Pier 1 Imports (817-878-8000) will close its University District location on Northeast 45th Street and University Way Northeast in Seattle, WA.

 

Allied Fashions (912-443-3650) trades as Citi Trends Fashions for Less will close its store on West Broughton Street in Savannah, GA. The regional department store chain operates 135 locations in the south.

 

Wehrenberg Theaters (314-822-4520) filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. The company operates 200 screens at 17 locations throughout MO.

 

Royale Theaters (316-722-6467) closed Cinemas East in Wichita, KS. The chain remains the second largest in Witchita with 29 screens.

 

Furrs Supermarket (505-998-3877) filed a voluntary petition for reorganization under Chapter 11 of the United States Bankruptcy Code. The company is not expected to close any of its 71 stores at this time.

 

Stage Stores (713-218-4444) is continuing with plans to close 121 stores by spring 2001. The stores in Creston, IA; Denison, IA; Spencer, IA; McCook, NE and Fairbury, NE will close in April. The company will focus on 348 stores in 14 states after this round of closings has been completed.

 

Red Robin Restaurant (303-846-6000) will close its location on George Washington Way in Richland, WA. The restaurant and property owner could not agree on lease terms. The company opened 25 units last year and operates 162 locations nationwide.

 

Garden Botanika (425-881-9603) will close its remaining 107 stores after receiving approval from the U.S. Bankruptcy Court to retain Buxbaum Group as liquidation managers. The company had been operating under chapter 11 protection since April 1999.

 

Shells Casual Seafood (813-961-0944) will close its location on North Monroe Street and Universal Drive in Tallahassee, FL. The company operates 45 locations in FL and the Midwestern state.

 

Loews Cineplex Entertainment (212-833-6160) has announced plans to close 112 locations in North America and filed for Chapter 11 protection. Canadian buyout firm Onex Corporation, Global Crossing Ltd. principal Gary Winnick and Oaktree Capital Management are seeking to buy assets from the struggling theater chain. The company will close the six-screen Tacoma Central Cinemas at Tacoma Central Shopping Center in Tacoma, WA and the two-screen City Centre Cinemas in Seattle, WA.

 

JC Penney (922-431-1000) will close its store in Alexandria, KY. The store anchors the Alexandria Village Shopping Center with Wal*Mart. The closing is part of the company’s second round of scale backs in as many years. The nationwide closings will affect 44 full-line stores and two outlet centers. The closings will take place in AR, CA, CO (2), GA (2), IL (3), IN (4), KS, KY (2), MA, MI, MS, NY (2), NC (3), OH, OR (2), PA (2), SC, TX (3), UT, WA, WI and WY as well as both outlet stores are in CA. The company has already made cuts at the headquarters of Eckerd Drugstores. The chain operates 2,650 stores nationwide.

 

Lechter’s, Inc. (973-481-1100) will close 166 stores over three brands as part of a company-wide repositioning. The company will close 128 Lechter’s stores, 27 Famous Brands Housewares Outlets and all 11 Costless Home Store locations. The company will continue to operate 241 Lechters stores but will be moving the brand toward its new thinkkitchen concept. The company will also continue to operate 83 Famous Brands Outlets.

 

Sharon Luggage & Gifts (704-525-4066) will close its location at Northgate Mall in Raleigh, NC. The company will move its store to The Streets at Southpointe, a project under construction in South Durham, NC.
