Who's Opening & Where


Office Depot (561-438-7635) plans to open 50 stores in 2001. The company opened 27 stores in the fourth quarter of 2000 and operates 888 units across North America.

 

Quizno’s Classic Subs (702-359-3300) will open a 1,300 sq.ft. location at Plaza Royale in Gainesville, FL. The unit is scheduled to open at the end of the month and the company operates 1,000 locations worldwide.

 

Wild Oats Markets, Inc. (303-440-5220) opened stores in Cleveland, OH and Irvine, CA during the first quarter of 2001. The company has nine sites in development and expects to open 10 stores in 2001. The company operates 107 stores in 22 states.

 

Sears, Roebuck & Company (847-286-2500) is considering moving into the Montgomery Ward’s site at Lynnhaven Mall in Virginia Beach, VA. The disposition of Ward’s sites will not commence until all of its 250 stores have closed.

 

Thomasville Furniture (336-472-4000) will open a 6,900 sq.ft. factory outlet store at the Westover Gallery of Shops in Greensboro, NC.

 

Valentino’s (402-434-9360) trading as Grand Italian Buffets will open a unit across from the Mall of the Bluffs in Council Bluffs, IA. The company is franchising the concept.

 

The Wet Seal, Inc. (949-699-4039) will open 20 stores in its Wet Seal concept and five stores in its Arden B. concept in fiscal 2001. The company will close approximately 20 stores across its three concepts, Wet Seal, Arden B. and Contempo Casuals. The company operates 552 stores nationwide.

 

Neiman Marcus (214-761-2410) will open a 120,000 sq.ft. store at The Shops at La Cantera in San Antonio, TX. The store will join Nordstrom, Dillard’s and Foley’s as anchors of the 1.3 million sq.ft. center. The site is located at the intersection of Interstate 10 and Loop 1604 and is being developed by The Rouse Company. The store is scheduled to open in 2004.

 

Duane Reade (212-273-5700) will open 25 stores in the metropolitan New York area in fiscal 2001. The company is focusing on the more populated areas surrounding Manhattan. The company operates 172 stores.

 

Staples (508-253-5000 ext. 38671) will open a 24,000 sq.ft. store at Spreckles Park in Manteca, CA. The company operates 147 locations in CA. The company will not open a planned 24,512 sq.ft. store at Gateway Mall in Springfield, OR.

 

Kohl’s (262-703-7000) will acquire 12 former Bradlee’s sites in the Boston, MA market and three more in NJ as part of a plan submitted to the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in New York. The company is working with Wal*Mart and Home Depot to take over 35 Bradlee’s sites in the Northeast. The Boston-area stores would be the company’s first in the market. The company plans to reopen the remodeled stores in spring 2002. Kohl’s operates 320 stores in 26 states and plans 55 to 60 openings in 2001. The company is also seeking to open a 86,000 sq.ft. store at Nashua Mall in Nashua, NH. The site is a 80,000 sq.ft. former Bradlee’s store. The company will open three stores in the Fayetteville, AR market. The company will open locations at Steele Crossing in Fayetteville, Scottsdale Center in Rogers and a store in Fort Smith. The company operates 320 stores.

 

Panera Bread Company (314-918-7779) opened a store at the Summit Shops in Richmond, VA. The company plans another area store by the end of the year and ultimately plans 10 locations in the market. The company operates 246 stores nationwide.

 

Fleming Companies (405-858-5963) trading as Fresh 4 Less will open its first store for the concept in Milwaukee, WI. The company will remodel 10 of the 33 Sentry Foods in WI to the new concept. The other 23 Sentry Food stores will be sold.

 

The Restaurant Company (901-766-6491) trading as Perkins Restaurant and Bakery plans to open between 25 and 30 units in 2001. The company opened 29 units in 2000 and operates 491 locations across North America.

 

CEC Entertainment (972-258-8507) trading as Chuck E. Cheese’s plans to grow its restaurant count by 10% in 2001 and renovate 100 locations. The company operates 380 locations in 45 states.

 

Dillard’s (501-376-5200) will open a 204,000 sq.ft. anchor store at the Stony Point retail development in South Richmond, VA. The center is being developed by Taubman Centers and will include 500,000 sq.ft. to 600,000 sq.ft. of space. Dillard’s operates 342 full-line stores in 29 states.

 

Smart & Final (323-869-7500) plans to open 15 stores in 2001. The company operates 218 supermarkets in the western states and Mexico.

 

Vicorp Restaurants (303-296-2121) plans to open four to six company-operated units in the Village Inn concept as well as four Bakers Square restaurants in the Midwest in fiscal 2001.

Sams Club (501-273-4000) will open a 134,000 sq.ft. store at Princess Anne Plaza in Virginia Beach, VA. The store will open in the former Home Quarters site and is scheduled to open spring 2002. Divaris Real Estate brokered the transaction.

 

Lowe’s Home Improvement (336-658-4000) plans to open 115 to 120 stores in fiscal 2001, boosting its square footage by 18% to 20%. The company operates 650 stores in 40 states.

 

The Men’s Wearhouse (510-657-9821) plans 25 new locations in 2001. The company will also open 15 K&G Men’s stores. The company operates 653 stores across its three concepts (Men’s Wearhouse, K&G Men’s Store and Suit Wearhouse).

 

Payless ShoeSource (785-233-5171) opened 56 units in Canada in fiscal 2000 to raise the total to 236 stores. The company operates 4,912 stores throughout the Western hemisphere.

 

J.Jill (617-376-4300) plans 24 store openings in fiscal 2001. The company has committed to 17 sites and currently operates 23 stores.

 

Earful of Books, Inc. (512-343-2620) opened its location in Rockville, MD located at the intersection of Randolph Road and Nicholson Avenue. The unit is co-tenanted with a Blockbuster Video. The audiobook sales and rental stores have an agreement to co-locate in 150 sites by mid-2003 including a Gaithersburg, MD store by the end of the year.

 

Tasty Baking Company (215-221-8500) opened its eighth Thrift Outlet store at Progress Plaza in North Philadelphia. PA. The 2,800 sq.ft. store will sell the company’s Tastykake line at 40% to 75% off retail prices. The company plans 19 openings during 2001 in PA, NJ and DE.

 

Williams-Sonoma (415-421-7900) plans to open 53 units across its four concepts in fiscal 2001. The company will open 20 Williams-Sonoma stores, 15 Pottery Barn locations, 16 Pottery Barn Kids locations and two Hold Everything stores. The company will also close 23 locations.

 

Walgreen’s (847-940-2500) will open a 16,000 sq.ft. store at the intersection of Vineville Avenue and Park Street in Macon, GA. The company will also open a 14,500 sq.ft. store at the intersection of Watson Boulevard and Houston Road in Warner Robins, GA. The site is a former Shaheen Office Supply location and Walgreens is scheduled to open in September.
