212-343-0048) opened it third U.S. boutique at the City Centre Mall in Seattle, WA. The center is located on Pike Street between Fifth and Sixth Avenues. The chain, specializing in handbags and accessories, has its other domestic locations in New York City.

Lowe’s Home Improvement (336-658-4000) will open a 150,000 sq.ft. store at University Plaza in Edmond, OK. The center is located at the intersection of Second Street and Waterwood Parkway. A store is also under construction at the intersection of Interstate 35 and Main Street in Norman, OK. The company opened a 122,000 sq.ft. store at West End Pointe Shopping Center in Yukon, OK early last month and plans to open 115 to 120 stores by the end of the year.

Costco (425-313-6360) opened a 149,000 sq.ft. store on Town Center Drive in West Ashley, SC. The 355-unit chain plans to open 40 stores annually over the next three years.

CVS Pharmacy (401-765-1500) has delayed its plans to open a store at the intersection of East Colonial Drive and Mills Avenue in Orlando, FL. The company has met with resistance from local Vietnamese business owners concerned that a national chain will ruin the character of the neighborhood.

Kmart (248-643-1000) will open a 180,000 sq.ft. store at the Hampton Power Plant development in Hampton, VA. The company joins Lowe’s Home Improvement in the 600,000 sq.ft. center located at the intersection of Interstate 64 and Mercury Boulevard.

McDonald’s (630-623-3000) plans to open 1,500 to 1,600 locations worldwide in 2001. The fast-food chain operates 28,905 units in 120 countries, of which 12,811 are in the U.S.

Tops Market (716-635-5138) opened a 1,285 sq.ft. Tops Xpress convenience store with gas pumps adjacent to the Tops supermarket on Transit Road in Lancaster, NY. The company had previously used 30 sq.ft. cashier kiosks at its supermarkets with fuel pumps. The second Tops Xpress is planned as a freestanding location in Dunkirk, NY.

Sears’ (847-286-2500) plans to open 11 Great Indoors locations before the end of the year. The company will open two units in suburban Chicago, IL (Lombard and Schaumburg), one store in Columbus, OH and a two-story prototype in Denver, CO. The company has four home-related stores in operation.

Regis Salons (952-947-7000) plans to open 375 to 400 company-owned salons as well as acquiring 250 to 300 units in fiscal 2002. The company operates 6,604 units worldwide over six divsions: Regis Salons, strip center salons (Supercuts and Cost Cutters), MasterCuts, Trade Secret, Wal*Mart/SmartStyle Family Salons and international.

Goody’s Family Clothing (865-966-2000) opened three Columbia, SC area locations. The stores are located on Bower Parkway near Dick’s Sporting Goods, on Two Notch Road near the Wal*Mart Supercenter and in the former Wal*Mart building on Augusta Road in West Columbia. The stores are the 290-unit chain’s first in Richland and Lexington Counties, SC.

Ann Taylor Loft (212-536-3200) will open a store at Columbiana Centre in Coulmbia, SC. Ambercrombie & Fitch will also open a location at the center.

Popeye’s Chicken & Biscuits (404-459-4450) entered the Chattanooga, TN market with a location on Broad Street. The company plans two more Chattanooga locations in the coming 18 months and eventually wants eight units in the market.

Delia’s Corporation (212-807-9060) opened a store at Monroeville Mall in Pittsburgh, PA. The accessories and girl’s apparel retailer plans three more stores in the market and has signed leases at South Hills Village and the Mall at Robinson. The company operates 32 stores nationwide.

Choice Supermarkets (228-594-0265) opened a 30,000 sq.ft. store at Hardy Court Shopping Center in Gulfport, MS. The four-unit supermarket chain also operates in Long Beach, Waveland and Diamondhead, MS.

Entertainment Film Works (404-250-9551) plans to open the East Ridge Six movie theater in East Ridge, TN. The former theater operator, Carmike Theaters, and the property owner, Fletcher Bright Company, are in dispute over the sale of the contents of the building, holding up the transfer and reopening schedule. Entertainment Film Works will open 18 theaters nationwide this year to boost its total to 45 locations.

AMC Entertainment (816-221-4000) will not open a theater at the 1.2 million sq.ft. Ridgemar in Fort Worth, TX. The theater chain reached a mutual agreement with Shopco Advisory Group, the property’s owner, that a theater was not prudent for the development.
