Who's Opening & WherePathmark Stores, Inc. (732-499-4327) plans to open nine stores and renovate 35 others in 2001. Three openings will take place in New York City and six former Grand Union locations will be converted to the Pathmark concept.
Wal*Mart (501-273-4000) will open a 207,000 sq.ft. superstore at Hampden Town Center in southeast Denver, CO. The 14.5 acre site is located between Interstate 225 and East Hampden Avenue near the Kennedy Golf Course. The center is a $200 million, 100-acre project that includes apartments, townhomes and over 300,000 sq.ft. of office space along with retail buildings.
Verizon Wireless (925-904-3800) opened four stores and four kiosks in the San Francisco Bay, CA area. The stores are located on Hillcrest Avenue in Antioch, in the Kaiser Building in Oakland, at the Arroyo Plaza in Livermore and on Harrison Street in San Francisco. The kiosks opened in Safeway stores in Pleasent Hill, Livermore and Plesanton. Another kiosk opened in the Hutchs Car Wash in Hayward.
Stater Brothers Markets (909-783-5002) opened a 43,235 sq.ft. store in San Bernadino, CA. The site is located on East 40th Street and will include a full-service Arrowhead Credit Union. The company operates 155 supermarkets throughout southern CA.
P.F. Changs China Bistro (602-957-8986) opened its second Pei Wei Asian Diner location in Phoenix, AZ. Three more openings are planned in 2001, one in Scottsdale, AZ and two in Dallas, TX.
Frischs Restaurants, Inc. (513-961-2660) opened a new prototype Big Boy Restaurant. The company also opened two Golden Corral units and plans three more openings in the coming three months. The company operates 133 locations under the brand names Big Boy and Golden Corral in OH, IN and KY. The company plans to open 37 additional Golden Corral units by 2007.
Bed Bath & Beyond (908-688-0888) entered the RI, ME, MS, ND and ID markets in fiscal 2000 and plans 80 store openings in fiscal 2001. The company operates 311 locations in 43 states. The Gap Inc. (949-719-0829) will open a trio of the companys concepts in a 127,639 sq.ft. former Saks Fifth Avenue at the Dallas Galleria in Dallas, TX. The three story space will have distinct stores on each level but will be connected by elevator. Banana Republic will occupy the ground floor, The Gap the mid-level and Old Navy the top floor. The stores will be located in the southern part of the Galleria anchored by Macys and Nordstroms.
Albertsons (510-678-4211) will open a 50,400 sq.ft. store at Visalia Marketplace in Visalia, CA. The center is located at the intersection of Highway 198 and County Center Drive and will also include a Big Kmart and two other buildings with GLAs of 15,000 sq.ft. and 22,000 sq.ft. respectively. The center also consists of an 85,000 sq.ft. former Montgomery Ward building that is not owned by the same owner as the rest of the property.
Kaufmanns (412-232-2000) will open a new store on the same site of its existing store in the University Heights area of Pittsburgh, PA. The existing store, located at the intersection of Warrensville and Cedar Roads, will remain open until the new unit opens in spring 2002. Schultz Sav-O Stores (920-457-4433) plans to broaden its geographical scope into MN, MI and IA. The company operates 90 Piggly Wiggly stores in WI and IL. The company is recruiting individual operators and converting their stores to the Piggly Wiggly format.
Kmart (248-643-1000) will open two Super Kmart locations in the Milwaukee, WI trade area. The first will be a 165,000 sq.ft. store that will co-tenant a building with Michaels Arts & Crafts on the site of the former Loomis Center on Milwaukees south side. The centers Boston Market, Dairy Queen, Office Max and Zebbs Family Restaurant will remain in business. The second Super Kmart will be built on 15 acres located at the intersection of West Fond du Lac and West North Avenues in Milwaukees central city. The 156,000 sq.ft. store will be built with 30,000 sq.ft. of additional shop space.
Tweeter Home Entertainment (781-830-3478) added eight stores by acquisition in 2001, four each from Douglas TV and Big Screen City. The company will also open 17 stores to bring the companys total to 115.
Quick Check Food Stores, Inc. (908-534-7191) opened a freestanding 5,332 sq.ft. store in South Plainfield, NJ. The location is the first with the companys new interior prototype. The company operates 105 locations throughout NJ. The company plans 15 stores during the coming 18 months and has units in Hackettstown, NJ and Lafayette, NJ under construction.
Longs Drug Stores (925-210-6763) opened two locations in southern CA. The company opened its second unit in Pacific Beach and its second unit in Newbury Park. The company plans to open 20 stores in 2001. The drug store chain operates 417 locations in CA, HI, WA, NV, CO and OR.
Best Buy (952-947-2000) will open five 45,000 sq.ft. stores in NJ and NY by this fall. The stores will be located at the intersection of Route 25 and Jerrico Turnpike near the Huntington Square Mall in Commack, NY; on Central Avenue in Yonkers, NY; at the intersection of Queens Boulevard and the Long Island Expressway near Queens Place Shopping Center in Rego Park, NY; at the intersection of Route 9 and Craig Road in Manalapan, NJ and at the Fashion Center Mall in Paramus, NJ. The electronics retailer entered the market with 15 stores in 2000 and plans to have 40 in the New York Metropolitan area by 2004. The company plans 60 openings nationwide in 2001. Over its six store concepts, the company operates over 1,800 units nationwide.
H&M (212-489-8777) opened a 30,000 sq.ft. store at Sunrise Mall in Massapequa, NY. The unit is located on the ground floor of the center located on Sunrise Highway and Carmans Road. The company operates 600 stores in 14 countries and is underway with a 75-store rollout in the U.S.
United Colors of Bennetton (212-593-0290) will open a 12,000 sq.ft. megastore at Mall of Georgia in Atlanta, GA. The company rolled out the concept in Europe and plans 10 more locations by the end of the year in major markets including New York, Chicago and Miami. Another 10 to 15 locations are planned for 2002.
Bruce G. Webers Precious Jewels (918-749-1700) opened a 2,000 sq.ft. store on Utica Square Road in Tulsa, OK. The jewelry retailer is located in the site of a former F&M Bank.
Crate & Barrel (847-272-2888) opened its first CB2 store on North Lincoln Avenue over a year ago but expansion plans are only now becoming clear. The company is looking for sites for its less-expensive home furnishings concept in the Chicagoland area.
Borders Books and Music (734-477-1100) will open a 23,000 sq.ft. store at NewMarket Square in Wichita, KS. The center is located at the intersection of 21st Street and Maize Road and the store is scheduled to open in the first quarter of 2002. |
