The company decided that the site located at the intersection of Kettleman Lane and Lower Sacramento Road did not suit its needs. The company had announced a goal of 1,000 openings in three years, but plans to open 200 units in 2001. Shoe Carnival (812-867-4105) opened three stores in the first quarter of 2001. The stores are located in Midland, TX; Arnold, MO and Richmond, VA. The company plans 17 to 18 openings in 2001 and up to 35 to 40 stores in 2002. The company operates 168 stores in the south, east and midstates. Steak n Shake Company (317-633-4100) plans to open 20 to 25 restaurants in fiscal 2001. The company recently generated over $3 million in a sale-leaseback program.Brookstone, Inc. (603-577-8104) will open between 14 and 19 Brookstone stores in 2001. The company has opened its first Gardeners Eden concept and plans to follow with two more locations by the end of the year. The company operates 226 stores in 38 states. Kohl’s (262-703-7000) plans to open 70 stores in 2002 with its entry into the Boston, MA and Houston, TX markets. The company will break ground on Seekonk Square Plaza in the Providence, RI market. The 86,000 sq.ft. store will tenant the former RoJack’s Supermarket site in the center anchored by a 125,000 sq.ft. Target. The department store chain will enter the southern CA, NV and AZ markets in 2003 and 2004. The company operates over 340 stores nationwide. Ross Stores (510-505-4400) plans to open 40 stores in 2001. The company opened 10 stores in the first quarter of the year including two stores to enter the Atlanta, GA market. The company plans 11 to 12 stores in the southeast by year end. The company operates 409 Ross Dress for Less stores nationwide. Jacobson Stores Inc. (517-764-6400) will open two-story 80,000 sq.ft. anchor locations at two new developments in OH. The location at Voice of America Center in Cincinnati is scheduled to open in the fall 2002 and the store at Legacy Village Shopping Center in Lyndhurst is scheduled to open the next fall. The department store chain operates 24 locations. Krispy Kreme (336-725-2981) will open a store at the site of the former Arby’s restaurant located at the intersection of Mississippi Avenue and Chambers Road in Aurora, CO. The site is adjacent to the Settlers Village Shopping Center and would be run by franchisee Glazed Investments, LLC. Target Corporation (612-304-6073) will open in the former Montgomery Ward space at Richardson Square Mall in Richardson, TX. The company has not determined which of its three concepts, Target, Mervyn’s or Marshall Fields, will tenant the Simon Property Group-owned space. The company will open a Target store in the former Montgomery Ward property at Lakewood Center in Lakewood, CA. No opening date has been announced. The company plans to open 90 Target stores in 2001. Of that count 30 will be SuperTargets and 16 will be relocations. Crossroads Trading Company (510-599-9600) will open a 2,500 sq.ft. at the former Men’s Wearhouse space located on Pacific Avenue in Stockton, CA. The 12-unit chain is a consignment shop focused on high-end clothing brands. Pratt’s Wellness Mart (405-275-9831) will open a 32,000 sq.ft. store at the site of the former Jim’s IGA Superthrift at Kickingbird Square in Edmond, OK. The store will include an Earth Deli, which will relocate from its Western Avenue site, a pharmacy, organic meat department and expanded fresh produce section. The company operates nine stores in OK. Nordstrom (206-373-4085) will open a store at the Chandler Fashion Center in Chandler, AZ. The store will include an In-House Cafe and larger childrens’ and shoe sections than it Scottsdale location. The company operates 78 stores nationwide. H.E. Butt Grocery Co. (210-938-8931) will open an 80,000 sq.ft. H.E.B. Central Market at the intersection of Lovers Lane and Greenville Avenue in Dallas, TX. The store will occupy space formerly tenanted by strip joints, pawn shops and liquor stores. The site is across from Old Town Village shopping center. Wal*Mart (501-273-4000) will open a 100,000 sq.ft. store in the former Bradlee’s location at New Harbour Mall in New Fall River, MA. The center is anchored by Kmart and the two stores entrances will face each other and be separated by 390 feet. Wal*Mart is expected to open within 12 months. Entertainment Cinemas opened a theater at the center in late May. Kaufmann’s (314-342-6300) opened a 40,400 sq.ft. freestanding men’s apparel store in a former Jenss store location at the Boulevard Mall in Amherst, NY. The company is testing its mens-focused concept and may add it to its department store, freestanding furniture and home units. Famous Dave’s of America (952-294-1300) has entered an agreement with musician Isaac Hayes for two Isaac Hayes Restaurants. The company will change over its Chicago, IL location to the Isaac Hayes concept. The second unit will open at Peabody Place Retail and Entertainment Center in Memphis, TN. Lifestyle Ventures is also a partner in the endeavor. Famous Dave’s operates 46 units in MN, IL, WI, IA, MD, VA, UT, NE and SD. Best Buy (952-947-2000) plans to build a 45,000 sq.ft. store on Walton Way Extension in Augusta, GA. The project will require road improvements as the extension is an artery to the developments at Augusta Exchange.
