Who's Opening & Where


Walt Disney Company (714-781-4000) opened the first phase of a 300,000 sq.ft. retail center located between Disneyland and the new California Adventure, called Downtown Disney. The entertainment center is anchored by a 36,000 sq.ft. ESPN Zone and a 40,000 sq.ft. World of Disney. AMC Theaters will open a 60,000 sq.ft. 12-screen theater. House of Blues, Y Arriba Y Arriba, Ralph Brennan’s Jazz Kitchen, The Rainforest Cafe and La Brea Bakery will also open restaurants in the center.

 

Talbots (781-749-7600) will open a 6,188 sq.ft. store at The Shoppes at Brinton Lake in Concordville, PA. The company operates 673 stores nationwide. The landlord was represented by the Michael Salove Company.

 

Lowes Home Improvement (336-658-4000) will open 75 stores along the East Coast from Philadelphia, PA to ME over the next five years. The company will focus on 25 openings in the Boston, MA area. The store in Danvers, MA is scheduled to open in mid-March and stores in Brockton, MA; Worcester, MA and North Attleboro, MA will follow. The company plans to spend $1.3 billion on its Northeast expansion. The company operates more than 650 stores in 40 states.

Steve Madden, Ltd. (718-446-1800) will open a 1,569 sq.ft. store at Beachwood Place Shopping Center in Cleveland, OH. The fashion footwear designer and retailer plans 10 openings in fiscal 2001 and operates 67 stores nationwide.

 

Krispy Kreme (336-725-2981) plans to open 36 units in fiscal 2002. The company opened 36 stores in fiscal 2001 and operates 175 stores in 28 states.

 

Banana Republic (949-719-0829) will open a 5,100 sq.ft. store at the Balboa Building at the entrance to Paseo Nuevo in Santa Barbara, CA. The company has signed a 10-year lease with options on the space that has been a bank location since it was built in 1923.

 

The TJX Companies (508-390-2230) has announced plans to expand its store count by 10% in fiscal 2002. The company operates 1,419 stores in the T.J. Maxx, Marshalls, HomeGoods, A.J. Wright and Winners brands across North America. The company plans 75 openings in the United States and 14 new Winners stores and seven new HomeGoods units in Canada.

Gold’s Gym (410-309-9450) will open a 26,500 sq.ft. unit in a former Heilig-Meyers location on South Blackstock Road in Spartenburg, SC. The chain will close its John B. White Sr. Boulevard location when the facility is completed.

 

The Restaurant Group, LLC (716-218-9023) trading as Perkins will open three locations in the Buffalo, NY market. The first will be located on Niagra Falls Boulevard in Tonawanda, NY. According to the company the new locations will be 6,000 sq.ft. units that are built to suit. The company is targeting Hamburg and Amherst, NY for the other locations.

 

Longhorn Steakhouse (770-551-5400) will open its second unit in the Montgomery, AL market location at Cobbs Ford Road and Old Farm Lane in Prattville, AL.

 

Babies ‘R’ Us (201-599-7850) will open a 29,000 sq.ft. store at the site of the former Tomkinson Chrysler Plymouth dealership on Coldwater Road in Fort Wayne, IN. The company operates 133 stores in the continental U.S.

 

Aaron Rents (404-231-0011) purchased nine stores in LA and TX that the company will operate. The stores are located in Beaumont, TX; Groves, TX; New Iberia, LA; Lake Charles, LA; Opelousas, LA; Jennings, LA; Eunice, LA; and two stores in Lafayette, LA. The company plans to open 40 company-owned and 40 franchised stores in 2001. The company operates 570 stores in 42 states and Puerto Rico.

 

Ichiban Japanese Steakhouse (847-856-8800) will open a 3,100 sq.ft. unit at Plaza Del Prado Shopping Center in Glenview, IL. It is the company’s second Chicago, IL-area unit.

 

Rent-A-Center (972-801-1200) opened 14 stores in the first quarter of 2001 and plans to expand its store base between 10% and 15% for the year. The rent-to-own chain operates 2,171 locations nationwide.

 

Barnes & Noble Booksellers (212-633-3300) will open a 25,000 sq.ft. store in an addition to Apache Mall in Rochester, MN. The store will be the second in the market for the company which operates 933 units over its three concepts nationwide.

Ultimate Electronics (303-412-2500) plans to open eight to nine stores in fiscal 2002. One opening is planned for this month, with four more in the third quarter and three to four openings in the fourth quarter.

 

Borders Books and Music (734-477-1100) will open a 28,000 sq.ft. store at Bellevue Square in Bellevue, WA. The location is scheduled to open in June and will be the company’s seventh Seattle, WA-area store. The company will also open a 30,000 sq.ft. store at Watchung Square Mall in Watchung, NJ. The location is scheduled to open in May and will be the company’s ninth store in NJ. The company will open a 24,000 sq.ft. store at the Shoppes at Brinton Lake in Glen Mills, PA. The location will be the 14th in the Philadelphia, PA market. The company operates 335 units nationwide.

 

Home Depot (770-433-8211) will open a 135,000 sq.ft. store in a new center being built on 34 acres of a former Superfund site located at the intersection of US Route 1 and CT Route 110 in Stratford, CT. The center broke ground in September 2000, and construction on the Home Depot will begin in spring 2001.

 

Ann Taylor (212-536-3200) will open 12 stores in fiscal 2001. The company plans to increase its store’s square footage by 17%. The company operates 478 stores in 42 states.

 

Kohl’s (262-703-7000) will open 16 stores in April. Four of the units will be located in the Hartford/New Haven, CT area; three in the Fayetteville/Fort Smith, AR market; two in Raleigh/Durham, NC and one store each in Minneapolis, MN; Pittsburgh, PA; Colorado Springs, CO; Cleveland, OH; Baltimore, MD; Battle Creek, MI and Detroit, MI. The company plans to open 21 to 26 units in the fall, continuing to fill in existing markets. The company plans 55 to 60 total openings for the year. The department store chain operates 320 stores in 26 states.

 

Hooters (770-951-2040) will not open a restaurant on East College Avenue in State College, PA. Developer Jeff Haas said in a faxed release to a local newspaper that he would bow to "the wishes of the community."

 

Pizzeria Uno (617-323-9200) will open six to eight restaurants in fiscal 2001, including one unit which opened in the first quarter.
