Closings & Financial Woes Super Discount Markets Inc. (770-732-6800) trading as Cub Foods plans to close all 19 of its’ stores in GA by year’s end. Seventeen of the stores are in the Atlanta metro area and two are in Columbus. The discount food company operates more than 130 units nationwide. The closures are a part of a plan to exit non-core markets. Roadhouse Grill (954-957-2600) closed five NC and SC locations. The company operates 79 full-service restaurants in FL NC SC AL AR GA LA MS NY OH and TN. Quality Stores Inc. (616-798-8787) trading as Quality Farm & Fleet closed 133 locations 47 in NE and 11 in SD alone while a group of investors filed an involuntary bankruptcy petition against the company. The closings will not impact the chain’s 40 locations in MI. The company will continue to operate its 178 units east of the Mississippi River. Brewster & Stroud (440-543-1861) is closing its Westlake OH location and will continue to operate its stores in Chagrin Falls OH and Fairlawn OH. Wal*Mart (800-925-6278) plans to close 42 locations due to the opening of larger units in the same market. The units are scattered throughout 13 states and occupy a total of 2.2 million sq.ft. The discount chain operates 1 651 stores 1 026 supercenters and 25 Neighborhood Markets. Phoenix Restaurant Group (800-733-6697) trading as Denny’s closed locations in Sioux Falls SD and Enid OK citing the company’s declining financial condition. Denny’s closed 25 locations nationwide in recent months.Friendly Ice Cream Corp. (413-543-2400) once operated about 550 restaurants in the Northeast and mid-Atlantic but has recently shut down 80 units with plans to close another 70 locations.Samuels Jewelers (512-369-1400) plans to close 39 poorly performing stores to make up for $46 million in losses the company endured in the most recent fiscal year. The closings will leave the company with 125 stores in 23 states by the new year down from 198 in June 2000. Most of Samuels Jewelers locations are in TX AZ CA CO and KY. |
