Eastern Federal Theaters (704-377-3495) may delay the opening of its planned 16-screen theater at Brier Creek Commons in Raleigh, NC. The company may wait for the mixed-use development to be further built up before opening its theater. The complex will include a BJ’s Wholesale Club, Dick’s Sporting Goods and TJ Maxx.

 

Kroger (513-762-4000) will open a 35,000 sq.ft. store on the current site of Bermuda Greens golf course and Rundown Cafe in Hampton, VA. The unit will be built on 4.25 acres and will be the company’s first location in the Outer Banks. The Rundown Cafe will relocate on the same road. Kroger operates 2,830 units in 31 states.

 

Darden Restaurants (407-245-4000) will open three Bahama Breeze restaurants and four Smokey Bones BBQ units in fiscal 2001. The company operates 19 Bahama Breeze units and five Smokey Bones BBQ restaurants nationwide. The company also trades as The Olive Garden and Red Lobster.

 

Coldwater Creek (208-263-2266) will open its 10th store in the former Warner Brothers location at SouthPark Mall in Charlotte, NC. The company has a strong customer base from its women’s apparel catalog and Internet sales. The company estimates that it has 75,000 existing customers within an hour drive of the center. The company plans 10 to 15 new stores by the end of 2001.

 

Applebee’s International (913-967-4173) plans to open 600 units over the next several years through company-owned and franchised units. The company operates 1,300 units nationwide.

 

Domino’s Pizza (888-366-4667) opened a store located on Fulton Street in Brooklyn, NY. The chain is the first national retailer to invest in the $3 million Fulton Street Retail Initiative granted by Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani. The store is also Domino’s Pizza’s 7,000th unit worldwide.

 

Costco (425-313-6360) will open a 148,000 sq.ft. store at Paxton Town Center in Lower Paxton Township, PA. The store is scheduled to open in the fall. The company operates 300 wholesale clubs worldwide. The 750,000 sq.ft. center is anchored by Target, Kohl’s, Weis Markets, Borders Books & Music, Michael’s Arts & Crafts, Circuit City, Dress Barn, Tweeter, The Men’s Wearhouse and Bed Bath & Beyond.

 

O’Charley’s Restaurants (615-256-8500) will open two locations in the Richmond, VA-area. The first will open this month at the intersection of Maryland Drive and Gaskins Road. Another unit will open later this summer at The Creeks at Virginia Centre located on Brook Road across from Virginia Center Commons. The company plans eight locations in the market over the next three years.

Carrabba’s Italian Grill (813-288-8286) will open a restaurant at Cooper Creek Center in Bradenton, FL. The store located at the intersection of Interstate 75 and University Parkway will be the company’s 82nd unit.

 

Target (612-304-6073) will open a 125,000 sq.ft. store on the site of the former Ann & Hope location in Seekonk, MA. The store, located on Commerce Way, is scheduled to open in late July. The company operates 992 stores nationwide.

 

Walgreen’s (847-940-2500) expects to open 500 units in fiscal 2001. The company opened 238 locations in the first half of the year. The company has a goal of 6,000 stores operating by 2010.

 

El Pollo Loco (949-251-5000) plans to open 100 new locations in southern CA and San Antonio, TX over the next five years. The company has hired former Taco Bell and Pepsico executive Steve Carley as president and CEO. The company operates 282 units in four western states.

 

The Wet Seal, Inc. (949-699-4039) acquired the 18-unit Zutopia chain. The company plans to open between 30 and 40 locations in fiscal 2001. The company operates 568 stores under the names Contempo Casuals, Wet Seal, Arden B. and Zutopia.

 

Staples (508-253-8671) opened a 23,000 sq.ft. store at West End Point Shopping Center in Yukon, OK. The 72-acre development located near the intersection of Interstate 40 and Garth Brooks Boulevard will also feature a Kohl’s Department Store and a Lowe’s Home Improvement Warehouse.

 

Beall’s Department Stores (941-747-2355) plans to open 60 locations in western and southern states including CA and breaking into the NV market. The company expects to open the stores over the next several years and place about half in FL. The company operates over 70 stores in the southern states.

 

Publix Super Markets, Inc. (863-688-1188) plans 340 new locations over the next six years. The company will open 54 units this year and average 68 stores annually over the next five years. The company will replace some its existing 649 locations in FL, GA, SC and AL.

 

Home Depot (770-433-8211) will delay the development of a proposed new store at 31st Street and Ousdahl Drive in Lawrence, KS. The city commission will not approve the project until concerns about the change of traffic patterns on the South Lawrence Trafficway are addressed.

 

H.H. Gregg (317-844-6833) opened a 28,000 sq.ft. store across from the Mall at Fairfield Commons in Beavercreek, OH. It is the electronic chain’s first store in the Dayton market and the company plans to open another near the Dayton Mall. The company operates 36 units in OH, TN, IN and KY.

 

Kohl’s Department Stores (262-703-7000) opened 87,000 sq.ft. stores at the Centrum Shopping Center in Cary, NC and at the Falls Pointe Shopping Center in North Raleigh, NC. The stores mark the entry into the Triangle market adding it to Atlanta, Charlotte and Greensboro as markets in the southeast that Kohl’s has opened. The company plans at least two more stores in the Raleigh/Durham market.

 

Uno Restaurant Corporation (617-323-9200) trading as Pizzaria Uno-Chicago Bar & Grill expects to open seven company-owned stores and 11 franchised locations in fiscal 2001. The company opened three company owned stores and two franchises in the first quarter of fiscal 2001. The chain operates 180 units in 30 states.

 

CEC Entertainment, Inc. (972-258-8507) trading as Chuck E. Cheese’s plans to open 38 to 40 locations in 2001. The 384-unit chain also plans renovations to over 100 units this year.
