Who's Opening & Where


 

Harris Teeter (704-844-3100) may open the third location in their new concept Harris Teeter Express at North Hills Plaza in Raleigh, NC. The 22,000 sq.ft. store is a smaller version of their full-line stores. The site was formerly a Winn-Dixie.

 

La Curacao (213-386-7196) will open a 101,000 sq.ft. store at the Pacific Center in Huntington Park, CA. The company signed a 15-year lease worth $23.8 million for its fourth store, which will co-anchor the center located at the intersection of Slauson Avenue and Pacific Boulevard.

 

Nice Price Books (919-929-6222) will relocate its Durham, NC location to the site of the former New York New York Deli at 811 Broad Street. The three-unit chain is looking to acquire a site in Raleigh, NC to relocate its existing store.

 

Dollar Tree (757-321-5000) plans 260 to 275 new stores in 2001. The company opened 233 stores in 2000, and now operates 1,729 locations in 36 states.

 

Deals Nothing Over a Dollar (314-739-8300) opened a store on South Kings Highway in St. Louis, MO. The company plans 25 openings this year and has openings planned in Columbia, MO; Joplin, MO; Springfield, MO; Kansas City, MO; Louisville, KY; Tulsa, OK and Indianapolis, IN.

 

Bay View Franchise Mortgage Acceptance Company (650-312-7200) trading as Rally’s reopened 35 Detroit, MI-area locations. The Great Lakes Restaurant Company defaulted on the sites.

 

Safeway (925-467-3000) plans to open 85 to 90 new stores and 275 remodels in 2001. The company opened 75 stores and closed 46 units in 2000. The company operates 1,659 stores nationwide.

 

Michael’s (972-409-1300) will open at Whiskey Road Shopping Center in Aiken, GA. The craft store will open in 17,800 sq.ft. next to Goody’s Family Clothing.

 

Regis Corporation (612-947-7777) plans to open 375 to 400 salons in fiscal 2002. The company opened 450 salons in their six concepts for fiscal 2001 and operates 6,269 units worldwide.

 

Dickinson Theaters Inc. (503-221-7090) will open in smaller and medium-sized markets throughout OK. The company operates 21 locations in KS, OK, MO and TX.

Office Depot (561-438-7635) will open a store located at the North Freeway and Cypresswood Drive in Spring, TX. The unit will be located adjacent to the Home Depot and will be the chain’s 25th Houston, TX-area location. Moody Rambin brokered the lease for the company.

 

Lowes Home Improvements (336-658-4000) has not been able to begin construction on a planned store at Latham Circle Mall in Albany, NY. The plans for the center and the store are undergoing zoning and community comment. The company is also opening at South 5600 West in Salt Lake City, UT. The company will open two stores in the Omaha, NE area; a 150,000 sq.ft. store adjacent to the Wal*Mart located at 180th and Center Streets will open this summer and another store will be located at 76th and Dodge Streets.

 

Costco (425-313-6360) will open a store at 5300 South State Street in Salt Lake City, UT. The new location will be down the street from a new Home Depot.

 

The May Department Stores (314-342-6300) acquired nine stores from Saks Incorporated. The units include five Proffitt’s stores in Nashville, TN (Galleria at Cool Springs, The Mall at Green Hills, Bellevue Corner, Hickory Hollow Mall, Rivergate Mall); three Parisian stores- in Baton Rouge, LA (Cortana Mall), Lafayette, LA (Acadiana Mall) and Orlando, FL (The Florida Mall) and the McRae’s store in Baton Rouge, LA (Mall of Louisiana). The company will reopen the stores with Hecht’s branding the Nashville, TN stores, Foley’s opening the LA stores and Lord & Taylor operating the Orlando, FL unit. The company operates 429 department stores and 123 David’s Bridal stores in 43 states. The company plans 13 more openings in 2001.

 

Dick’s Sporting Goods (412-809-0100) is close to signing a lease on part of the 60,000 sq.ft. former Pleasents Hardware Store at the Short Pump Crossing Shopping Center in Richmond, VA. Old Navy may lease the remaining half of the space.

 

Best Buy (952-947-2000) plans to open 65 stores in the coming three years throughout Canada. The electronics chain has signed seven leases in Ontario and one lease in British Columbia.

 

Diedrich Coffee, Inc. (949-260-1600) trading as Gloria Jean’s, Coffee People and Coffee Plantation may scale back on expansion plans. The company operates 381 locations and had planned to add 1,500 more sites over the next seven years. If the company terminates two previously-announced franchise deal, the company will open 84 units in that time.

Champps Entertainment, Inc. (303-804-1333) trading as Champps Americana is opening five locations in the coming year. The company signed four ground leases and bought one site in the round of expansion. The company operates 15 units nationwide.

 

Christopher and Banks (612-551-5000) will open at the Citadel Mall in Colorado Springs, CO. The women’s apparel store chain operates over 250 locations nationwide.

 

Borders Books & Music (734-477-1100) will open a 25,000 sq.ft. store at the Marketplace at Hilltop Shopping Center in Virginia Beach, VA. The company will open a 25,000 sq.ft. store at The Brickyard in Tempe, AZ. The company operates over 300 Borders locations nationwide.

 

Wal*Mart (501-273-4000) will open a 44,000 sq.ft. Wal*Mart Neighborhood Market at the site of the former Michael’s Arts & Crafts on Garnett Road in Tulsa, OK. This is the second location in Tulsa for the concept. The company plans to open 15 to 20 Neighborhood Markets in the coming year.

 

Ground Round (781-380-3100) will open a restaurant at the Best Western Hotel in Mystic, CT. The family restaurant chain will remain open on Long Hill Road in Groton, CT.

 

Target (612-304-6099) plans a 170,000 sq.ft. Super Target in Wake Forest, NC. The store will anchor Granite Development’s Capital Plaza, a power center tenanted by Home Depot and Applebee’s. The company plans 90 openings this year.

 

OfficeMax (216-471-6900) is scaling back expansion plans. The company had hoped to open 50 stores in 2001, but plans now call for less than 25 new locations. The company has begun with 46 out of 50 planned store closings.

 

Cartier (212-753-0111) will open a store at Cherry Creek Shopping Center in Denver, CO. The company operates 27 locations in the United States. Also opening at the center will be apparel stores Bisou Bisou, Diesel, Lucky Brand, Talbots Woman and Petite Sophisticates and skin care retailer L’Occitane.

 

Stonewood Tavern & Grill (904-677-1167) will open at Plaza Royale in Gainesville, FL. The dinner-only restaurant chain operates five locations throughout FL.

 

Starbucks Coffee (413-566-0216) plans to open 1,100 locations through company-owned and licensed stores. The company operates 3,190 units in North America.
